The London Tube has used many voices over the years for their “Mind the Gap” announcements but no story is quite as intriguing as that of a voice actor and the widow he left behind. When the London Underground moved to a digital announcement system, the original analog recordings were replaced and the woman thought her husband’s voice was lost forever. Thankfully, Transport for London was able to reinstate the husband’s voice at a single Tube station so it would live on for the world to hear.

I believe this is based on a true story but with differences. The lady that came to listen to her late husband's voice saying "mind the gap" went to Embankment station, it wasn't the first thing she heard him say though. A few innacuracies: Theydon Bois on the Central Line is out towards Epping, long after the tube goes above ground. The lady didn't have an American accent. While there are sometimes platform staff, you usually wouldn't get station masters as shown in the video. The "mind the gap" replacement voice is not anything like the one that replaced the husband's voice. National Express in the UK is a coach company. While they did run some train franchises, they didn't add it to the livery and the tube trains are run by Transport for London formerly London Transport. The man was an actor rather than singer. What was correct is that she was given recordings of his voice, but I believe they were audio recordings (I saw her listen to them on a sound system), not a memory stick as shown. Which kind of defeats the whole advert.

It's artistic license I guess. I'm not sure if it was done in a real station. They probably weren't allowed to get hold of a real LU uniform for the guy playing the station assistant to wear.

What a great idea-except for the distractingly self-taught singer without the slightest clue how to use his voice! After centuries of musical progress, why do so many singers think they must reinvent the wheel and sing any which way? And how did our standards sink so low that we must bear listening to these people strain and wheeze their way through music that might otherwise be beautiful? I'm not saying he has to be Luciano Pavrotti. But come on. And BTW, the original "Mind the Gap" voice wasn't that of some wandering American would-be singer... It was that of British actor Oswald Laurence (imdb.com/name/nm0491143/bio). So Kingston has also rather blatantly rewritten English history.
