making the sax solo trigger on the phase change is so dirty, that shit instantly makes me about 30 percent more stupid while my brain reserves as much space for jamming as it can, sam gendel whispers to me through that funky thing and gets me in so much trouble.

I thought it was a clarinet too at first but it's apparently a sax played in its higher register, which can make it sound like a clarinet. I can't confirm this though, I'm not too familiar with instruments and am just repeating what I heard in another comment section of this song

Sam Gendel is a saxophonist, can confirm. There's some things done intentionally to make the timbre more punchy and pitchy (esp. in higher registers, as mentioned already.)
