This is BY FAR the best drill that Destry Balch has written so far for as long as he's been at Kingwood!

I was in that performance and we dominated marching scores but got ripped on musical scores. Oh well, we had a blast!

I hadn't even heard of youtube in 2007, so I'm surprised so many people were already on here posting and commenting on videos.

Sousa marches do work beautifully on the field! That's one of the reasons why they were written! South Park HS (Beaumont TX) under Matt Brackin (1977-1984?) - played one or two Sousa marches at UIL marching contest. Sousa marches - if not chosen by many band directors - is because their ranges tend to be extended, harder for younger kids to tune well, and play considering endurance!

I wouldn't be suprised if King wrote it. I feel like almost every song we played in band was by King, lol.

I'm just letting you know, the "performance" at the Sugar Bowl is going to be a ton of high school bands all on the field at the same time playing the same tune. It's not nationally televised. The Rose Bowl, on the other hand, is one of the most selective events in the nation for bands (the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in NYC being the other), and is one of the premiere television events of the bowl season. I just want to make sure you know exactly what you're talking about.

Right, the halftime performance is not nationally televised. Believe me. I was there in 2004. The Rose Bowl parade is nationally televised.

Well, KM4B has 1st divisions in every year of existence, except for 1979 (year 1), when it was forced to compete as a 5A school despite having only freshman and sophomores. You can't fault them for being founded 40+ years after Longview.

Hey, let's cut the rivalry crap and focus on what's really important. Kingwood was much better when I was there. End of discussion. ;-)

@2tobytwo I'm going to have to disagree with you. Sousa marches don't translate well to the marching field and IMHO, most of Sousa's marches aren't as strong as a King or Duble march. The marches that Kingwood played in this drill are some of the most well written. A lot of bands in Texas play them because they are so technically demanding on all sections of the band. They are great learning tools. And if the outstrain of Atty. General doesn't get you excited, there's something wrong with you.

alan, No that was in the 70's. I believe Pete Kunkel was still there then. It's nice to see bands that still play this style. If ANYONE would ever try to do it, they'd realize how extremely difficult it is, compared to the stupid drum and bugle corps crap!

Longview is a good ensemble, very good even. But post-Kunkel I just don't see that same edge...the snap, polish, swagger, and intensity that they had when he was director. Longview H.S. isn't even the best military-style band in Longview any more. That distinction now belongs to Spring Hill H.S. which has qualified for and competed at the UIL state marching contest three or four times in a row. In 2016 they placed 5th making them the highest ranked military-style band in the state in conference 4A.

I just want to say that Kingwood has an amazing marching band. And there was another 5A band at NAMMB, Longview. I was in that band and we hosted NAMMB that year so we didnt compete. We would have owned yall anyways.
@ibleedorange200717 жыл бұрын
OK, I do not mean to degrade Kingwood's great band. Longview does boast 57 1st divisions at region marching. I do believe we're the only band that can say that. Not even "the big, bad KM4B." I'm guessing there are dead counts and a cadence in Battle of the Winds b/c your low brass couldn't cut the 2nd strain and "actual" trio. Longview could though 2 years ago. But I digress, our bands are the top 2 in the state in my book. I wish ours bands would compete more like in years past.

"old style" with lots of counter marches..not easy! I like the newer "corp style" myself.
