Glad you took the time to build a mock up of that diagonal support. Most people just try to explain it and it can be tough for non-mechanical people to wrap their heads around. But I see so many put in wrong, even by fence companies.

Wow what a great looking gate. Thank you for the mock up demonstration gate. That really explains how the brace works. You would be a terrific teacher for young people in how to do carpentry. I so much appreciate the detail put into your builds. I enjoy seeing a little extra time put into what might seem like overkill to ensure that it’s done right the first time, for a long time. Great gate and lock and great detailed explanations of what and why you do things. I love the double key deadbolt and will be looking into ordering one for my gate. I have put the middle or opposing hinge pin upside down to prevent the gate from being lifted off it's hinges and gaining entry. I know it is heavy but very short pins holding the hinges in place would make it easily wedged up and off the pins.

looks fantastic. With all the expense and grandeur of the gate, I would sand it to 120 and weather seal it. It is just esthetics for me but I hate pocket screws so I would do dowels or dominoes instead of any screws. Great gate you have there. and thanks for the bracing demonstration. Urethane glue would also do well instead of the epoxy.

Really picked up some different and wonderful things one was your patience first of your videos I've ever seen and I subscribed. Although I do have three questions/criticisms but with your patience and understanding should ne no problem. 1st I understand that 2×4's twist and warp but they make adjustable metal rods with threaded ends to torque and twist tha gate back in shape with a few turns of a wrench. 2nd and it ties in with the 1st one the reason people use 2×4s on gates is weight all Gates will twist, sag and just plain fall down if not constructed correctly in not having adjustments bars and proper wheel. I love you work on the 4×4's but there is no way even with heavier hardware those beefy 4×4s are not going to sag at least you used a proper wheel it's just simple gravity the heavier the item your trying to suspend the harder it is on everything ×100 if your gate is now three times heavier its eventually going to lean towards EARTH. Again loved the video but I stil think heavier hardware proper adjustable gates better wheels was the way to go, not heavier.. Any way on a lighter note # 3 I saw a curtain climber in the background for a second hope you teach the the next generation to know the difference in a Phillips head screw driver and a regular . Or a socket from a ratchet these kids need to learn how to use their hands seen way to many 40-50 year old professional students these days someone will have to know how to do physical work and not be afraid to get dirty. Keep em outside and away from. The computer it's rotting thier brain just like mine tonight or rather this morning if you can't tell by now by how far down the rabbit hole I just fell have a good one can't wait to watch more of your work.

Hi James. I enjoyed watching your video very much. Love how you and your family work as a team. Can I make 2 suggestions? The first one is to only use stainless screws. The deck screws, pocket screws and galvanized ring shank nails will all eventually bleed out on your beautiful gate. (I've worked with wood and outdoor projects for over 52 years) The second suggestion is that you have the most beautiful part of the gate facing the inside. (Imho) I thought it would be better with all the diagonal detail facing out, or better yet (and a lot more work) both! Your beautiful work would have made for an outstanding curb appeal and showcased your talent. Thank you for the detailed video. As always, I enjoy your projects.

The pocket screws are a good addition; I would have put them on the inside such that they wouldn’t be seen and would gain some protection from water ingress. I’d also suggest Kreg HD pocket holes and screws as they’re, I believe 50% stronger than standard Kreg pocket screws, they are much beefier and all rated for exterior and pressure treated lumber, they’re also brown. While I like epoxy for a lot I usually don’t use it in glueing wood; I usually stick to PVA glues like Titebond 3 for exterior work, and Polyurethane glues with them swimming to hold up well long term. Short term and jig making I do like epoxies and CA glues.

The reason the brace worked on the mock-up is because the brace is a solid piece of wood that cant compress under the weight of the gate. But that angle only works if you are using something that stays rigid. If you were using a turnbuckle cable as a brace (as some gates do) this would not work in the same angle because cables are not rigid or stiff like wood and will bow when compressed. You would have to use the opposite corners which would now utilize tension rather than compression to eliminate the sagging. But the mock up was still very educational because I didn't even realize this myself until is seen your demonstration.

Now that's a massive gate! Very nice build and tutorial sir. However, since I personally tend to be a bit paranoid about security, I would have added 2 more sturdy bolts. One above and one below the main lock. And I would find a way to add some spikes to the top of both the gate and the gate posts as a painful deterrent to any one attempting to climb or jump over.
