This is one of the O.G Landsknecht sidearms. Very cool.

I just held on of these at the Las Vegas Renfaire. It is amazingly well balanced. So much so that it feels lighter holding it ready for a fight, than it does holding it with the blade down. My girlfriend's son got one as a birthday present, and I am seriously jealous. I'll be ordering one soon.

A bit on the long end for a katzbalger, and the guard is also a tad large, but very nice overall. It isn't unfaithful to the historical blades, merely on the larger end of the spectrum for those. A very nice blade of a type that's all too rare.

Some Katzbalger swords have ends that look more rounded. This replica looks more like the cut n' thrust version w/ the sharp end.

You could hurt someone with that pommel.

I'll say. A good tap on the mouth with that pommel could send your opponent to the dentist for dentures.

It's a big guard, doesn't get in the way or rub on your hand when using it.

I just held one over the weekend it balances it amazingly well. Trust me it is exactly the size it should be. If you have smaller hands it might feel a bit big, but for me it was perfect.

Why was the cross guard shaped like that? 8
@thif47224 жыл бұрын
I'm no expert on the topic but I'd say an S shape provides the largest defensive surface per mass. If it were a full circle like on katanas such a big handguard would weigh a ton. If it were a normal cross guard it wouldn't cover the sides of the hands as well (if I remember correctly katzbalgers were used to combat great swords and pikes so a lot of protection was important) I also think an empty circle with a single or two lines in between would be a lot more fragile.

I usually see ring ornamented or S shaped guards like that on swords and weapons that come from Germany or the Renaissance period. Probably just a regional thing for those krauts.

I hate the grip and pommel, but with gloves on, it's okay.
