Intelligent words and he represents a Paradise that harks back to a simpler time. They should not be forgotten, and larger countries should be paying for the damage done to this place and its' people. God Bless the Island nation.

Except they are using the technology and products produced by these larger nations. And have been for years. The very products technologies and services...The production of which, and use of which, allegedly contributes to climate change. I am not aware that anybody is forcing them to use these things. Plus other nations, particularly those in the region, have been providing aid and funding for years. Not saying that is a bad thing. Or that they shouldn't. However sometimes, it can be counter productive. The point is. There are other sides to these issues. And like it or not! We are all living in the modern world! With all of the negatives and positives that entails. - In the end, we either make the best of it! - Or we don't! And that has always been the case! These comments are not intended as a put down. I like Kiribati and it's people. And understand the challenges they face. All the very best regards to them!

I have learned much about ag related subjects from you, I truly thank you for that. What this president says is true beyond measure. Did not Holand solve a problem similar to that, this damage is going to get worst. It sadens me our governments are so sluggish in resolving these issues.

Thank you for taking the time to respond. Really appreciate your feedback. The situation in Kiribati hasn't changed much since I last spoke to the former President. We can only hope it does for the people of Kiribati. Vinaka Rachna

Wondering what the specifications are for the largest vessel that can be safely moored for trade merchandise. I would bring in phosphate, geotextile, halophyte seed-stock and hydroponic equipment. Also, the conformation of mountains (islands are tip tops of submerged mountains) are such that there can be freshwater seepages that are submerged in the marine environment. For various reasons they are not usually ecologically important like estuaries and can be used by humans. Seeking out such resources is not only possible but relatively straight forward if you know what to do.

Tsunamis will not be the main thread of these islands. The law of Physics and the fact that these islands are far from the tectonic plates will guarantee that that will not be the case. Lucas' comment below is really worth noting. A friend of mine tried to grow sweet corn on the island of Majuro in the Marshall Islands whose soil conditions are similar to most of the islands of Kiribati (i.e. being atolls) and they did not grow well. They eventually died not due to lack of water as they were watered every day but due to poor and alkaline soil. I then tried and improved the soil by digging to a foot and a half and then replacing most of the soil with compost, chicken manure soil, steer manure soil, potting soil and some epsum salt. The result was that my corns have grown to six feet in height and are about to produce fruits! The bottom line is, work the soil and sweat it out and you will see the fruits of your labor. I did the same with my egg plants and tomatoes and I have enjoyed a taste of a really nutritious diet!

The title of this video clip is really erroneous but eye-catching! Maybe its the journalist's way of trying to catch our attention. A proper title would be: KIRIBATI - ISLANDS INUNDATED BY SEA LEVEL RISE. I am sure this alternative title would still be eye-catching and it would contain no error for the islands are NOT sinking if you get my point!

A global assessment of atoll island planform changes over the past decades Virg 25 October 2018 doi.org/10.1002/wcc.557 Over the past decades, atoll islands exhibited no widespread sign of physical destabilization in the face of sea‐level rise. A reanalysis of available data, which cover 30 Pacific and Indian Ocean atolls including 709 islands, reveals that no atoll lost land area and that 88.6% of islands were either stable or increased in area, while only 11.4% contracted. (Among the island chains to have increased in land area are Tuvalu and neighbouring Kiribati) Mmmmmmmmmmm
