Whenever I listen to K.F. and especially under the baton of F.W., I think I am in Valhalla. Thank you so much, dear friend.

The final scene of the opera is known as Brünnhilde's Immolation Scene and it is one of Wagner's greatest achievements. Having seen Siegfried killed, Brünnhilde orders a funeral pyre to be made by the Rhine river, so that she can take her own life in it. Carrying the ring, she tells the Rhinemaidens to claim it from her once the fire has removed its curse. Brünnhilde rides her horse Grane into the flames, Valhalla and the Gods are consumed by fire, and the ring's gold is returned to the river. This recording with Wilhelm Fürtwangler is unsurpassed, even though she is past her prime. Flagstad made her operatic debut at the National Theatre, as Nuri in Eugen d'Albert's Tiefland in 1913. Her first recordings were made between 1913 and 1915. Flagstad sang many roles, especially in the early part of her career, before she became famous as a Wagnerian dramatic soprano. She sang Verdi, Puccini, Purcell, Gluck, Handel (Rodelinda).

Thank you for the posting! Just a small correction in the description, this performance is from May 22, 1950 (same with the Liebestod). There was a live Ring cycle at Covent Garden in June but this is not it.
