Saw this on a trip with my theatre company and the next day got to go to a workshop where we talked to an actor who played an angel and he said this is probably his favorite number because it kinda breaks the fourth wall. He also said it was because some people think they're actually women and then slowly realize what happening and he and the other Angels can see this and it's hilarious. They can also see people checking them out and then realizing they're men and avoiding eye contact for like, half of the show.
