29:30 they are and factorio unironically made me a lover of train based infrastructure, all my bases nowadays are designed around "city blocks" designed around using 1-1 (1 engine, 1 wagon) nuclear powered trains to haul everything to wherever.

For the biters, I believe he's running the mod that makes them more aggressive and allows them to expand their nests without needing your reach the area.

17:43 Thankfully no, the biters don't spawn in areas you don't have radar coverage in, in order for a new nest to be made an expansion party from an existing nest has to physically walk to a new location and build a new nest. Martin's issue was that he had made a narrow moat that the spitters could still shoot over, and one of his biter mods added a spitter that spawns more biters wherever the spitter shot lands, effectively bypassing the moat and allowing biters to enter the base and build nests. This all became irrelevant after they turned the base into an island since the biters have no way of crossing an ocean (at least not without mods).

Not sure if anyone mentioned it (and I'm much too tired to be arsed to look) but if you're just interested in the building/crafting/engineering/maths/timing aspect of Factorio (supported by immense amounts of mods) there's a switch to peaceful mode. (It doesn't need a mod for that, it's in vanilla.) Just mentioning since you say once or twice that you're garbage at RTS's.
