You probably won’t see this, but I have some tips for working with silver metal clay, I work with it for part of my business and have some videos on my second channel Jodie Boo. Use a barrier cream on your fingers to stop the wet clay from sticking to fingers and tools, it’s very sticky. It’s not great for sculpting so you’re better off making a sculpy model and casting it in two part silicon to make a mould. To make a ring for hanging, add a flat circle of clay to the top and when it’s still clay, but dried, use a small drill bit to put a hole in it. You can keep adding water to moisten the clay as it dries and working in a colder environment helps stop it drying. You can let it air dry for 24hrs, you don’t want any moisture in it when fired as it’ll creak or explode. And you can use a small butane torch (creme brûlée torch) to fire the clay instead of that ceramic kiln. The torch just needs to reach over 600 degrees to fire silver and heat the piece evenly for 4-5 minutes. You have to keep the flame moving or risk melting it.

@preciousdanielle5914

We're allergic to alloy, it is because of the coating used by the manufacturer. You don't have to buy precious metals, but you could buy stainless steel jewelry. If ut is alloy (mixed metal) or if it is "gold plated" jewelry it would tarnish on your skin because you may probably have an acidic skin.

Jackie: "oh DVD you have blessed us from the 1990s" As someone who grew up in the 90s, despite DVDs first releasing in 97 most people still had tapes/vhs for like another 7-8 years. When they first released DVDs were stupidly expensive compared to tapes and that wasn't even bringing in buying a new device for playing them into it! As such DVDs are more a 2000's thing rather than 90s

Look at it this way, no one can take them away from you (I have multiple backups of my computer stuff on multiple devices, DVD -R, flash drives, external HD, and drop box... yet I still don’t trust it to still be there in a couple years. I refuse to buy ebooks if they don’t let me back them up, and I buy cds still. I honestly doubt digital media will still be online a decade from now. Netflix can’t even keep some series available for more than a couple years before removing them. Remember, licensing changes over time. When that happens it’s discontinued and will be removed from streaming. DVDs and blu ray will keep for decades if taken care of.

Engineering grain here! What you are doing is metallurgy! It's most likely made by Mitsubishi because a large number of car parts are made through powdered metal (albeit without the clay). In most manufacturing places powered metal comes in large buckets and is pressed in molds using high force. After they have been pressed they are placed into an oven and heated to a certain temp. They are then permitted to rest in a warm environment to fully harden. These parts can then be used on planes, car, boats, etc. After powdered metal is pressed together (but before heating) it becomes EXTREMELY fragile, which is probably why they had you heat it with a hair dryer prior to sanding, so your crafted piece doesn't break apart during sanding. When you said they don't have ovens putting it in a small "heater" makes sense. Why they also tell you to wait 24hrs also makes sense, otherwise your part would not have become fully hardened and safe to use. Tldr powdered metal is cool but so help you if you breathe it in because all you'll smell is metal for the rest of the day.

yep, rio grande is a professional jewelry-making supply company, it's legit. they've had the clay for yeaaaars, and I've wanted to try it for a long time, I just thought you had to have a pottery kiln to use it. Now I need to look at their site again and see if they have this starter kit!

Jackie, you're THINKING wrong! A DVD really comes in handy if you don't have internet at home. Not everyone has all the comforts of home AT home, so don't dis the DVDs. I am very happy that you have done this kit, because I have one that I have been afraid to do. I got it from my mom the Christmas before she died. I didn't want to make something that turned out to be "carp" and hate myself because of it. So it's been in storage for 10 years. Watching you complete this kit has given me more confidence. My kit is a bit different though. Mine comes with a blow torch, so that brings my confidence back down a little. I do have enough confidence to give it a go though, and I have you to thank for it. As I am currently in the middle of sewing projects tho, it will have to wait until I finish up with that. I thank you so much for the crafts you do, for including Sika in some of them, and for just being you. I love you, Sika, Angel, and even your cats (I'm a dog person. Little chihuahua, but still a dog person). I look forward to every episode. Stay healthy & safe! #feedSika! 😁

I've used PMC! My heart dog was a 3lb Chihuahua. I used a piece of clay and made a pendant with her pawprint, then took it to a local jewelry crafting store where they fired it for me. Now that she's passed away, it is a super special keepsake for me. I totally want this kit to play more with PMC! I hear you on how quickly it dries! I had to use a lot of water to smooth my pendant out and work very efficiently.

I've read about metal clay a lot and from what I've learned is that the clay needs to remain moist or it will create those cracks. A lot of designers keep a humidifier around or they wet their fingers to keep the moisture in. You did great and I love the little salty salt!

This is precious metal clay and is sold in several brands. You can easily order it. You get so little clay because the “clay” is pure silver (not sterling) mixed with earthen clay to make it workable. The clay easily dries out and should be stored in plastic wrap spritzed with a little water or under a wet paper towel while working with it to keep it from drying out. Water can be used to smooth out cracks or unwanted impressions such as fingerprints. The easiest way to add details like your eyes and mouth on the salt jar is to make slip. Use a teensy amount of clay and mix with some water to make liquid clay. Use that as the glue to attach details. Oil can be used to prevent sticking to molds and tools. Be careful not to waste clay. Every speck of PMC is pure silver so wasting it means literally money in the trash. Once happy with your piece it needs to dry completely. Then you can sand away fingerprints or rough edges. When you fire the clay the actual clay burns off leaving only the metal behind. Once the fired piece is cooled the particles of silver are all at different angles so the piece looks rough and white. Using the metal brush to brush the piece using one direction only lays the particles down facing the same direction giving you the shiny metal finish. After that you can use a buffing cloth or burnishing tool for a high shine. Now that you have the little kiln you should be able to easily order more clay and more fuel if you wish. No need to go all the way to Japan. Hope this helps. I took classes in PMC work several years ago.

As a jeweler I can tell you that PMC3 has been around for at least 15 years, and is made of I believe 95% pure metal with the remainder being nontoxic binding agents. There is a slight bit of shrinkage, so you can't directly use normal ring sizing or make a ring to fit your finger because it will shrink due to the water loss and binders burning off from the clay. You likely had dryness issues because you were working on cardboard which was sucking the water out of the clay like a sponge. My favorite jewelry magazine, Lapidary Journal which is actually precious and semi-precious rock and stone based jewelry, seems to have a project that requires PMC (which stands for precious metal clay) at least every other month or two months. It has become a very popular medium to work with. PMC3 is not just available in different metals, but the metals are available in different forms. You can get the regular clay like you had, but you can also get sheets of clay, strips, tubes of paste clay for attaching pieces or making small details...I'm sure there's other forms I'm forgetting, but it's not a medium I work in. I've heard it takes a learning curve, but every media does. Your little mini kiln is handy if you don't have access to an oven, or don't want to risk contamination of your jewelry with food particles. For a nicer finish I'd recommend using a brass bristle brush and dish soap instead of steel to burnish the piece after firing. Get a small basin of water, wet your piece, add the soap to the brush and brush away. Then once it's nice and shiny you can dunk it in the water and rinse it off and rinse your brush. It's ok to pour the water down the drain. The only reason you don't use the sink is you don't want to accidentally drop your piece down the drain!

For those you are interested in metal clay you can find kits in the US, fire mountain gems has them. Sold fuel is common at buffets you should be able to get it at a restaurant supply, and their are microwave kilns used for pmc, fused glass and enameling. This clay has been around a 20+ years and there is a lot of great information available and variations of the clay.

I wanna post some random nerdy info here. Those cute Posca Markers are actually also produced by Mitsubishi. Their brand name for stationery is Uni. I'm also more familiar with their cars and find it interesting that they also have a branch for stationery. Their stationery come with advanced technology. Like for example they have this mechanical pencil called Uni Kuru Toga that can sharpen the lead by itself so the lead will always have an even surface. Very cool imo. Anyway, great job as always, Jackie! I've just recently discovered your channel and can't stop watching! Love how you can be both informative and entertaining!

I highly doubt this is real metal, I'm not sure though. I just don't understand what is happening that could turn this into actual solid silver. My theory is that it is more of a glaze that has been dried out and made into a clay-like consistency. I also don't know much about metal making so I could be wrong, but I do know a little about ceramics and clay. With that said and even for the price it is still worth it because ceramics is expensive and you might be able to use this to make ceramic charms, mini pots, other jewelry and nick-nack possibilities.
@LaynieFingers
@LaynieFingers 3 жыл бұрын
@@tanyahandley3466 This really is actual fine silver. There are silver particles suspended in the clay along with a binder. When it's fired, the clay parts burn off while the silver particles fuse together in a process called sintering. It's the same process used by 3D printers that produce metal prints. The clay she's using is called Precious Metal Clay and it comes in several different metals like bronze, silver, and gold. It's really interesting stuff!

Hi Jackie. The yellow thing is some sort of liver of sulfur, to oxidize the silver (you can make the NC carving pop out even more). I also think that because most of these metal clays are 999, that's why they don't cause alergy compared to the 925 silver. And yes, PMC actually does have a KZbin channel.
