If you think that's nice then you can't really call yourself a fan. This wasn't a remaster, it was a replacement.
It has its quirks and bugs, but it really is black wizardry. They built it on the Kex Engine like Nightdive does with all their remasters, but it's still able to play online with old Netquake and Quakeworld servers, and while it doesn't support all mods for one reason or another it supports enough. It's straight up a rebuild of the game while trying to make it as accurate as possible.

I've still yet to sit down and finish the new mission pack but so far I think my favorite level has to be the last map from the Realm of the Blacksmiths, and this is one of the reasons why. In the level prior I knew I recognized an ambient machine sound effect from Quake 2, which initially I thought was nothing more than asset reuse. It's not uncommon among developers, Id has done it before, I figured Machine Games just needed a sound effect to use so they dug around Quake 2's sound library for something. As I played through the last level of the realm I grew increasingly amazed because as you progress, more and more assets from Quake 2 get used. Textures, sound effects, there are even entire rooms that look like they were ripped straight out of Quake 2. Now the reason why I say I was amazed is because it wasn't done to be lazy it was done intentionally. It better connects Quake 1 to Quake 2 by suggesting that Shub-Niggurath's army from Quake 1 eventually became what was known as the Strogg in Quake 2, which is a pet theory I've had for years. All of this new technology is stuff being made and secured by the Quake 1 monsters - they're creating it in that factory. Also at the end of the level you get a paragraph explaining- "There will be many future wars over this realm for quite some time." in reference to the wars against the Strogg in Quake 2 and Quake 4.

I remember playing Quake well before I hit puberty and it taught me things, such as puzzle solving and if it hurts me, I hurt it back. But for my elementary brain this game was above what I was capable of achieving since some levels required remembering what you saw and to keep a mental track of where you were. It was semi linear at the time, giving that there were some optional exits to secret levels, adding to the time spent playing a chapter. I wouldn't beat this game for several years, not in a legit way though. I find it interesting that even years later I'm still playing this game despite playing hundreds over the years. It's almost like I keep coming back to what makes me happy.

I think it’s fair to say that the id games re-releases have turned a complete 180 since the launch of the first original two Doom games. Not only are those *significantly* better with more options to keep the games the same or to enhance them, (As well as no online BS required for what’s downloaded and the base games anymore thank God) but they all come with extra content too. Doom and Doom II have officially supported mods by independent creators, Doom 64 has extra levels to tie the canon of the original classic games with Doom 2016, and Quake not only has a new expansion as well, but support for more user made mods in the future as well, including online and co-op multiplayer for pretty much everything, and not just death matches and tiny character color customizations. They even give you the option to play Quake like you could on the N64, they really didn’t have to do that! And all of this and more is at launch for $10. *TEN DOLLARS.* And assuming that it goes on sale occasionally like all the other Doom games before 2016 do, especially since Doom 3 is also $10, it can get to half off for $5 if we’re lucky. I don’t think that’s gonna happen until like a year or two after this is released, but still, either way it’s an *insanely* good deal! Even at $10, what you need to pay for is pretty much nothing considering all of the improvements and extras you get, *especially* for console players though on systems like the Switch. Quake and the original Doom games now are like a godsend. This is the type of quality and price that most other remasters *should* be! (Not to be confused with full on remakes by the way, those should follow the principles of the Crash and Spyro trilogies instead) And I like how it was basically just shadow dropped too, as if nothing special is there, even though it absolutely is. Obviously it’s not 100% perfect, but for launch, it’s damn near close to it. Adding in optional stuff like improved models and aliasing just to name a few didn’t even need to be there, but nope, they went all in, and that’s why I love it so much. Really my only genuine complaint now is that you need to pay for stuff like NSO just to play the online modes, but that’s not Quake’s fault at all, and the fact that (At least at the moment) you can’t seem to turn on and off the CRT effect for Quake and Quake 64 respectively, but that’s more of a nitpick. Other than that though, it’s pretty much flawless. There’s even cross-platform with other console and PC players, so that’s not an issue either. Having mod support would be nice since there isn’t any mods yet besides Quake 64, but I’m sure that will change pretty soon. So yeah, there’s no doubt in my mind that *this* is what the definitive standard of remakes should be. Stuff like Super Mario 3D All-Stars doesn’t even come *close.* (Although to be fair, that’s to be expected since Nintendo has always done some shitty stuff ever since they first rose to prominence. And yet people defend them as white knights for some reason, despite being a multi billion dollar company like Disney? Whatever man, I don’t fucking care…) I just wish more remakes in general would actually rise up to the occasion such as this. Don’t get me wrong, as much as I love games like RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 and Jedi Academy, those games are jus re-releases, not remakes. Great to have since they’re on modern consoles, but still not remakes. *This* though, is a remake, 100%. I don’t care what people try to say in regards to sucking other largely incompetent companies dicks such as Nintendo, we should always get better things than what we would expect, and not the same to expectations or less, *fight me.*

The trick to playing Quake on Nightmare is just to be aware of the numbers involved, picking up a medical crate that gives you 25 health makes _zero_ sense when you only lost 5 health in the last encounter. The same goes for ammunition, some boxes only give 20 shells while others give 40, maybe avoid the 40's if you only need 10 to max out. This is especially true with energy cell ammo, some enemies drop cells that you can pick up despite being maxed out on cells which should be avoided at all costs.

What i get they did on the realm of the stonemasons is the captain crunch of "ooooOOOOPS Its All Shamblers" it should renamed into "Shambling Realm of stonemasons" its probably me but i feel the aim a bit funny... again its probably me.

This expansion is beautiful, but why is there only 5 episodes when there's an unused portal? Was there going to add another episode?

I haven't played Quake since the late 90s, mainly since idk where our copy went. And honestly, the look of the game wasn't my favorite either. Idk, I just don't care for the more Lovecraftian look. But this remaster really makes me want to try it out again. The new episode looks really cool too. Those maps in the Blacksmith and Cultist areas look really awesome. Nothing like the original maps I remember. Gonna have to pick this up! I was leaning toward doing that, but seeing the new maps in this vid has helped big time.

Do you happen to know; off by hand if they fixed backpedaling? Walking backwards for some baffling reason is reduced to half your top movement speed. It made getting away from Some enemies a bit more annoying when they closed the distance
@pokeshark3 жыл бұрын
just type cl_backspeed 400 in console to restore the original speed.
@Fiendzy3 жыл бұрын
@@pokeshark I reckon I should make a bind for that? appreciate the command I would have looked up the CVAR eventually :p
@lampenpam3 жыл бұрын
@@Fiendzy no need for a bind. The command does not reset when you restart the game. On the Steam forum people also mentioned to double the value of cl_sidespeed to make the movement feel just as it was in the vanilla game

just finished playing through it all and came to watch your take on it, not sure what happened with your playthrough at the ream of the stonemasons because I had enough resources to not have to worry about the ending section much, not sure what happened in your playthough but it looked a lot more painful then what I personally experienced
