It was made by Fine Arts Films Inc. Some time between 1970 and 1973 for the Sonny and Cher show.

Now this is a REAL cartoon! Nice to hear a 3rd verse too, with a HAPPY ending! I almost thought it was Ray himself singing, old bud does such a good job with the vocals.

They need to have the happy ending on albums
@ridethelapras Жыл бұрын
@@prowolf633 Not to mention, "Now he's doing so much more, and he's wiser than before, and he's happy in his home and his position" is a very VERY 'classic' Kinks-ish line. A description of an optimistic outcome that would not be out of place on 'Face to Face' or 'Something Else'.

.... Around that time, 1983 - 1986 our family had relocated to Dallas Texas,..... (We were flat broke) but together, and happy..... And TV programming was much more vast in the big cities I recall viewing this on TV in Dallas Tejas.

I strongly suspect that CBS demanded the removal of the lyrics "Who thought that I would say 'Damn it all, and blow it all?'", plus the addition of a third verse with a happy ending ("And he made an unbelievable transition.") After all, on "The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour", it was sung by Sonny & Cher, and the show was watched by families! The animated music videos were given new soundtracks, and released on a VHS tape by John Wilson, in the 1980s.

the ending when he drives by all those alcohol ads gives me chills, it so perfectly conveys how it always haunts you even though it does get easier, and how our culture can make it worse. I have got flooded on YT & Hulu with alcohol ads & it really bothered me!

Here's a story about a sinner, He used to be a winner who enjoyed a life of prominence and position, But the pressures at the office and his socialite engagements, And his selfish wife's fanatical ambition, It turned him to the booze, And he got mixed up with a floosie And she led him to a life of indecision. The floosie made him spend his dole She left him lying on Skid Row A drunken lag in some Salvation Army Mission. It's such a shame. Oh demon alcohol, Sad memories I cannot recall, Who thought I would say, Damn it all and blow it all, Oh demon alcohol, Memories I cannot recall, Who thought I would fall a slave to demon alcohol. Sad memories I cannot recall, Who thought I would fall a slave to demon alcohol. Barley wine, pink gin, He'll drink anything, Port, pernod or tequila, Rum, scotch, vodka on the rocks, As long as all his troubles disappeared. But he messed up his life, went and beat up his wife, And the floosie's gone and found another sucker She's gonna turn him on to drink She's gonna lead him to the brink And when his money's gone, She'll leave him in the gutter, It's such a shame. Oh demon alcohol, Sad memories I cannot recall, Who thought I would say, Damn it all and blow it all, Sad memories I cannot recall, Who thought I would fall, A slave to demon alcohol.

This is a cover, as the credits make clear at the end of the video. I'm still trying to figure out where that added verse came from, and if Ray Davies wrote that verse. I can't find any info on it.

I think the lyric changes (including different boozes in verse 2) were for the U.S. market. I think all of these animated videos were made for TV shows, which were subject to the networks' censors, plus cultural norms. American audiences generally insist on happy endings. That's why the musical version of "Little Shop of Horrors" had a happy ending, instead of the ending in the original film and the Broadway musical. I suspect that the network or the producers of whichever show commissioned the video insisted on a happy ending for the song.
