Kirby Canvas Curse - Drawcia Soul - Oscilloscope Deconstruction

The first DS track I've deconstructed! This one was a doozey to make it sound right and if you're finding the loop sounds janky, that's because it does. The midi file that the VGMtrans program spit out does not have any sort of looping so I had to manually sticky tape the looping point together. Enjoy!

Please note that DS music is deconstructable, it doesn't always sound correct. Case in point for this track, certain instruments don't play at the correct volume compared to the original such as channel 5's popping from ear to ear. In the original sound track it's much louder and harsher and audible over the music. Also also, the program I used to achieve this is not without its problems. I was originally going to load some Animal Crossing wild world music as the game I wanted to test this with but it would crash any time I tried to even load music to be extracted. If anyone is familiar with VGMtrans and knows how to rip DS music to midi with correct instrumentation and looping then please let me know!

With correcting the instrumentation and the looping what I do is I open garageband (yes I'm a beta mac user) and lmms and map the soundfont with the midi that way. With lmms there's a problem with the pitch bend, and with garageband everything is overcomplicated, but I tend to use that one anyway. Then I export the tracks and put them in foobar for the oscilliscopes. With this comes a near exact replica, as I haven't been able to hear much of a difference. I'm sure there are easier ways to do it, and it'd be great to hear what your strategy is.

But game hardware that is mostly reliant on MIDIs rather than pre-rendered audio files began to die off in the 90s as the CD-based consoles began to take over, leaving the N64 as the sole console of the 5th-generation entirely reliant on MIDIs for music, and the GBA as the only 6th-generation device entirely reliant on MIDIs. And the DS even started to experiment with pre-rendered audio codecs as the final MIDI-reliant game device. But starting with the 3DS in 2011, MIDIs represent less than 1 percent of all music made for 8th generation game hardware. And that’s a shame, considering how advanced MIDIs had gotten to be in some Wii games such as Super Smash Bros Brawl.

ive always heard these MIDI-like music that games used that have custom samples and soundfonts always called "Sequenced" music also, did you know the wii was still able to play sequenced music? From what I've seen, theyre in Wii Shop Channel, Mii Channel, and some of the tracks in Wario Ware Smooth Moves and Rhythm Heaven Fever

there's LOTS of misinfo about midi in consoles. the ds does not primarily use midi, it uses SSEQ, a custom format by nintendo in their standard "Nitro Composer" sound engine. vgmtrans is a convertor, not a ripping tool, hence the inaccuracies. the gba, ps1, 3ds, really any console that uses sequenced music typically use their own formats, which vary from game to game, sound engine to sound engine. people are always just gonna call these formats midi, when they are not midi. people always do the same for the soundbanks, calling them soundfonts. huge pet peeve of mine as a vgm ripper because it lead me down a hellhole of misinfo when i started.

i've never thought about the ds's sound hardware. it looks like 16 stereo channels with each channel either fm synth or sample playback, and also it looks totally luxurious!

The ds is mostly software synthesis, like the GBA and N64, no unique sound hardware (the gba does have the DMG apu, but the GBA unique sound stuff is all software synth). The ds supports 16 pcm channels, half of those channels have a "PSG" mode with 2 of them being noise, the psg may be hardware but idk. pretty sure it's soft synth too.

This is basically a Glitch genre track made by Nintendo, and its a one of its kind as it actually instills fear in you when you hear it, along with the scream certainly would scare off a kid. As they always say: You know, for kids! (Credit goes to Nostalgia Critic for making that meme). We had Giygas (that was the scariest and most traumatizing boss Nintendo has ever made), Drawcia Soul (Both the scream and the music), Marx Soul (that scream), and so many other bosses that Nintendo strictly designed to scare you, but does not intend to traumatize a kid, which sadly is the unintended effect there. Well at least Nintendo has done a lot better in not scaring off kids but they still do that screw up from time to time.

Jun Ishikawa is a huge fan of electronic music, a lot of songs from this composer are often inspired by various electronic genres such as Ambient, Techno, Glitch, IDM or even Dubstep, he's usually the one who makes the fast-paced songs in the series while Hirokazu Ando mostly handles acoustic based and orchestrated pieces, though Ando also made a couple of fast-paced songs as well.
