I love how you can pretty much tell how the review is gonna go just by looking at the timestamps around "Things I don't like" Also, I appreciate the mention of how it wasn't the first fully 3D fps... that fact gets swept under the carpet by a lot of people who should know better, and it does a disservice to a couple of my other favourite games :)

True. Bethesda definitely seems to have learned from the mistakes they made with the latest Doom ports, 'cause they seem to have resisted the temptation to make most of the same bizarre decisions I heard they were making there -- and they were a lot clearer in communicating what this was intended to be.
@mrbigglezworth423 жыл бұрын
Having played the original from Steam, the only thing I really wanted was the soundtrack that strangely doesn't play natively on said Steam version and I had to go elsewhere to make the game actually play said music. The Nightdive version still plays more or less the same but with no music issue, so that's nice of them.

The game is about as old as me, but I first played it in 2000s. I remember around 2005, with my outdated Pentium II 233 MHz, Quake was acquired for free as shareware, it is playable until the first episode ending: Chthon. The shareware game was widely known during the time where most people who owned PC were mostly dominated with Windows 98 as OS, but full version of it was not popular in my country.

I used to absolutely hate fps games. Im 17 so i only saw fps games as boring military games that are just slow monotonous multiplayer games, but then I found civvie and your channel, (specifically the what is a boomer shooter video) and was convinced to give doom 1 a shot. Best decision of my gaming life right there. I ended up during the summer steam sale buying a ton pf retro fps games. Dusk, Amid Evil, Ultrakill, Hrot, Nightmare Reaper, Ion fury, Wrath and Prodeus. I also got all the best old fps games. Apogee throwback pack, Return to castle wolfenstien, heretic , Hexen 1 and 2, Turok 1 and 2, and quake 1-3. I bought the game on Steam sometime back, and was very pleasantly surprised at being given the remaster for free. Other publishers would have simply charged you for it. Multiplayer was a blast. Chaotic and can get laggy, but that's always been the case or Quake online. Quake was the first game I had put serious time playing deathmatch, and playing the remaster, it felt like reliving my childhood again (yes, I played this game as a kid lol). The game does have some technical issues, but they seem easily fixable, so I'm overall very happy with the remaster. Sadly, on the Steam forums at least, there's a lot of hate towards the remaster. Some hardcore purists are claiming movement isn't exactly the same as the original, and the changes to Nightmare means they can't simply rocket jump around for speed runs anymore. Some people are also calling the remaster 'not Quake' because the base game is wrapped around Nightdive's KEX Engine despite the game being demo perfect. Then there's some people stoking up groundless fears that an official remaster means Bethesda is going to clamp down on source ports and make the game closed source. They're extremely vocal in shutting down any reasonable discourse in the Steam forums and aren't backing down until the remaster is removed outright.

I played this when originally released. Few of my friends had PCs capable of running it but I got numerous people hooked, that turned into regular sleepover LAN parties at friends houses, even staying behind school because they had a huge network of PCs that very few school had in such numbers. Many a school hour when we should have been doing work was spent playing Quake. I spent hours playing massive amounts of expanded user created content, quake really blew the modding scene wide open. I even made modded some mods to create my own cocktail of mods. Quake was a game in its own right, but so much more. And this remaster is excellent. I hope other mods reach this new version, but my hats off to the devs who have very carefully and respectful bought one of the best video games ever created to a new audience. Man you were pretty intense in this review. Not in your narrating tone, but definitely in writing (You even used some creative naughty words there). You still did good but that first half of the video wasn't your characteristic joyful self. That new episode does look like a breath of fresh air though, makes me want to play it. Most of the games you review make me want to try them at least. Thanks for the entertaining video.

I've run into the game loading bug too! I thought I was doing something wrong.

I was introduced as a little kid to Quake II on the N64. Man the memories. But when this game was announced I was like "yeah I've never seen Quake I. I'm down" Now up to the final stage on normal in my first ever blind playthrough with the Witch mother or something and I'm having loads of fun with this on my Xbox Series X. Despite how hard it is it just has a way of making you want to keep going. I've never played a challenging game that's so addictive. What great value for 15 dollars.

This was a fantastic expose' on one of the most beloved PC games of all time! I've played the original Quake on and off since running it on my Pentium 1 PC with a 3DFX Voodoo2 card.. This is one of my top played games of all time along with the original Doom games and the two Half-Life titties. You're an excellent wordsmith in the way you talk about this game and I honestly can't imagine a better script than this.

Very excellent and thorough video as always. Really loved this remaster and especially the new missions. Great to see you calling out the falling weapon model bug - it's very noticeable and distracting!

I'm just wondering how far they could push the graphics, to make Quake as good as Doom 2016. And what about Quake 2?

Happy to note, that I've been playing through the original game, and first two expansions so far, and I don't think I've run into any of the bugs you've listed so far. And for the couple of months I've had it on my PC's it's been getting nearly weekly updates. Last one I saw was some tweaks for online play and maps.

Well I never played Quake back in the day because I thought it was a step down from Doom, but I just finished it on Nightmare using a controller and I have to say that it still holds up pretty well and it's amazingly playable.

Now the question is, could Quake make the trip to VR? Do we think VR will get good enough for a fast paced FPS like it?

I definitely get the sense that MachineGames took influence from Arcane Dimensions with the way they built the new episode. ...I loved it so much, I'm working on a little mod for it now... we'll see how that goes :)

I have the PS4 version and man does it run smoothly as hell. NightDive is the king of remasters and Id software is the undisputed king of FPS games. It’s definitely a 5/5.

One big gripe i have with remaster:you cant rebind weapons. You either have to resort to wheel or numbers, both are not great.Or you can rebind it in config files, but i feel that should be made in menu.

But how does the revamp of Quake compare to add-ons like Dark Places, which essentially added nearly all of the same effects and lighting that this revamp adds? I've been playing enhanced Quake with Dark Places for years, and it's been awesome.

Even though I cut my FPS teeth with games such as Doom II and Rise of the Triad, this game is so nostalgic of my PC gaming of the late 90's. at 16, I had Quake for Christmas 1996, along with Duke 3D and Tomb Raider. I must admit it was not until 6 months later when I upgraded my graphic card that I played and was hooked. I was even more addicted to making levels for it. This game was the true pioneering FPS game that all others have followed and other games are graphically superior, they never had the same addictiveness. Every few years, I find myself playing Quake and have to resist the urge to do level editing (too time consuming now and I have family responsibilities). I will always have a fondness for this game.

How can you say that the new maps show off what the Quake engine is capable of, if they only work in the new port used for the remastered version? Probably in time, some of the source ports may add support for them, but as far as I can see, they were designed to take advantage of features in the new port that don't exist either in the original Quake or any of the source ports. That's like loading a Doom level with 3D models, dynamic colored lighting, lens flares and particle effects and saying that it shows what the Doom engine was capable of.

I was born in 1992 and played this on release when I was 5. The Ogre’s grenades and Fiend’s growls are some of the most formative sounds in my brain lol. Also the original ogre model is better.

When I played that game that first time, it was at 320x240, yea, the typical PC in 1996 was not really up to the task lol

In my opinion it ran surprisingly well on a Pentium 120 MHz, even without a good 3D card such as the VooDoo Banshee.

I actually used the weapon wheel quite extensively when I played the remaster. It's such a great thing to have for those weapons that are further in the numbers section of the keyboard and I don't have to stretch to quick select.

Great video man. I did the same got it for my Xbox even though I could play it free on game pass and bought it for my Switch I have all doom games on both may as well have Quake too. All we need is Blood fresh supply and Shadow Warrior to come to consoles and we’ll have the build engine holy trinity. Everyone who has a Switch and likes doom and quake, NightDive studios also remade Strife, it’s an excellent 90s FPS/light rpg on the doom engine.
