The Kinks first RCA album Muswell Hillbillies is their underrated masterpiece.

It's my absolute favorite but its a close race against Village Green and Something Else.

@@Apocalypse4162 Great albums, all of them. Village Green sold precious few copies when released in late 1968 but has since become a classic and a favourite among both critics, fans and music lovers in general. Not the same with Something Else from 1967. One of their finest 60s albums with classics like Death Of A Clown and Afternoon Tea. It deserves the same reappraisal as Village Green. Muswell Hillbillies from 1971 was their first RCA album and is my all time favourite Kinks album. Lyrically tragicomical and musically diverse with elements of American country and blues. It was NOT what RCA was expecting as a first album. They wanted a hook laden commercial pop album. Instead they got a marvellous densely packed album of music hall type songs delivered with humor and pastiche. Such a great album and such a shame so few people have even bothered to check it out.

@@thomasmarthinussen8978 There might be a lot more fans than you think. They are just not all concentrated demographically, but spread, albeit thinly, throughout the world. Hang what critics say!
@thomasmarthinussen89782 жыл бұрын
@@comic4relief That may be. Just of selected few of MY record collecting friends are even aware of that album. As far as the average music fan is concerned, an album with no hits are probably not worth even hearing, let alone buying. It's strange how people's mind work. 20th Century Man was the single off Muswell Hillbillies and didn't exactly set the charts on fire but then again, The Kinks was a far weightier musical concern than to worry about scoring hit singles. Sure, Pye Records put their promotional capacities on singles and paid little mind to actual albums. Ray Davies always took such great care in making every Kinks album a cohesive whole. A master of commercial hit singles too but he's addressed his disappointment in Pye over and over again. Having said that, he's also thankful towards Pye Records and has even said Pye was probably the best record label to be a part of. A complex, convoluted relationship for sure and RCA naturally enough expected The Kinks debut studio album for them to be a nice collection of radio ready pop songs. What they got, was something far better. A masterpiece of Ray Davies tragicomical songs. Almost jug band, old fashioned Jazzy ragtime blues, yet with oh-so English lyrics. It's probably my favourite Kinks album. Lord, I've laughed and I've cried listening to a most marvellous album, often doing my laughing and crying simultaneously!

I've never seen The Kinks. I have seen Ray through the years. I thought he was awesome. He performed the hits of The Kinks. I have always hoped to see Dave and Ray on the same stage once again. I love The Kinks and have always thought they were one of the most underrated bands from the British invasion. They didn't want to be like everybody else.

@Jim McCracken Yes ! Of all their great songs, Tired of Waiting for You was their biggest hit in the US, reaching #6 on the Billboard chart. In 1982 they tied that spot with Come Dancing. As a fan, all their songs were number one to me
@abelincoln56984 жыл бұрын
@Jim McCracken they got into a situation in the states just as their records were hitting and were unable to tour at the time when they should have been at their peak. Their influence on American bands is definitely huge though.

@Jim McCracken Ah ok. I knew something unfortunate happened that kept them from touring at a crucial point in their career , but wasn't clear on exactly what it was. They were a great band . Always did dig the Kinks

They have hillbillies in England 🇬🇧? Are there rowdy brawls in their pubs, breaking bottles over people's heads and the 600 year old church down the street tolls it's bell ...then they stop abruptly " Oh, dear...time for tea 🍵 " ?...something like that?
@BritIronRebel4 жыл бұрын
Perhaps not exactly hillbillies, but there are definitely epic rows. They don't call em English bulldogs for nothing! The "Muswell Hillblies" thing comes from the fact that The Kinks came from Muswell Hill - a suburban area of North London. You learned to protect yourself on the streets there.
