Full name Robert James Fischer
Country United States
Iceland (2005-2008)
Born March 9, 1943
Chicago, Illinois, US
Died January 17, 2008 (aged 64)
Reykjavík, Iceland
Title Grandmaster (1958)
World Champion 1972-1975
Peak rating 2785 (July 1972 FIDE rating list)[1]
Robert James Fischer (March 9, 1943 - January 17, 2008) was an American chess grandmaster and the eleventh World Chess Champion. Many consider him to be the greatest chess player of all time.[2][3]
Fischer showed great skill in chess from an early age; at 13, he won a brilliancy known as "The Game of the Century". At age 14, he became the US Chess Champion, and at 15, he became both the youngest grandmaster up to that time and the youngest candidate for the World Championship. At age 20, Fischer won the 1963-64 US Championship with 11 wins in 11 games, the only perfect score in the history of the tournament. His book My 60 Memorable Games, published in 1969, is regarded as a classic work of chess literature.
Fischer won the World Chess Championship in 1972, defeating Boris Spassky of the USSR, in a match held in Reykjavík, Iceland. Publicized as a Cold War confrontation between the US and USSR, it attracted more worldwide interest than any chess championship before or since. In 1975, Fischer refused to defend his title when an agreement could not be reached with FIDE, chess's international governing body, over one of the conditions for the match. Under FIDE rules, this resulted in Soviet GM Anatoly Karpov, who had won the qualifying Candidates' cycle, being named the new world champion by default.
Fischer made numerous lasting contributions to chess. In the 1990s, he patented a modified chess timing system that added a time increment after each move, now a standard practice in top tournament and match play. He also invented Fischerandom, a new variant of chess known today as "Chess960".
Early years
Bobby Fischer was born at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, on March 9, 1943.[4] His birth certificate listed his father as Hans-Gerhardt Fischer, also known as Gerardo Liebscher,[5] a German biophysicist. His mother, Regina Wender Fischer, was a US citizen,[6][7] born in Switzerland; her parents were Polish Jews.[8][9] Raised in St. Louis, Missouri,[4] Regina became a teacher, registered nurse, and later a physician.[10]
After graduating from college in her teens, Regina traveled to Germany to visit her brother. It was there she met geneticist and future Nobel Prize winner Hermann Joseph Muller, who persuaded her to move to Moscow to study medicine. She enrolled at I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University, where she met ...

Yes, Pal Banko was not an average player at all, he was a strong GM from mid-fifties till mid-seventies,reaching his peak in December 1958 (ELO 2658).The game mentioned comes from the USA Championships (1963/64);Benko lose the game in just twenty-one move, so we have to acknowledge it was really a very quickly finished game, especially for such a strong player.

I like the video .. but to make it clear when showing the next game is to label Bobby Fisher playing side .. it's taking a few seconds to here you confirm which side he's playing from . Just saying it would be nice to read it and now instantaneously

Rf6 in the last sequence is a move that a B player like myself wouldn't find or even consider. Everything is obvious once it's pointed out in analysis, but over the board? Never find those.

In the second example, at 4:16, if black RxQ at f1, then RxR on f1, with discovered check from the Bishop. (position 4:19 in the video,) , now the black Q can simply take the B on d5, so no more check, and white cannot take the Q because RxR at f1, with mate. So the Q is immune from capture until possibly white RxR on f8 and black KxR on f8. Only then white can take the Q., White still has a won game.
@ryanpaszek2067

@John Dean Rxf1 Qxd5 Rxf8+ Kxf8 exd5 and the white rook is hitting the knight, up a pawn and the exchange. White is completely won and since Rxf8+ is so obvious, I don't see any need for saying the queen is immune from recapture because it isn't.

The speaker isn't a good speaker. His commentary is good, but, his voice isn't good for public speaking.

It's fine. There are 2 components of spoken communication, the speaker and the listener. The speaker is English and is speaking native English. I am an English speaking Australian and found his speech very clear and easy to listen to. Is this a case of another frivolous KZbin complaint? Would you prefer he didn't post because you didn't like the sound of his voice?
