The festival returns to cinema screens for its 22nd edition from 6 March to 28 March 2024 with a particularly diverse array of new Polish films from the last year, from the traditional to the avant-garde, presented alongside documentaries, animations and virtual reality. With an exciting programme of compelling and challenging cinema, Kinoteka continues to explore the innovative filmic output Poland has to offer through screenings as well as guest-led intros, Q&As, workshops and more. A highlight this year includes a Late Night rave party at the Southbank Centre, inspired by the 90s Polish Rave Scene, which is explored during an earlier film screening.
Kicking of this year’s festival, the Opening Night Gala screening of Green Border at the BFI Southbank followed by a Q&A with acclaimed veteran Polish director Agnieszka Holland. Inspired by real events and the immigration crisis that took place on the Polish-Belarusian border with a focus on the experience of the immigrants caught up in events, this poignant and topical new feature challenges us to reflect on the moral choices that fall to ordinary people every day.
Our New Polish Cinema strand will this year take place at The Prince Charles Cinema, ICA, Richmix, Cine Lumiere and Watermans Arts Centre. The nine films in this strand, which include the Opening Gala screening, include dramas, thrillers, action and comedies. Among them the critically acclaimed Scarborn (Kos).
This year's programme also features three particularly hard-hitting documentaries, the award-winning In the Rearview, which was shortlisted for a 2024 Academy Award in the Documentary Feature Film category, the unsettling Danger Zone and though-provoking arthouse doc Home.
As part of our commitment to interactive events that push the boundaries of film, this year we return with the second edition of the XRossspace Showcase, a section of the programme focused on the most innovative, immersive XR works from Poland.
Bringing this year’s festival to a close, will be a Closing Gala screening of The Peasants with a live music accompaniment which will allow viewers to immerse themselves in a cinematic journey enriched by the live performances of five talented musicians from the Rebel Babel Film Orchestra, under the guidance of Łukasz L.U.C. Rostkowski, the acclaimed composer of the film's original soundtrack.
In addition, later in April, Kinoteka will also return to Edinburgh with a selection of screenings (keep an eye out for further updates on these.)
