#7. Turn your reference photo upside down when doing your initial sketch & draw it that way. It'll force your brain to think "that line goes in this direction & this line goes that way" instead of "the mouth looks like this". Btw, love you Kirsty

I've learned a lot of what you've said in art class back in the 90's but then career kept me busy until I retired. So now I have time to draw and your videos are a refresher course for me. Although I studied art in primary school, I did not study further in university. One of my art teachers, back in the 7th-8th grade (12-13 years old), would correct me and mark me down for NOT using dark lines on the edges and not starting with and maintaining very dark shadows. I tried, it was wrong. It wasn’t until the final weeks of portrait art that she came up behind me when the piece was almost complete. This was a graphite sketch, btw. Or charcoal, remembering her shading. The sketch was very realistic and looked just like the model and she allowed that maybe the only way I knew how to do a decent sketch might actually work. Good thing as I could never get the feel for her technique. I did try because I desperately wanted to get better. But drawing outlines always made it look unnatural and more like a coloring book page. Ahh well

They are all so helpful. And the last is so damn true. The more longer you look at your drawing, you start noticing more mistakes and details. Correcting your mistakes actually works is making artwork much better than it was before.

Honestly I love drawing but I’m feeling super unmotivated recently, it feels like I’m never doing enough and I beat myself up (not literally lmao) when I do a mistake in my sketch or something like that and it makes me feel like the drawing is terrible and I never want to complete it and that’s been really affecting my confidence

Good point on making the shadows darker. As a beginner I too was guilty of doing this all the time. I simply wouldn’t go dark enough.... little did I know this makes a huge difference on the outcome of your drawings. These were all great tips by the way!! 👍

In recent months of lock down, I've been improving my art, and in nearly 3 to 4 months I have improved my accuracy in drawing, so much .Besides all these, I've been watching your and other artists' videos too. Thank you Kirsty - I'm stuck on doing trees and grass as a finish on the background of an antique car that is sitting in a field. I'm no artist but started this picture years ago after taking a class on/with colored pencils - now the years have flown and decided to finish some things up - this being one of the ufo's ! Thanks goodness I kept all the directions etc altho did have to buy another set of colored pencils. And so I've been watching your videos to see if I can jog the old brain - hahahaa Thanks again and the shading part of the six is the most helpful to me.
