Just found this song today and it’s on repeat. That line, in particular, is a gut punch.

Profound song, catches one deep in the soul. Another masterpiece by John. I'd love to see what's going on in Lyle's mind as he listens to this masterpiece. Perhaps the same thing as a lot of us, being touched deeply.

One of the best songs he's ever done, and much better than the album version. Such a wonderful voice, great lyrics, and lovely guitar playing. And I love Lyle's little admiring smile.

Love his playing and songwriting, been listening to him since he first broke out in the vibrant music club scene in early-1980s Los Angeles as an 'angry young man' (anyone remember 'Cop Party'?), later 'escaping' California for Nashville. One thing I notice here is he plays the rhythem melody on the lower strings and complements it with notes on the higher strings, which is the opposite of most guitar playing.

" Eatin doughnuts and readin Twain ". Mr Hiatt has a way with lyrics that is magical. As Bonnie Raitt says John Hiatt is the only person who could rhyme amoeba with Queen of Sheba .

I’ve read that the “two cigarettes gone” line is a reference to his wife’s suicide; if true, that’s a nice little nod to her

@@petemaloney9783 the whole song is about the period after her death and his move from California to Nashville as a result of needing a fresh start. that line the most obvious reference though
