About Every Four Months The Floor Of Kirkcudbright Harbour Is Cleaned Of The Build Up Of Silt That Accumulates. It Is Pushed In To The Middle Of The River And Is Carried Away With The Outgoing Tide. Years Ago It Used To Be Laboriously Hosed Away. Now Modern Machinery And Experienced Operators Make Light Work Of The Job.

Good to see this operation on video. The job is often completed over three tides. It is 22 feet from the dock bottom ( sill) to the top of the quay. That will give viewers an insight into how large tides can be when they flood up into the car park on occasions. Thanks Sam.

I've just stumbled on this video by accident, the last time I was in Kirkcudbright was around this time in 2004/2005 as a lorry driver, I was collecting from the creamery for a load to Devon... I can remember on the road in was a small house which looked like an old toll road house and was covered in lights for the Christmas period, it looked lovely I remember! I've just looked on google earth and it looks like the creamery is closed down now? I can remember driving across a bridge before turning into the factory..

I’m guessing a bulldozer would a) not fit on the moat brae, b) would not be able to spread the silt, just pile it up and c) would need to run the risk of entering the water more? However I’m a bit surprised the JCB’s don’t have longer arms as used for drainage work to enable them to put the silt further into the channel.

Those who think a dozer would be better need to watch closely at how the mud behaves around the buckets -- it flows and oozes so pushing with a blade would lose most of the load off the ends. Also notice how they drop the load further out in the current so it will get washed away.

The whole problem with dozers is they will stir up the mud and lose traction, making for a bigger mess. Also the room for two to maneuver isn't available. The slope would also make it hard for them to work.

As the tide is OUT when they start will that not simply mean that on the next high tide most of what has been moved simply be returned to the dockside? Think the comment about long armed diggers seems sensible and would mean the job only having to be done on fewer occasions. Seems a pretty expensive a laborious task to be done over 4 months!!

Wouldn't it be cheaper to move Kirkcudbright just a little further up river.? 😊 I used to shoot rabbits on the other side of the bank as a lad with my mate John Swan . Around '64 i seem to remember.

Wood mats would work but the time to set them and pick them up before Tide returns would mitigate the work time Advantage...

bill martin Bill it was a public display of squandering money , I have grappled with a reason as to how this could possibly be anything but a show of moving a pile of mud from the low water mark to the middle of a channel, only to have the next high tide bring the now stirred up mud back to aforementioned low water mark.

@Dustin Cooper. Yes, but 1 decent bulldozer costs considerably more than those 2 machines put together - and we all know how the Scots like to watch their purses.
