Over the weekend of the 14th & 15th September, a storm was brewing on the Kirklees Light Railway. On the Sunday, quite literally, though fortunately the Saturday saw a much better forecast.
The "Storm" gala was so called due to the weather related names in the line's two visiting engines, 4-6-2 No.7 "Typhoon" from the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway, and 2-6-2T No.8 "Thunder" from the Bure Valley Railway (both carrying A4 chime whistles). Also visiting was one of the RH&DR's permanent way diesel fleet, PW3 "Redgauntlet".
All four of the KLR's steam locomotives, and two internal combustion locos were in operation.
Our first shot is of "Thunder" running towards the turntable at Clayton West having just arrived on a passenger train. Meanwhile "Typhoon", coupled onto the other end of the train, prepares for departure towards Shelley.
The railway's resident saddle tank loco, 0-6-4ST "Badger" moves forwards, and waits to take charge of the next incoming train from Shelley. "Thunder" on the other hand is seen resting outside the shed alongside "Jay", one of the KLR's diesel locomotives. (Apologies with the slight wonk that my camera was on in that shot).
PW3 "Redgauntlet" now arrives on the Skelmanthorpe shuttle, before being turned, and receiving attention with a new horn being fitted.
Heisler 0-4-4-0GT "Owl" then drifts into the station on the next train from Shelley, we will board this train for the full journey, once "Badger" has coupled onto the opposite end.
From out of the second carriage, we see the loco departing from Clayton West, before approaching Skelmanthorpe, where we pass KLR 2-6-2T "Fox" heading the opposite way.
The loco then passes through Shelley Woodhouse Tunnel, before approaching Shelley along the embankment.
At Shelley, No.7 "Typhoon" takes charge again , and is seen departing towards Clayton West. It is shortly followed by Tram No.7 "Toby" with a mixed shuttle train towards the mouth of the tunnel, with Kitson-Meyer 0-4-4-0T "Hawk" on the rear.
Immediately behind is "Badger", who stops to take on water, before running to the turntable, to be swithched to the far platform.
