If you're an undergrad Adam then you really don't need to stress all that much. To say that undergrad history courses are a joke is an understatement. They don't go into detail on anything, just a general overview of major events and personalities. We spent maybe three hours on the entirety of the Roman era, for example, all the way from the beginning of the Republic to the end of the Empire. We never even went over the Muslim-Sassanid conflicts either, just a general overview of Muhammad's beginnings and his eventual conquest of the Arabian peninsula.

Can't help playing an armchair general and wonder why so many generals fell for the same tactic of feint retreat and ambush. Reconnaissance is probably an underrated aspect of war.

Many reasons often different from one instance to the next. Overall though advanced battlefield maneouvers are very difficult and require a well disciplined core of veteran soldiers. We talk about the times it worked because it leads to these stunning victories that reshape history but we don't talk about the thousands of times it failed. A feigned retreat can very quickly turn into a real retreat and looks like one from an observers perspective so many attempts never even get recognized as what they were. Also the general knowledge of tactics and strategy that we enjoy simply didn't exist back then, they relied mostly on the experience of veterans to teach young leaders and the efficacy of this varies wildly. Lastly as you pointed out Reconnaissance was generally underrated. Rome was famously bad at scouting for several centuries as their noble born cavalry felt that scouting missions were beneath their status.
@wintersking42903 жыл бұрын
Remember messages and scouting reports had to brought manually back to the commanders and by the time they arrived there was a good chance the enemy had moved again. Communications weren't always anywhere near as fast as they are now.
@ashutoshkukreti67063 жыл бұрын
A feigned retreat proposes a wager to enemy. Put yourself in the shoes of the Persians,they were getting grinded for like ages by the Caliphate. They were on defensive and destabilised. They needed something to turn the tables, something like a decisive victory. See how hard it would to leave alone enemy unscathed which could have been destroyed? Even if you consider the risks of a Feigned retreat,the temptation of the possibility of great victory can overwhelm you .It has happened many times in history a Victory fell short of being decisive because of caution. These are the moments which differentiate a good General from a Great one.

You refer to Ali as Muhammad's son in law, but don't mention that Uthman himself was also Muhammad's son in law, twice over. He married two of Muhammad's daughters but they are less famous than Fatimah. Apparently Sunnis and Shi'ites disagree on whether Muhammad's other daughters were biologically his, or from Khadija's previous marriage. This may be why Ali is presented as "the son in law" despite not being the only one to hold that distinction.

Umar is a very logical man. Albeit his decisions were sometimes controversial (e.g. Khalid recalled from military duty), it's always based on logic that unstopable military machine like him might have gained fanatic supporters unintentionally (khalid wasn't known as political man unlike Mu'awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan) if let loose for too long despite his contributions for Islam. That decision also opening up for another officers to shine. Truly, Islamic government was at its peak military and administration under Umar ibn Khatthab Radiyallahu 'Anhu.

Akhi we love Khalid radiAllahu3anhu but Khalid was only removed not because of hatred or envy as some western orientalist try to portray umar RA but it was because umar wanted to stop the rumors of Muslims wining battle after battle because of Khalid…when victory is only from Allah, but Khalid was just a means Allah used to grant victory to Islam and the muslims( rAnhum ajma3een) that’s the reason why its mentioned in our books of Hadith/fiqh- seerahtul sahaba and kutub Al jihad from mass transmitters. Western academia try’s to portray some sahaba especially umar as bad because a lot of Shia are in those institutions…They have this deep hatred that the blessed companions spread Islam and therefore deviated from the teachings of prophet Muhammad Alayhisalatuwasalam which is complete BS. Sir Muhammad Iqbal wrote: "If you ask me what is the most important event in the history of Islam, I shall say without any hesitation: “The Conquest of Persia.” The battle of Nehawand gave the Arabs not only a beautiful country, but also an ancient civilization; or, more properly, a people who could make a new civilisation with the Semitic and Aryan material. Our Muslim civilisation is a product of the cross-fertilization of the Semitic and the Aryan ideas. It is a child who inherits the softness and refinement of his Aryan mother, and the sterling character of his Semitic father. But for the conquest of Persia, the civilisation of Islam would have been one-sided. The conquest of Persia gave us what the conquest of Greece gave to the Romans."

Absolutely incredible that the Persians were taken down in this manner. A 20 year war with the eastern Romans and a civil war literally right before the Muslims arrived put the Sassanids at an all-time low and constituted right place, right time for the Muslims for sure. But still, they were taking on the two superpowers of the western world at the same time and won both. Crazy. After this battle, the last Persian Shah roamed around from region to region trying to drum up support but was turned down at every point. Irán had devolved into a territory of warlords governing small kingdoms in Kazakhstan, Persia, and Central Asia. The Muslims would pick them off one by one. Yazdegerd eventually fled northeast into Turkic land and further to China. He was killed in Central Asia by a miller, in an armed robbery. So ended the great Persian Sassanid Empire.

It's like saying Madagascar defeated the USA after its war in Vietnam, no friend that's not an excuse at all. Persia had all the better and more resources, technologies, experience etc..., and almost in all the Arab vs Persia battles the Persian army had the higher numbers of army, better weaponry and even the defensive positions which is an advantage by itself, despite the better and shorter supply lines. Saying Persia was in war, civil war, and plague, all of these events occured on Arabs simultaneously, and in a more deadly percentage, due to the worse and more primitve health system than the one was in Persia or the SPQR, one of the stories that a full muslim army died out of the plague, and the civil war of Ridah killed most of the prophet companions, the civil war in persia was nothing comparing to Ridah wars.

The 2nd half of it involving the trap could not have been possible without the 1st two failed human waves which made the Persians actually fall for the trap, and unable to consider the possibility Muslims could flip the table around (which they ended up doing). Even on the brink of losing and the odds against em, the Muslims still managed to turn it around at the last second for a decisive victory. Sassanid? First time I read that name outside of an actual paper book. It's very nice to see a channel that brushes more obscure subjects. These things also shaped world history. In fact, the Sassanian and the Parthian before them had an incredible influence on European (and central Asian history) influencing mounted warfare in what would both become the knightly kingdoms and the steppe people. (notwhistanding their cultural influence, such as a story of a round table with noble warriors led by a lord holding a magical sword, among many other tales...)

Antiquity and the middle age armies when someone does something very predictable: Wow! That is the most destructive maneuver ever! 2 weeks later in an other battle the same things happen: Wow! Who could have predicted that!
@abdiabdi32253 жыл бұрын
yeah but you have to realize the communication was abysmal so to hope for any smart maneuver is wildly overestimating the capabilities of the time especially when creating smaller armies out of a big army was only made by Napolean which is well over 1000 years after this which shows you how the complexity of modern warfare which was so deadly it had to in a city to avoid the enemy just destroying you and everything around you. Just look at Hannibal his attack were so bloody simple it would shock you that he was able to win anything but it just goes to show how war has changed.

Go ask your general's of today how many tactics they took from Muslim generals of 1400 years ago. They are still learning from them today. Sitting back behind a computer is easier to talk. But I am sure that if you were in those situations where you had to face a 40.000 large army waiting for you in forts, behind obstacles, in the middle of a hot desert with sand blowing in your eyes, with minimum resources to live from, you would make it in the history books of the greatest failures of all time. Those generals at that time were masterminds. They not only needed to be physically powerful, but they were mentally strong as steel too. And they also had high IQ's to come up with superior tactics that changed the coarse of history by the will of Allah. Now-a-days you click on a button behind a screen from 3000 miles away and the job gets done by computers and machines. Let's talk about predictability of things.
@gertrudasozinkas49503 жыл бұрын
@@maghribi5371 all these things come into play if the tactic wasn't used even once against your army. If you know what happened to another Persian general who wasn't dumb but still failed, you know that the tactic will probably be used against you. So why don't you just send scouts to possible Arab hiding places? Even if you lived 1500 years back wouldn't you check?
@gertrudasozinkas49503 жыл бұрын
@@abdiabdi3225 completely understand that but then you're fighting Hannibal, you know that he's a great commander and you aren't dumb so just scout ahead.
@maghribi53713 жыл бұрын
@@gertrudasozinkas4950 The fact that the Persians fell in this trap proves how genuine the tactic and scenario created by the Muslims during that battle was. You can't judge until you are in an exact situation suffering an equal stress and fear of loss. You know emotions play a key role in how someone decides right? After weeks of waiting for a chance to be victorious, plus the circumstances during which you are clashing with your enemies with death looking you in the eyes, you don't have the time to sit back and ponder on all previous mistakes, especially when they didn't occur many times. The thing is they didn't expect the Muslims to come with such a tactic especially when the Persians were sure of their manpower and tactic. It's the same as how an ambush works. You march with your warriors into a valley and suddenly get surrounded and attacked from all hidden sides. But, there are tactics to prevent such situations though. For example, the battle of Uhud, in which the Messenger of Allah Salallahu 'Alaihi Wassallam ordered a few archers to stand on a hill to prevent the enemy to go around the mountain and attack from the back. He Salallahu 'Alaihi Wassallam ordered them to not come down even if birds are picking on their dead bodies. But after the enemy retreaded some of the archers came down to collect the spoils of war. So Khalid Ibn Al Walid (Radyallahu' Anh) who at that time wasn't a Muslim yet, he saw this happening and ordered his cavalry to go around the hill and attack the Muslims from the back. So this is a genuine deffence tactic that can prevent attacks from the back if followed correctly.

The 1st generation of Muslims were just smarter, hence how they conquer so quickly so fast. Most of their victories were decisive that also has profound and long lasting psychological effects on their opponents. Imagine losing to people who you not only outnumber and are technologically/economically superior to. It makes you think God is genuinely on their side, and it's impossible for a mortal like you to win against that. Hence why many of them just joined Islam to be on the winning side. (and the fact that Byzantine/Sassanid leaders were incompetent's added to that)
