This would've been a wonderful 50 episode anime, since each episode has its own separate story and characters aside from obviously kino and hermes. Animes like this should be way more than just a mere few episodes.

I agree, there's plenty of material to work with too. The Light Novel is about 17 volumes long so far and the series only covered 1 volume. Unfortunately the director of the anime died though, and I can't really see it being directed by anyone else.

I love a show that can take a 30 min episode and make it its own story completely separate from everything. It’s an amazing concept when done right. And they pretty much nailed it with Kino. Unfortunately it gets costly to keep it going longer.

Have you seen Mushishi? The whole series (1st and 2nd series, along with the bonus episodes) make it equivalent to a 50+ episodic Anime that has a similar vibe with Kino, in that both MC's are travellers and encounter different people.

キノの旅と出会ったのは中学一年生の時、図書室で表紙が気に入ったので借りました。確か、雪から雨に変わり始めた2月、天気が悪い日に家でずっと読んでました。旧アニメも見て、新しい方はその後やってた。あの時期が1番楽しかったな…ちょっと恋しいかも。

It's a big shame that they only aired 13 episodes, 2 movies and 1 prologue to this light novel. I got hooked on the anime after a few episodes and soon fell in love with her only to realize it was just a short series. Very underrated and one of the best stand alone series I've seen

Legoldos They were working on a "spiritual successor" to Lain called Despera. Last I heard the project was put on hold when the director found out he had cancer. There is some old concept art, plot and character descriptions online of it, but thats about it. They might finish the project in honor of him, but its unlikely. Sad to see such a good man die.

initially comes off as a children's anime, but upon closer inspection you can see that it is actually very deep and reflects the real world with just a slight fantastic twist. it's really a beautiful anime. each episode isn't formulaic but they're self-contained(for the most part).

Kino is definately one of the wisest, logical, melloist, and realistic anime heroines ever created with no visably exagerarted personality quirks in any way. Also, because she's from an allegory all of her circumstances are supposed to by thought provoking.

waldicky limbong Kino has a mental trauma, and her whole development is based on the events of her indentyfying herself as a boy (the wanderer that visited her village) and her talking to hermes (out of lonliness nad lack of constant companionship). If you watch the anime closely, you may notice that it is hard to confirm if people are actually responding to hermes. And read the novels if you are interested. Theres way more than in the anime there. Pantyshot would break the whole story :c but i think they are present in kino gakuen, the official parody.

waldicky limbong Yea also kino dosent care how people refer to her as. there are chapters when people understand she is a girl and chapters where people think she is a boy. she goes off of what ever they say. kino is kino. And if she lacked companionship she would stay in a country past 3 days shes a traveler and a observer. the only trauma i think she has if the fear of becoming to attatched toa counrty and thus not being a traveler any more thats why she stays 3 days no more.

waldicky limbong I went to check it. Actually, nope :D. First thing is, when they respond to him they never look at him. For second, in the whole series of novels there is no instance of another talking vechicle. There are times where Hermes tries to talk with other motorrad (with is german for motocycle actually.) but they never respond, so he ends up calling them "shy". If he would be special, I doubt keichii would skip his backstory.

Same for me! I finished the series very recently, and immediately afterwards started planning on going travelling ASAP. That night I finished watching the last episode, I walked to the nearby beach, and meditated on the pier in order to try doing an out of body experience outdoors for the first time. It was one of the most precious moments of my life, and I'll never forget it as long as I live. Can't wait to watch the episode 0 and the 2 movies for the series that I found out about today =D
