It's the oldest trick in any politician's book - "expose" something bad, blame it on the other politician, and promise they will fix it because they are "good". Yet we have been falling for this kind of scam for hundreds of years and still, people fall for it.

It's funny that he made a career exposing these corporations despite all of the info is available to the public kinda shows how lazy a lot of people have become when it comes to research. I don't want to sound like a boomer, but people nowadays don't think for themselves and because the education system is so fucked they *need* to rely on people who have more free time and energy to do all of that type of research. In a world were people, especially Americans, are sick and tired of being exploited by billionaires who take advantage of the system, they do nothing to stop it nor try to fix it because they feel that no matter how hard they try, they're efforts are gonna get fucked over by the next guy and the cycle never ends. Jake Tran knows this. He knows his fanbase are gullible. He knows they're easy to get swayed to his side. And as a result, he exploited them by giving them shitty apps that 'supposedly' gives people tips on how to make money fast. By going after shady corporations, he's learning how to be shady himself. He's not Edward Snowden. He's not even a renown journalist. He's a manipulative piece of shit who goes after vulnerable people thinking he's on their side, but in reality all Jake will ever see them as is a quick paycheck.

A classic story of building a brand by grinding rep with your customers and then transitioning to withdrawing from your brand and reaping the rewards. Yep, I enjoyed his documentaries when he narrated them, some were quite interesting. Though always skipped past the ads/sponsor segments. And as soon as he stopped narrating, and he got other people to basically do it for him. It became generic, overly dramatised, repeat snippets several times, American documentary style that just instantly turns me off and unsubbed. And saw what he was doing too, built up his rep, let other people do it in his place while he reaps the rewards.

I watched this guy channel since the inception. He was fully open on his practices (YT or journalism was not a passion but a get rich quick scheme for him), I was aware of the shady ads but did not care because that was not a channel oriented to a young audience (and his content was never about him, not like a classical influencer per se). Content is king and I liked discovering new subjects and making my own research on it after. At one point quality started to drop, the new voices didn't sound as good as his own and it is really important in this type of content. People started to complain a lot in the comments, myself included because the quality of the scripts and the subjects chosen started to take a nosedive. This is a perfect example of when outrage spins out of control. At some point (ca. 2016) their terms of service allegedly read: “we do not control the quality of the Counselor Services and we do not determine whether any Counselor is qualified to provide any specific service as well as whether a Counselor is categorized correctly or matched correctly to you,..." This does not means that there are no qualified mental health professionals. It just means that betterhelp didn't have to check their credibility and the responsibility was passed on to the clients. It's also crappy but wording shows the difference between nuance and falsehoods. Today, the terms and conditions express that credibility is checked and to what extent with regard to the therapists in the US, UK & Australia. I use betterhelp and I'm pleased to share that I was thankfully assigned a real professional. People like to fault youtubers for making commissions with sponsorships like this but it's no different from any other company to me. As long as I'm made aware of the sponsorship, every decision is of my own volition not the influencer's. Besides, if my favourite KZbinrs hadn't continuously shoved betterhelp down my throat, I may have never really considered well needed therapy.

@NelsonStJames

I don't agree with it, but what I've come to accept is that I have no control over it. Jake Tran obviously can't get rich at my expense, because he has no appeal to me. He succeeds because he is on some level giving people what they want, or he would fail. So being angry at Tran is equivalent to being angry at a large demographic of people that I have to accept are there -- and trust me if you look at the state of the world, there are a lot of terrible mindsets and ideologies out there. I don't have the time, nor the energy to worry about any of them, only to be knowledgeable enough about them to figure out how to avoid them and which are a direct threat. If I'm super angry just because someone got rich by unscrupulous means that didn't affect me personally than I've probably got some issues like envy, or jealous in my subconscious that I need to check unless I'm that rare individual that gets angry over every injustice and not specific ones -- and I happen to know that I'm not.

Mothers and fathers have to make money for their families, it does not mean they are untrustworthy and evil. But if they were solely dedicated to hustling and getting rich and their family coming second and suffering for it, then yeah those labels may apply. I mean technically, a corporation is simply a group of people or other entities that act as one entity legally, i.e. a brand like Amazon. An honest mom and pop shop could be a corporation and I would consider them a friend, whereas some lone grifter I would not consider my friend. There are also sole proprietorships in which a business is wholly owned by and is essentially one individual, which can be better or worse than a corporation. I could go on with examples but it is unfortunate how oversimplified or wrong that the average person or KZbin commenter is about various topics. There is nothing wrong about that, until they start acting like they do know and tell other people misguided or false information confidently, as you have done.
@Xdgvy

@@KovoriaTheConquerer Fair enough, I will tweak my definition: Something that *only exists* to make money. As for the second part, I disagree. Mom and pop shops don't care about you either. Now, mom and pop care about you (assuming a small enough consumer base) and they value your money- and can even value you as a person. But the shop only exists to make money. Same thing with proprietorships; but the point isn't that people can't be your friend, the point is that a nonliving entity with *literally only one goal* is not your friend. As for why my answer was so simple? The complexities of corporate structure in this context have less bearing on the topic at hand IMO. I kept it simple, but (as you rightly pointed out) I missed two very important words. I have rectified it here. Edit because I'm dumb and phones are not conducive to typing.

Catch is, they (Jake and his team) would only reach out if they used the exact thumbnail text and title you submitted. So, they'd make a video using the idea, but change the title and the thumbnail so they never had to contact the person who submitted the idea since it wasn't the exact title and thumbnail idea. They would also claim that your exact video idea, title and thumbnail were already in their video backlog if you ever reached out about them making a video with your idea.

His content fell off fast, the scams got old, and he got lazy with not even voicing his content anymore Then he showed his true colors as everyone (who isn't stupid) expected after Coffeezilla made his video, but by then I was already well aware of the poison jake was spewing with his scam promoting

Hey Kira, Love that you finally expose him as well. I woud like to add and you should do a follow up on this, how much he plagiarizes videos from popular european documentaries (coffe beans, chocolate industry etc) and just copies them word by word, he should really get copyright sued or something.

Its amazing that everyone that retells the JT story miss the fact that he not only looked up to Graham Stephan, but paid for his "become a youtuber like me" course and got a massive boost from Graham parading him around using his success as proof his course works lol. he got a nice little hand up and im sure it give him a nice boost, but its hard to deny that he can make some good content. no where near good enough for him to be acting like David Lynch or Stanley Kubrick, he thinks he is making god tier masterpieces but the truth is he is just average imho. nothing special about his content (not saying its bad or not well made) you can find hundreds of videos like that from channels that have like no subs. he was one of the lucky ones, if anything.

I really don't mind all of this. The ads are iffy, but if they're being allowed on KZbin then that's KZbin's issue. Everything else just seems like good business. The man was utterly transparent that the money was the priority, not the content. Like he himself said, what did you expect?

I have to add something. Not only the YT Algorithm doesn't care, a significant part of the internet community also doesn't care. As long as you follow the rules of the Internet, you can be exploitive and evil. In his case this would be the rules: - be transparent - never apologize - be entertaining or informative and keep producing content And he will keep being successful until somebody else comes along and does a better job. At one point he will get lazy and somebody else comes along and does a better job. Maybe this someone is even a former contractor and script writer. And then we will see, if he understands all rules of the internet. He can either comeback and regrow or punch down, trying to shut down this new rival. - never punch down the internet roots for the underdog
