Was there last year, nice town with really good onsen. I recommend at least a 2 night stay, because a stay in an onsen town should be relaxing and with an 1 night stay you dont really have the time to calm down. Another thing i recommend is to book the stay after a few days full of action. I was 5 days in Kyoto (Gion Matsuri, Fushimi Inari-Taisha, Imperial Palace, Nishi-Honganji-Temple etc) before i went to Kinosaki and this order was perfect... Another great onsen town is Kusatsu!

I'm trying to book a place in the main area itself for this Christmas and my gosh are the rooms very expensive. The cheapest one's are around $200 per person. They do come with breakfast and dinner.
