Anwar faces brickbats for ‘bullying’ student in a Q&A session

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has found himself in hot water again for his behaviour towards a teenage student, with netizens labeling him as a “bully”.
Malaysians have expressed their dissatisfaction on social media with Anwar’s response to a teenager who asked whether the government planned to do away with the Bumiputera quota system.
During a dialogue session at Kolej Matrikulasi Pulau Pinang in Kepala Batas yesterday, the student requested that she be given time to explain some context before posing her question.
However, Anwar cut her off before she could explain, saying he already understood the question, and had already answered a similar question. Anwar also said the student should have refrained from discussing the quota system and instead should have pointed out specific cases of non-Malays being denied entry, allowing the government to address the situation.

Nuh. There can never be a perfect world and the more u try to intervene the worse it will be. Do u know that the Malays in Singapore income difference with Chinese Singaporeans are a lot less than the Malays vs Chinese Malaysians? If that is the case why should we still continue with the NEP policy? In the US they have this affirmative action policies where they put quotas for Black people at universities, civil servants, etc. When u look at the income difference between White Americans vs Black Americans and u compare that with White vs Black Canadians or Europeans. The income gap is bigger in the US. Moral of the story is, quota doesn't help anybody. It makes u complacent. Plus, what kind of values are u teaching your kids? You are telling them that you all are born as a loser therefore no need to work hard compared to other races. If u get 1-2 A's is good already u can go to the university because the government has already set quotas for u. If this is the message we are telling our kids then there is something wrong with us. Don't see yourself as a loser and u need the quota system to survive. See yourself as a winner and you don't need handouts. Teach them this value first.

Yes help all, by helping based on 'needs' not 'bumi' status. I agree with reserving places for underprivileged. Because amongst bumi there are rich and there are poor. So why not reserve places for best performing B40 students? Example, if there are 100 matriculation spots - 60% can be pure meritocracy (Regardless poor rich what race). The other 40% reserved for underpriviledge B40 (best performers amongst the B40 group, they do not need to fight results with the more privileged students whom as Anwar puts it has the best education support). Isn't this a fairer system?

As a Malaysian Chinese i had and is still very supportive of Anwar. He is one Malaysian leader who dares to tread where others dare not and speak out when others prefer to remain dumb. He is open and clean, and has gone through the test of fire (10 years jail + a black eye + sleeping on hard cold concrete bed) where not another Malaysian leader had gone through. When i was working for the largest bumi contractor in our country back in the 1980s, my boss told me Anwar (then the DPM) is incorruptible. My boss knew best as he was then the Penang State Umno treasurer. Yes, i would agree that Anwar needed to be a bit more tactful and patient with the student, but again this sort of question, i am sure, must had been put to him countless times, and he must had been tired of answering the question. To be fair and given the reality of the matter (quota system in our institutions of higher learning) being set for decades by BN and the later ruling coalitions, we cannot and must not expect Anwar to make any drastic changes now or in the immediate future. A slip on this matter would be disastrous and tantamount to political suicide for Anwar and the Unity Government. Let's all be patient and realistic, and allow Anwar and his team a reasonable time to set Malaysia back on the right track before we demand for them to speed the badly long overdue changes that WE ALL deserve!

Sekolah sgt uzur, dengan perjalanan yg mencabar untuk SMP ke sekolah dlm 5 jam perjalanan dari sibu, 3 jam perjalanan Dr kapit, belum lagi yg masuk jalan balak jalan mmng teruk atau naik sampan dgn perjalanan yg agak lama, dgn kemudahan kurang untuk pergi ke sekolah tersebut. Bila dh mengajar ada je anak2 kaum iban yang pandai tapi tak berpeluang untuk lanjut pelajaran dan sukan sbb tak mampu dan fakir Dr segi ekonomi keluarga, sebab kerajaan wat kuota cm ni baru mereka berpeluang nk masuk u atau masuk maktab perguruan.

It is very easy to understand what the PMX said. Quota must be in place otherwise the Bumiputera who is the majority in this country will not support the government. If the Bumiputera don't support the government and vote for the PN who are mostly the Malays, and PN rule the country the rights of non bumiputera will totally abolished. The non bumiputera will suffer more. We must balance between the social contract that we have agreed long time ago when we accept Indian and Chinese to get nationality of Malaysia. No countries in this world in which the majority race in that country will give their right to others. That's the fact.

Instead of harping on Malay special privileges and social contracts, the NEW government can increase allocation to expand and enhance infrastructure for matriculation courses. Secondly, maintain the current quota intake at existing universities, but we can establish at least two totally new universities where the intake will be based on meritocracy. Since the first sesi dialog months ago until today, students are urged to go straight to the question. So apparently this lady is questioning about abolishing bumiputera rights. That question alone shows her ignorance to the whole contemporary situation of national political climate. It also shows that she didn't watched the previous sessions done elsewhere just because it's not her homework. But Anwar didn't reject her the moment she dropped that bombshell. He asked her to go straight to her real question because he didn't expect the same question. Then she resume by 'saya mahu memberi justifikasi kpd...' As you can see, clearly she already asked the intended question which she should kept it short without any long-winded story. So many similar question about this topic weeks back from previous temu bual or sesi dialog and still we are stuck with this topic. Anwar urged the rakyat to follow his Q&A tour from media platforms as he emphasized "I understand.... Kalau you follow temu Anwar, ada yg tanya soalan tu saya (sudah) jawab. Lain kali follow this... " It's impossible to provide a realistic answer to your question isn't it. One year? Two year? Unfortunately he was always referred with such immature feedback similar to like asking bila harga nak turun when the explanation has been provided countless times... In fact, the young lady should hold her head up high for this rare opportunity. She would know there's nothing to be ashamed of. Hopefully she would mature up from this experience. I understand her frustration. I understand his frustration too. She felt it's unfair. He on the other hand his hands are quite tied too because like he said very clearly and frankly, if he were to demolish the quota system the Malays will vote the opposition bersatu and pas and we're back to square one. I think the students who were present today have certainly been blessed to hear it in person. I am grateful to be alive in a time where I can witness such a great person leading our country.

Problem with quota policy is that it is not based on income levels of families regardless of race. Rich malay students getting government scholarships to study overseas but poor outstanding Chinese and Indian students can't get access to government funds. Same with housing. Quota policy should be based on income levels, not race.

I managed to educate my 3 children (2 Engineers and 1 Doctor) by my own funds and savings. I am way past the official retirement age but I am still employed and will continue to work. I just think differently. I do my bit by contributing to my Alumni (local U) for needy students, tycoons we are not but collectively we finance several graduates every year. It's about using our intelligence and resources smartly.

In the beginning The student was brave yet nervous her first time encountered direct communicating with the Prime Minister. Unfortunately PM gets annoyed the moment the student stuttered in panic and raised her voice then switched from Bahasa to English. PM sounded brutal and harsh, didnt get the student's to complete her question. Being discriminating mentioned certain ethnicity, Dayak school very low. PM was seen to be struggling to answer well however could have used a better and appropriate words to explain to the young audience about the sensitive issues of voting from the majority mass from certain community. Be more eloquent in addressing the issue instead highlighting classifying community by races instead make it more union and integrated. After listening towards middle of his reply, he was being thorough with wide perspective of evidences and advised the student to reword her statement and reword her questions more specifically to obtain better answer solutions from PM and MOE. In conclusion if you ask the right question you will get a right answer. Thank you for the video.

I’m a Malay, very fortunate to have a son obtained 10As in his SPM. Despite applying for scholarships and attempting to get accepted into IPTA. he was not successful, and as a result, he is now studying in IPTS. I understand that there might be various factors contributing to this situation. As a Muslim, I am deeply grateful for the providence given by God, understanding that He guides our paths, even though I have observed there are students from different races comparatively receiving better opportunities. Anwar said himself that meritocracy is a flawed conception if the playing field is not same for everyone. we should not simply resort to bumi/non bumi argument whenever one's fail to get a place into IPTA because eventually even the meritorious bumi also do not get the place.
