I carry this knife everyday and like it a lot. The lock is so solid and secure it almost feels like a fixed blade. Was unsure about the pocket clip, but it works great. I have no problem with the blade steel or keeping the blade sharp. I don't need to cut 20lbs of cardboard everyday. If I did I would use one of my toolbox utility knives for that.

Was thinking of grabbing one for my EDC at a warehouse cutting cardboard boxes and strapping material. I do have an electric belt sander and willing to strop it daily ( I like sharpening/ stropping) but if it won't get me through an 8 hour shift I won't buy it. Do you think it would last at least 1 day?

Even with budget steels, HEAT TREAT and EDGE GEOMETRY are tantamount. CS has done very well with both.

pocket clip that won’t scratch your car in the garage. $21 knife is what it is. By the way, the Worksharp/Benchmade field sharpener you use is well worth the $40 bucks, I picked one up on the Air base, awesome field sharpener. I remember when AUS-8 that you mention was considered premium.

Exactly why I will only buy knives with plastic/polymer clips for EDC. My previous EDC was a Cold Steel Grill and even that had a rounded metal rivet in the clip that scuffed up my car door. This one has inset screws that won't cause any damage.

I simply refuse to be a steel snob. Most of my blades are 440, 1095, AUS 8, or D2, and I've never had a problem. My only so-called high end knife is my PM2 which is S30V. Each blade performs a different function, and I love them all equally.

The Kiridashi is a great little knife. The pocket clip was designed to be replaceable if it were to break. I bought one and keep in in my out-of-state traveling kit.

I’m not a steel snob either I hate a couple steels though. 5cr, 3cr, Gerber low end mystery steel to name a few. I don’t have problems with 8cr13 mov Aus8a.

I'm a female with average sized female hands and absolutely love this knife. It fits perfectly in my hand, the handle is super comfortable, I don't feel the cheap plastic pocket clip, and it cuts well. For what it is, its a great knife for the price.

I bought one to carry around a backpacking trip (wanted a cheap knife that could be lost or confiscated without hurting the wallet too much) and it performed great, and the shape made the one cop who examined it in Spain ask what it was for, and when I said I used it mostly for packages and some wood working (I showed him a wooden swiss army knife I was carving a design into) and he let me keep it.

My current edc knife! Bought it while working in a wood shop and it performs great for what I need. Lot of scraping, bit of prying (gasp) and tip cuts. Now looking for a more do it all option as work changes but I’ve got a soft spot for this little guy

Happy you brought up blade steel, I'm currently worried that so many are asking for "better and better blade steels just to say they have better blade steel and not realizing thats a huge increase in the price of knives from 4 years ago to today. I see it as we are confusing the knife companies in what we want.

Yep. And how many of those people wanting harder steels actually use them *so often* that re-sharpening becomes a chore? Very few I'd say. They simply prefer the idea of a better quality steel (and that's OK) but they don't get much benefit from it. So for most knife buyers, a premium steel just means they will pay more for the knife. Another thing is that less-hard steels are far easier, and quicker, to re-sharpen. Aside from the blade-steel, the build-quality of the Kiridashi is excellent.

Great presentation! I carry a Home Depot knife ($10.00) around the house doing projects. Tango blade (ugly) but comes in handy more times than not. It’s replaceable and the wife won’t mind the cost....some higher end knives make her shudder. lol Thanks for showing the knife snobs that there are more to think about than status!

I hate steel snob-ism. For an average consumer you need 3 things: Easy to sharpen, Not prone to rust and not fragile. A dull knife always better than a broken one.

Damn. You said exactly what I've been thinking. All these cupcakes so snobby about so many things that are so insignificant. I carry a knife for 2 reasons. 1 self defense and 2 randomly cut things. For either one of these, to be totally honest any damn gas station knife will work. Is it sharp? Does it open? It will work just fine. When I was younger (54 now) I didn't even know there were different steels for knives. Who would have thought. Buck knives were the thing then. They looked so tough. Who knows what they were made of. I know some guys still have their original bucks. Whatever steel it is sure did last a long time. I think most of these guys that carry edc have jobs where they don't get their hands dirty. It's almost become an accessory like women and their handbags. If you have a benchmade or whatever then you've got status. God forbid you actually have to use it. We live in a new world with soft as shit men. Our Grandfather's would be so disappointed. Thanks for listening to me ramble

This ain’t a garbage knife. Back when Buck wasn’t keeping its eye on the ball, THOSE were garbage knives. Home Depot etc sell garbage knives. Truck stops. This Cold Steel has good tolerances and a rock solid lockup. Only the steel is a formula taken for granted, but it comes from a reliable consistent mill, Krupp Thyssen.

I Like Cold Steels 4116 Krupp steel , I bought a few of their Light series fixed blades a few years back for around $25 and they are still going strong , it's super easy to sharpen , really Stainless and takes a wicked fine edge , whats not to like ....👍🖖

I like the unique styling, and use it for around the house light duties. I enjoy sharpening so I don’t care about the steel for this usage. I had to make my own clip from kydex so I can left pocket carry, but we lefties are used to adapting/overcoming, so no big deal. If CS would make a version with AUS10 or better and reversible clip I would definitely EDC.

I have been carrying one for about 10 months, the action was pretty gritty when I first got it, but it smoothed out after a week or so of use. Using the thumb stud to open it isn't the fastest but it gets the job done. I bought it because I like the shape of the blade, I use it for cutting the plastic wrap off of pallets in a factory, opening cardboard boxes, and mail more than anything else. Its light and the pocket clip holds onto my pocket good as I climb up and down and drive a forktruck. Its a cheap useable pocketknife that I wont cry to hard about if it gets lost.

Update, I have been carrying this every day for almost 2 years now, it has been great for what I use it for, holds an edge pretty decent I touch it up with a ceramic rod every week or so. But the bad news is I broke the plastic pocket clip today, I will be finding out how good their warranty dept. is....

I just got off the phone with their warranty dept. and they don't carry replacement clips and dont warranty anything other than the blade, which I am sure they would tell you anything that was wrong with the blade would be due to misuse or wear and tear. Total bullshit warranty...

I love this knife. Perhaps steel isn't top-drawer but the build-quality and ergonomics are, IMO. The CS made-in-Taiwan knives are really well constructed: rock solid. I *love* being able to get something sharp quite easily (when you work out how) and without it taking an age.

Just like every kitchen has a junk drawer, every guy needs a junk knife or 2. My junk drawer junk knife is a Kershaw 3/4 ton. Staple removal, root in the dirt removal, or even some taboo prying, it gets it done without me freaking out. Good points all that you make. Love CS knives, too, and gift them to friend's kids who can be rough on 'em.

Thank you for this excellent video. I am very intrigued by the form factor and blade shape of this knife. I don't get too hung up on premium blade steels, but I would sure love to see this in at least 440C, 8CR13MoV, or Aus-8. There are so many decent knives in this price range or just a few dollars more that I can't quite pull the trigger on something like this. Make it $15 and I'm in. 😉

Yeah.. the Kiridashi is a great box cutter, and slicer.. but a good stock would help. Cold steel hasn't updated steel's in a while. They'd make a killing if they would use sandvik. It takes a keen edge and seems tough

The trick with Cold Steel is that they roll out their new knives at a much higher price than they tend to sell a year later. The materials reflect the price once it settles down, for the inflated roll out price it should be 8Cr13 of AUS8, but at $21 4034 makes up in corrosion resistance and stain resistance what it gives up in edge retention. Also I’ve got to be honest, if it came sharper the edge would be useful a lot longer. Kershaws and Byrd have been arriving a lot sharper. When I have my 4116 blades sharpened professionally there are no edge retention issues compared to 8Cr13.

Really good CS Minis that I have and can really recommend to you are AK-47 Mini, American Lawman Mini, Recon 1 Mini all black (the newer ones have problems), Counter Point 2, Hold Out III, CSs first Mini folder, El Lobo Vaquero and the Medium Voyagers.

No, not just the steel. Back in the day (very early 1990s) when polymer handles first were introduced in large quantities to the Public, companies realized they could save money but coming up with integral molded clips. Well, being polymer instead of stainless steel meant the clips had no "give" to them. Snagged on a seat-belt, your integral polymer clip; broke! No way to fix it. Issue was particularly bad on Spyderco Delica, and Endura models. Along with the (back then) newly released and very popular Cold Steel Voyager models. So, not as though C.S. has no clue that such clips are useless. No clue why C.S. decided to go backwards in knife carry-clip evolution. Was very interested in this knife. But that clip was the deal-breaker. Had that issue back in the day. No thank you!

I bought it because it was so cheap and it look like the blade safe it would be hellaciously easy to get shart I kind of rounded off one of the edges on backside of the blade so that's why I thought it was not staying sharp but for the money I still like the knife.

@gideonstactical - Agreed, 4116/4034 are low-end budget steels, but I wonder if your Kiridashi had a bad heat treat? I went back and watched your 2019 video of the Outdoorsman Lite in 4034, and you seemed to have better luck (you said the peformance was very similar to 12C27). But I disagree when somebody uses the word "garbage" steel re: these types of steels. Yes, they are low budget steels, but as long you know what you are getting into and the trade-offs, they are fine. Highly rust resistant and easy to resharpen, and inexpensive...great for throwing in emergency bags when you have multiple vehicles, etc. (Or when a non-knife enthusiast wants to borrow your knife...you give them that one to use instead of your nice EDC.) To me a "garbage" steel is what you find on a gas station knife that is only surface treated, so as soon as you wear that initial edge down, you are into super soft steel and have no hope of getting a decent edge back on it, or break at the slightest use.

Bought this knife to see if I like she wharncliffe style and to learn how to sharpen freehand. I knew the metal was soft but this is ridiculously soft. It will barely strike a flint. I nicked the blade on a raised spot on a cheap diamond plate sharpener. It will definitely help me learn to sharpen

Absolutely love mine. Run it across a ceramic rod a couple times when it's getting dull and it's right back to a great edge. Steel types don't bother me since I can sharpen. It's a reason I don't really "avoid" any steels.

@2:30 Are you freaking kidding me?!? I just bought this for a very specific purpose and circumstance that requires it to be put it in my left side accessary pocket. I'm left handed and wear an apron which prevents me from accessing my front pockets easily, so without the clip it would be hard to access. Of all the CS knives I could have picked, I pick the only folder that isn't universal or reversable. Now I will have to send it back. Bummer. And no AUS8! It rusts like no other! Keep it stainless

CS goes with what they have available. The largest reason they switched from CTS to S35 is because CTS couldn't match their production. 4116, alloy wise has more going for it, but both steels the later and 4034 are in the same class as 420. The biggest game changer being 420hc has vanadium in it, making it harder wearing.

You mean I can't baton with this thing? It's sturdy enough and works well for it's intended purpose - light EDC. I can confirm the steel is on the soft end and is easy to get VERY sharp. For doing a few cuts throughout the day this is fine. The serrated Tuff Lite is my go to for a short blade.

Independent review- I found the Holy Grail of Budget flippers. Doom Blade. It goes for between $16 and $18 on Ebay. D2 steel, ball bearing flipper with G10 scales. Buttery smooth action. I bought two so far. This is a true hidden gem. I think people are turned off by the cheesy name but the knife is very good quality at an unbelievable price. I'm not paid or affiliated in any way. If you're looking for a EDC affordable beater for cheap, look no further than Doom Blade.

I got this knife for the same price,too and use it at work for utility cutting, and your right it does not hold an edge long,and 4034 is not that great.. Too bad it wasnt aus-10 which would be light years ahead of 4034.Just glad i got it as cheap as possible.

This knife sits in the key basket in the foyer. I use it to open boxes and mail. No way I'm using my good knives to open boxes and get sticky gunk on it. For the price, its an excellent knife. You're right though, after breaking down boxes it does get dull but after a couple of passes with a kitchen knife honing steel it comes back really sharp. Only problem using a honing rod is the tip gets rounded off.

lol i had one of those that i bought at the local corner store, it was some Chinese fixed blade in Persian fashion with wooden handles. The 35 dollar knife was causing me to use or wear my 350 dollar knives (I was a dumb kid, with good taste when i bought them) or any others that i have, so I gave it to my friend's kid. lol he thought it was the greatest thing ever!

Awesome and great question. I think the Dozier would be better over all. This is a cool interesting blade but the Dozier has more classic lines. Another model you could look at would be the Cold Steel Verdict i reviewed it recently.

If you HAD to choose between the Grik and Kiridashi which would you pick? I own the Grik based on your review of it, and it's great. I don't own the Kiridashi, and am not sure which one to buy for a friend who's not a real knife person but would definitely carry it around and use it, although I'm assuming not for hard tasks.

Check out a small recon 1. It's cheap, great design, and a variety of blades. Also a full range of quality in that series, I have an aus 8 and an s35vn one in the ordinary size. But I got a small/mini version for a friend, and she loved it.

Kiridashi these days are mostly used as marking knives for woodworking. Many times a chisel grind and forged out of one solid piece handle and all. More like a metal rod with widened sharpened point. I use them at work. The name speaks of the blade shape.

Hi Aaron. I have been edc'ing a Range Boss for almost a year with the same steel. I love my Range Boss but I do wish the steel was better , I would love sk5 or d2 but I still love the Range Boss and the steel still gets the job done. I also own the Broken Skull and several other CS with S35vn but continue to edc my Range Boss mostly Monday through Friday. In my opinion wanting a better steel doesn't make someone a steel snob especially if you love a design. Thanks P.S. if you're someone who hasn't tried the Range Boss only because of it's steel you are missing out on a great budget large edc knife that carries awesome. Thanks

Yeah, I really like my Range Boss too. Nice long lightweight blade. Check out the Ranch Boss if you want a similar blade style, but in SK5. Love that one too...comes with a beautiful leather belt sheath.

You had me at crappy steel. 420hc is a minimum for me. It's not a question of snobbery. More of needing knives I can depend upon. Budget Buck's use 420hc with a great heat treat. I have their Kingsman,a Canadian Tire only Buck. That is a neat sharpener. Do you ever rinse off the metal embedded in the surface of the rod? I find,with the finer stones at least,that it sharpens better when rinsed off periodically.

Gerber did recently come out with a budget knife in the $45-$50 range called the affinity with copper and D2 steel, and released a micarta and d2 flatiron for 55$ so they are moving that direction. I hope they drop a sumo in a better steel

I absolutely hate that 4034 steel that cs is using nowadays. I have the outdoorsman lite with this steel, and it's the only knife that I can't get a razor sharp edge on. Even using my worksharp precision adjust sharpener.

I got mine for 20 bucks on Amazon and for that price I ABSOLUTELY THINK ITS AMAZING AND THE BEST BANG FOR YOUR 20 BUCKS! Now for 30 bucks I wouldn't buy this knife. The steel takes a great edge, it works great for edc I work at home depot and cut open lots of boxes, and the plastic off of concrete pallets (lots of concrete powder covering the plastic) and honestly instead of stroping it when I get home just 10 times on the sharpmaker and I'm good to go for the next day.

Not everything else is good. Wait until that pocket clip breaks. They used non replaceable clips on the original voyager series. At least the structural breakage point is right where the pocket clip pins are...so it can be replaced.
