Build a large Custom Wood Gate That Will Not Sag! No cables or wheels needed!
In this video you will learn how to build a gate that will NOT sag. This procedure can be used for building sag free gates for fencing, doors for sheds and barns or wood windows for sheds and barns. If you follow this technique for virtually any hinged gate, door or window you will enjoy decades of sag free service. You will not need to support this gate design with a wheel or cable.
I built two 9' gates for this project and four Crossbuck windows for my barn and fence.

I've used youtube many times for self help stuff. This is the video I needed and the best self help yet. I am going to build my gate exactly as per this, minus the wire. Thank you sir - and the music soundtrack was pretty good too, bit of The King and Neil Diamond, good job. I have liked and subscribed. There will now be a gate in Australia made to your design.

Great video but if you are doing this for the first time remember that the hinge post can and will bend. Make sure you are using a 6x6 not 4x4 and its buried beneath the frost line. Very important..

That is amazing work. As to add extra strength to make them stronger as you suggested - where in the middle should add the board, if don't mind me asking? Your response would be greatly appreciated.
@helpinguonline
@helpinguonline 2 жыл бұрын
This gate is still as strong as the day I built it. It doesn't need more support but if you liked a different look you could add a vertical board in the middle and that would also add support... or another horizontal board in the middle would do the same.

I did not do a detailed video on the barn / shed building. I do have a number of pictures and some video. I will look at what I have and may do a video on the entire project?.

Beautiful job! I’m considering a similar build and worried about sag and the hinges. Can you provide the link to the hinges you used again? Thanks.

I wanted to save money & get a hinge that would support the load of these heavy gates. I found these 8" galvanized T hinges at Harbor Freight for around $3 each. www.harborfreight.com I painted them black and they are still working great after 3 years with not any sagging at all. I use them every day to let the animals out. I will have a video out on December 7, 2021 showing how I painted those hinges to not peal or flake. They are also in great condition... like the day I painted them outside of being a bit dusty and dirty.

What a great tutorial! Are the deck boards you used 6" (5/4" x 6")? Thanks!

Yes standard 5/4” x 6” treated deck boards… Used… And they actually measure 1” x 5 1/2”

Nicely done. Is the wire mesh part of the gate's structural integrity, or is that simply to impede animals?
@helpinguonline
@helpinguonline 2 жыл бұрын
The wire mesh may add a little structural integrity but not necessary. I only did it for animal security.

I have a question about the gate. I built one using your tips and no the gate has twisted a bit. I’ve put some tension wires on it to try and straighten it out. Didn’t work all that well. Do you have any tips on how to straighten it better ?

Did you use "wet" treated boards from a HD or Lowes to build your gate?... Sometimes their boards are a lesser quality and if not KDAT (kiln dried after treatment) they will do a lot of crazy things as they dry. As I stated in my video I built my gates with used deck boards (the wood was dry) and they have not moved even a 1/4 inch in the last 2+ years. What I would do... If this is the reason for your twisting boards... I would keep the gate latched (top and bottom) at all time while the wood dries. Also make sure to get it sealed (stained)

Good work. But I’m Surprised at how small those hinges are to hold up a large gate like that.

I have been very pleased with these hinges. They were very inexpensive and to date (almost 3 years) they are still working like new.

If vertical boards are used? Will the added weight be a concern?
@helpinguonline
@helpinguonline 2 жыл бұрын
A gate built like that would not budge but make sure you have hinges to carry the weight depending upon how long you make The gate

What size T hinges did you use? 6,8,10?
@helpinguonline
@helpinguonline 2 жыл бұрын
8 inch that I bought at Harbor freight. I did this project about three years ago and at that time the hinges were a little over three dollars apiece. Everything still holding up perfect! There is a link at the end of the video that you watched that show installing the hinges and explaining the process.

I am not sure what you mean?... but these gates (and windows) I built about a year ago have not budged even a fraction of an inch when closed, opened or anywhere in between. They are rock solid! Thanks for following.
