Maggie Smith’s character is such a joy to watch, I remember the day after Sybil died and Lady Grantham walked into the house dressed in black and that short walk said so much about her character, it was quite moving.

The way she leaned against the column, her grief momentarily overcoming her British stoicism, was brilliant.

Yes. We all talk about Violet's hilarious one-liners (of which there are many), but she also has some very powerful scenes that are more serious, and Maggie Smith plays them all perfectly.

I cried so much to this scene! The sadness of young passing away before the old and how the elderly feels about that was portrayed brilliantly!

I felt she (the dowager countess) was perhaps closer to her grandchildren than her own children. As when she raised her own children, they only saw her for a small time each week, and they were mostly raised by a nanny and governess. Things were always kept formal, and emotions not shown. Whereas she spent much more normal time playing with her grandchildren, and seemed to know them quite intimately. And the shock of an unexpected death of somebody so much younger than her dying. I think a lot of families from this era and even later eras would say the same for their children and grandchildren. My grandmother was apparently very strict, but loving with my mother and her brother, whereas she was very soft and generous with her 3 grandchildren - my 2 brothers and myself. And I’m only 31.

Downton became compulsive viewing, largely due to avidly waiting for what gem the Dowager Duchess would come out with next. Which is not to downplay everyone elses contribution,it was a stellar cast. Dame Maggie just brought that little bit extra to each episode she appeared in, as she invariably does with every role she plays. The lights will definitely go out in the West End when she finally leaves us.

Maggie is one of the 10 best actresses on the planet. The UK is in possession of a load of excellent actors capable of a depth in every role that puts them in an extra special class above any country on earth. Of course countries like the US,France, Italy, Germany and India have some famous and good actors sutch as Merell Streep, Sophia Lauren ore Catarine The Neuve but the UK is something special when it comes to acting. Said by a Dutchman.
@yannickdrmda52953 жыл бұрын
How can you not have a single name of these legendary actresses correct.
@flav26893 жыл бұрын
Meryl Streep* Catherine Deneuve* Sophia Loren* I’m sorry, the names of the legends just must be written correctly. 😱 But speaking about the UK - how did you not mention Dames Helen Mirren and Judi Dench? For Brits I would add also Dame Patricia Routledge. And by the way, Germany and India don’t really compare at all with the others - UK, US, Italy and France are on the top when it comes to acting.
@flav26893 жыл бұрын
@@yannickdrmda5295 Outch, harsh... I thought the same but it can be a bit tricky for us non-natives (assuming he is one, like me) to remember the correct writing form, since the pronunciation and the writing differ from each other significantly - it’s not always logical to us and it doesn’t come naturally. It’s hard to explain (in general too - not to mention in another language than your mother tongue) - but it’s a real language thing actually. It’s just how English speakers pronounce alphabets, combined/attached vowels etc. It differs from the other systems (which are more similar to each other). Sorry if I’m boring you, I used to study languages at uni before I switched to general literature. Old habits die hard. 😅

Love Downton Abbey, then you will love C.A MacRae's Gemini Complex, The Cabal: After the final demise of the Cathars at Chateau Mount Montségur in the south of France in 1244, a heroic rescue by a Knights Templar took place. Six hundred and fifty-three years later a murder and spate of suspicious deaths of the clergy become linked in the south of France. Flo’s first day (10th November 1918) at Chandringham doesn’t work out quite how she imagined. A bright but humble farm girl finds herself thrust into the upper echelons of society. Rather than being trained in the everyday tasks of a maid, she’s told she needs to leave her old life behind and immerse herself in the life of the aristocracy, as Lady Mary Tavistock. Her world is turned upside down, Flo realises she’s not the person she’s always thought she was and to make matters worse she finds out her life is endangered. In order to make sense of who she really is and what her purpose in life is, she’s sent to Switzerland to meet others of her kind. the first book of a trilogy. It's going to be released later this year.
