If we go by anime canon, one of those apples is also Whispy's _soul_ , essentially. So he doesn't just fight by throwing infinite food at you during a food shortage, but by throwing his soul at you. This is a very good plan, that he clearly put a great deal of thought into.

Kirby's difficulty philosophy is honestly amazing when you consider how old this game is. There are AAA games released for the current generation that still have Hard modes that boil down to "enemies have twice as much health and deal more damage". But this game does NOT increase enemy health (one of the most important things to me in any game that doesn't have RPG elements), and instead just makes enemies faster, makes patterns require more effort and attention, and sometimes you take more damage so there's a lower margin of error! I would say the biggest issue is just that Extra Game kind of hits you with a lot of "gotcha!" elements (like enemies that fly out of nowhere at super speed), but hey, the game's about to turn 30, it doesn't need a flawless "dated" score. Oh, and honestly, I think the hardest thing to go back to is how stiff the controls are! Playing with inhaling is still a thing you do in modern games, but man, is it awkward to move around a little in this game. I feel the same with Dream Land 2 and Adventure. So many things just control weirdly.

I mean, you do realize that this here games fits into a cartridge that had a max storage space of 8 Mb right? Changing "AI" behavior in this code was ... simpler so I get why a lot of modern games have trouble making "true" adjustments for the difficulty levels. I do agree with you tho. I am someone who likes to play and beat games on a difficulty setting I find to be a challenge - (very much depends on the game what that is, I'm happy I can beat Dead Cells at anything above two mutators (out of 5 last time I played), I've tried but gave up on Doom 2016 (and Eternal) Ultra-Nightmare, beat all SoulsBorn games at soul level 1) - and when the only thing that changes is "more health for enemies, less effective health for you" 9/10 times the highest setting tends to be more of a grind than a challenge.

This game being shaped by its limitations was frankly for the better. I think a harder difficulty is more poignant if it affects things like AI instead of simply things like enemy positioning and damage/HP modifiers. Especially in other games like JRPGs where the difficulty lives and dies by its enemy AI.

Those games control wonderfully. It’s the later games that are garbage. I just want to be able to jump and dodge with precise control, but no, the modern games games it so pressing A Button again (as you land from a previous jump) makes Kirby inhale and float…instead of jumping again. If I wanted to inhale, I’d press up on the Control Pad. Being able to jump, duck, and enter float mode at the exact perfect times is essential to beating this game on Hard Mode. And it just pisses me off that, with all the improvements they made, they made such an obvious downgrade. On paper, it seems like a good idea, but I’m practice, it’s no good.

@@Schwarzorn I think the change was necessary because of abilities requiring you to press up to do certain attacks. A problem I have with Amazing Mirror and Squeak Squad is that some abilities have attacks that make you press up, but pressing up also makes you float. This leads to a to of mis-inputed floats and often causes you to get hit. You have to be annoyingly precise and it's frustrating. Also, jumping causes you to move upwards faster than floating, so it really doesn't bother me that you have to jump before you can float. If anything it just makes attacks easier to react to.

@@silvergalaxia8538 I wasn't complaining about needing to jump in order to float. I was complaining that by adding that, it made jumping imprecise. Instead of jumping again immediately upon landing, you'd sometimes float, which gets you hit by the enemy you were trying to jump over.

Life tip: if you get a fish hook stuck in your skin, follow the curve and push the point and the barb forward out of your skin, then clip the point and barb off with wire cutters before withdrawing the hook. Trying to back out with the barb still on it will do more damage to you

I like how Super Star Ultra actually references the extra game here in Revenge of the King. It's pretty much the harder version of Spring Breeze like how the extra game here is the harder game of this game. They even have the same versions of the enemies showing up in the extra game show up in Revenge of the King.

Honestly, Jon thinking that this game was hard was a total mood. I was a pretty dumb kid and ended up getting this game on 3ds virtual console, and for the longest time i couldnt beat not only Kabula, but also Dedede.

I thought the Second Playthrough of Kirby's Dream Land wasn't bad. As I've learned in that race we did on your Twitch channel, all you have to do is pick Bulbasaur or Squirtle, and you should be able to take down Brock's Geodude and Onix fairly quickly without too much trouble. If you pick Charmander, though, using Ember only isn't too bad. ...what? Why are you staring at me all funny like that?

Thing about using Bulbasaur is: you have to get to level 12 to get a grass type move. Until then, you’re stuck with tackle. Granted, you can then one-shot both of his Pokemon at that point, but until then, you have to grind (although, Squirtle’s lv 8 move is bubble)

I tried that "challenge run" myself earlier this year (partially anyway. I just did the one hit point, not the 1 life). Kabula was easily the most dreadful part of it because it is SO HARD to avoid all of her shots in Extra Mode (yes, the blimp is apparently a she), not to mention that Kirby also flies slowly and has a big hitbox. Couldn't be bothered to fight her without a save state right before the battle. Also, I wouldn't say schmups are uncommon in Kirby games; they show up at least once in practically every mainline entry. Planet Robobot and Star Allies even put them in a few regular stages.

A few interesting things to note on Kirby’s Dream Land: A. Beware of the nose of Whispy during Extra Game, 2. In Normal Game, there’s a exploit in the Kaboola Fight that you can do, just stay in the Top Right corner. WARNING: Stay away from the Top Left corner during the fight, it’s a 1-Hit KO Glitch. & 3. Those faces King Dedede makes after the credits roll did show up in another Kirby game

The hand on the game over screen is absolutely Master Hand. Or, more accurately, Sakurai's hand. If kirby messes up, the hand urges him to keep trying. If Kirby gives up, the hand punishes him. Like a parent. Kirby is Sakurai's baby, and Sakurai is the one urging him not to give up.

Man, I think this was my first ever video game - and I agree, as a kid, it was really hard! I had to get one of my cousins to beat Lololo and Lalala for me, and I know for a fact I never finished it. Heck, I only remember fighting Krakow once, and only made to him again with help. I know I didn't find any of the secrets either, and I DEFINITELY didn't know about Extra Game. Still, to this day the Kirby theme music never fails to make me smile. I bought one of the 3DS backgrounds and would sometimes just leave my system open playing that music just because it makes me so happy.

As a teenager I played a lot of gameboy and GBA games on emulator because it was hard for me to get a lot of new modern games. So I actually played the original version of this game a lot and didnt even see the super star version until the SNES classic. Also that intentional death ended up being the reason you didnt die to Dedede, because it reset your HP.

Yo, it's Kirby's Dream Land! As a kid, all I had was a Game Boy Color and a few games, most of which were second-hand Game Boy games. This was one of those, and one of my favorites. I still like it today; the control is just incredibly smooth. Very few Kirby games that came after feel as smooth to play as this one, one of the few (and another one of my favorites) being Mouse Attack/Squeak Squad. I just love the momentum you can maintain; it doesn't feel as stiff as, say, Super Star.

The idea of the Kirby game over hand being master hand is actually more likely than you'd think! while it isn't completely confirmed, the hand reappears throughout the series and starting in Return to Dreamland on the Wii, it is actually referred to as Master Hand in the files.

Not sure if you didn't know or forgot this, but in the room with stars, you could actually go up near one of the pillars and if you went all the way you could back towards the beginning of the room there is a secret 1Up on the top area that is a bit tricky to get to unless you realize you could go through a part of the pillar blocking it.

I thought there was something in that room, but I didn't remember what. You're right, the last pillar before the exit door has an overlapping sprite with the ceiling, you can jump up there and walk back to make a 1 Up spawn. Thanks for the heads up!

I like this game. I played it late (on 3DS virtual console) and was surprised by the 'no copy ability' and how short it was. It felt really unique in retrospect. And there's some good Gameboy-quality Kirby animations in this, specifically his waddle when he's eaten something.

As far as this game goes, you’re actually correct in calling them “Maximum Tomatoes”. The official guidebook for the Super Game Boy device, made by Nintendo themselves, also refers to them as such. (Also had some cool things involving the custom palettes, including ideas for self-imposed challenges, like making your character invisible. They have something like shmup fights in Kirby Star Allies, where you fly around the stage on a big star and shoot different projectiles depending on Kirby's current ability.

Even though the NA manual says it is a mint leaf, it is actually a Japanese sweet potato. In Japan, eating sweet potatoes regularly cause burping and that is what Kirby is doing when he eats that power-up.

This was my first Game Boy game, alongside Super Mario Land 2. Was a nice birthday for me. Granted, I didn't ask for this game. Never even heard of it, which is kinda funny considering how famous Kirby is, now. But I had a lot of fun with it, even if I died a lot. That blimp especially was often my undoing. Now I can (usually) beat it without taking damage.

What also throws me, going back to Kirby's Dream Land 1 - the lack of Meta-Knight! He's such a *staple* (ha hah, damn, couldn't avoid referencing the DKC playthrough for long, damn) of the series that it's weird to think he wasn't there from the very first game! But he and his minions are nowhere to be found, here, much as Kirby's powers. Go figure. Edit: Also YOU DIDN'T MENTION WHAT IS LOVE! I am *quite sure* that the challenge you mentioned from back in the day also had a requirement of playing Haddaway's "What Is Love" on loop/repeat in the background for the entire playthrough - because copyrights be damned in 2007, we were gonna have fun!
