The assembly code appears to be a bunch of subroutine jumps, possibly related to a movement system. It's a lot of loading in variables and jumping to subroutines like "fall" and a reference to "wal" which might be "wall". This code specifically appears to be pre-loading variables to the A, X and Y registers before going to those subroutines, which are stored elsewhere for some reason. However it also contains an EQU instruction, which isn't actually an instruction. It tells the assembler to label something with a name, but those names have all been set as asterisks here. So it's had the serial numbers filed off in order to hide what it is. It also displays the same code multiple times, there's just one NES screen of it. So I can conceivably break it down here, in the sections defined by line breaks: 1. "Load variables at N2ATABL+0 (something from a table) and #2 (a commonly cited one, I have ideas what it might be later), then jump to address F000" 2. "[label redacted] load variable #2, then go to Fall but save your path back." 3. "load the value at address WRKST+6 plus the value of the X register, and if it's a positive number there, go to TES250" this one is labeled "Fal", maybe for falling code 4. same as previous, but instead if positive jump to TES240. There's also a "RTS", Return from Subroutine command here, implying this is part of one. This section is labeled "Wal" so maybe wall collision? 5. "[label redacted] load in N2ATABL+0 to A and #2 to Y, then jump to address F000" this is just 1 but they load #2 to Y instead of X. The variables are also labeled here, N2ATABL+0 as "Mov" and #2 as "Box no." These give me my two current theories, that these are either responsible for player movement or screen movement. I think #2 is either the current primary background, or the player position. And N2ATABL+0 is either the Picture Processor flags relating to display (which are at address 2A00, a position that label may indicate) or a variable relating to how fast the player is moving. 6. Same as 3 and 4, but branch to TES300. 7. "Logically AND the value in current memory A with 7F, then store at the address WRKST+8 plus the value in the X register" This is the only one where actual math occurs. I think this is basically just to take a number an turn it positive though, it's an Absolute Value operation. The code page then loops to make a better background without having to store more code, since they assumed nobody would read it in detail. They were wrong. Hope someone finds this interesting.

Since he was "knowledgeable in computer hardware and software", he probably worked a job as an IT tech before all this, so Scott was probably just reflexively answering calls like he was still on the clock: "Helpdesk, this is Scott." ...it doesn't help that in every IT dept I've ever worked, there is always one tech named Scott. (Or in lieu of a Scott, there is at least one Tim).

I feel like most videos I see on this channel end up being like 'what the hell is this Jon' followed by 'this was actually really cool Jon thanks' -insofar as I had no idea most of these games existed haha. I do really enjoy the game choices despite having no idea what I'm getting into when I click on the video.

NGL, the setup for the JP version of the game gives me some odd Assassin's Creed vibes. Putting a descendent into a computer so they can inhabit an ancestor to accomplish a mission affecting both past and future. Still blows my mind a bit that we haven't gotten a proper AC game set in Japan, seems like an easy layup, but then again when has Ubi ever done the logical thing?

31:23 "I don't know why they call it a bolo" Maybe inspired by the real life hunting weapon, the bola. Bola, also called Bolas, (Spanish: “balls”; from boleadoras), South American Indian weapon, primarily used for hunting, consisting of stone balls, usually in a group of three, attached to long, slender ropes. 47:47 Zipang for the pc engine also seems to be related to the movie. The cover has the main character and someone else probably from the movie. Cutscene features the city of gold as well. The game itself is a perfectly fine version of Solomon's Key.

HAL Labs made a Ninja Gaiden! Perfect thing to check out for Ninja Sundays! 5:42 You wouldn’t hear Big Boss complaining about that. 9:36 If I had to take a shot in the dark at it, I’d say this game has as much in common with Zipang as Street Fighter 2020 has with the rest of Street Fighter: the protagonist is at least related to the main cast and that is all because the game’s set in the distant future. 14:02 The checkpointing could use some work if I remember your Arcade Pit challenge against Tie correctly (as in there is no checkpoints except at the start of the stage and presumably at bosses). 19:27 Diffusion would be more apt. 30:14 Same way the E.M.M.I. are hunting Samus in Dread despite being research robots I guess.

Hearing Jon talk about interesting crossovers and gameplay styles before the first boss reminded me of another rare gem on the NES: The Guardian Legend. It's actually a REALLY good yet obscure game. And hearing Jon also mention Shantae earlier when I was playing Blaster Master Zero yesterday as Shantae also made everything click so I gotta give a shoutout to The Guardian Legend. It's actually another mixed-genre game like Blaster Master where it combines vertical shooter sections with top-down perspective shooter levels (similar to Blaster Master only replacing the 2D metroidvanias with vertical shooters) and the whole game is bounce back-and-forth between them, also like Blaster Master.
