hii kirsty. i'm considering buying pastel pencil, cut carbothello weren't available in my county and pitt pastel somehow super expensive and almost the same price as caran d'ache. i watch a few comparison video and derwent seems bad compared to the other, is it that bad? because derwent pastel pencil in here were a bit more affordable and can you make a comparison video and pro and con about it especially derwent ones :D
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt4 жыл бұрын
There isn't anything wrong with the Derwent ones (in my opinion) I feel like the Carbothello/Pitt Pastel are a little bit creamier, but I still use the Derwent ones sometimes! Honestly, if that's what is available to you, it's not a bad option and you can still achieve all the same results with them 😊 One day I will do a comparison! It's on my (very long) list 😊

Hi Kirsty, I just discovered you and I'm so happy! I've been painting landscapesin acrylics for so long now but really want to get back into my first love, which is drawing. But not just graphite, I'd miss the color too much. So I am in an art group and saw a pastel pencil drawing a lady did and it was so realistic! I thought, THIS is what I should be doing! I'm going to join your patreon so I can get deeply into this. One question, why did you choose to use the pan pastels on this instead of pencil? Do you find yourself using pan if the picture is going to be larger? Just curious. It's amazing and can't wait to see what I can learn from you. Thanks, Shelley M.

Thank you, I'm glad you are getting back into drawing again! 😊 I hope you find the Patreon tutorials helpful! Pan Pastels are much quicker to lay down larger areas, but they also allow for a smoother result, much more quickly as well And because it's quite easy to blend them together while you're layering more colours, it really suits portraiture/skin quite well! Although, I have done a lot of projects entirely in pastel pencils (including portraits) so sometimes it's just whatever I feel like doing haha Both methods work out well in the end anyway 😊

Hi Kirsty, I really like your tutorials and they have encouraged me to buy panpastels. The medium I usually use is colored pencil and I'm planning on using those on top of a panpastel layer. I was wondering, do you use a fixative spray in between your layers of pastel? Do you recommend I do so if I intend to render details with colored pencil?
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt3 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you like the tutorials 😊 I personally like using the Luxarchival sanded paper for coloured pencil over Pan Pastel because it seems to take the coloured pencil quite well, even after a layer of pastel Some people like using Clairefontaine Pastelmat, however, I couldn't get as many layers of coloured pencil as I would have liked over the Pans on this paper It's not necessary to use a fixative over your Pan Pastel layer (especially on Luxarchival - I don't use fixative) but if you feel like you need to use one, I'd recommend the Spectrafix because it doesn't alter the colours as much as most other fixatives I would also recommend only using it during the process, not at the end. Sometimes fixatives can splatter/alter colours so you will want to use it early on in your piece so you can fix any issues it may have caused with further layers Hope that helps!

@KirstyRebeccaFineArt Жыл бұрын
It depends on what medium you're using it for! I believe I have used the heavyweight paper for graphite in the past, but if you're using pastels, I only recommend Clairefontaine Pastelmat - there's nothing else like it, unfortunately! 😊

As always you're the best. I wanna buy pastel pencil (cause you've tempted me to) but I don't know which set to buy. I don't wanna waste my money on the 60 set. So can you recommend me which one should I get as I am a beginner???? Even if I bought the 12 set would I be able to create a decent portrait?
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt4 жыл бұрын
I always recommend to get the biggest set you can afford (because it is easier with more colours) However, if you buy a 12 set, you can still mix/layer colours to create the colours you need, and it will actually help you, especially as a beginner, to be able to learn a bit of colour theory which will help so much in the long run! You can always start with a smaller set, then if you find you need certain colours quite often, then you can buy individual pencils to build up your set over time 😊

@@KirstyRebeccaFineArt wow that is truly helpful. I'll soon buy a set I can afford and follow your work. Love all your videos. Thank you so much kirsty. You're such an angel. ❤️

I really enjoy watching your tutorials and you are an excellent teacher. I have applied some of your tips to my own artwork. I do wish, however, that you would do more real-time videos for people like myself that are retired and can't pay for Patreon tutorials. Obviously, art is your career, and you deserve some form of payment, but there are some in my position that just can't afford to do that.
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jennifer, I do have a couple of real-time tutorials and as much as I'd love to give everything away for free.... Honestly, creating KZbin videos (and Patreon) requires expensive equipment, a lot of time, behind the scenes things like marketing, customer service, social media, not to mention the years of trial & error, learning and practice to be in a position where I can offer longer tutorials on Patreon I do offer my best information for free in my KZbin videos, but I need to charge for my longer tutorials (which starts at a very low $4 per month) so I can continue to make these free KZbin tutorials as well 😊 I hope that one day when I can create tutorials full-time (without having to work a day job) I may be able to offer more real-time tutorials for free, but right now it's just not financially viable for me to offer all of my tutorials for free because I work 80+ hours some weeks between my day job, KZbin, and Patreon I hope you can understand, and enjoy the free KZbin tutorials in the mean-time! 😊

@@KirstyRebeccaFineArt I completely understand, Kirsty, and thank you for explaining that. I am a retired teacher and I know how much time and effort and cost goes into teaching students. I love your teaching and your ideas. I'm getting your 20 pan pastel set from an Australian company for my birthday from my sons. Like you, our businesses need support here as well, so they have ordered the set from here. I am very glad I found your videos and will continue to watch them enthusiastically. You have an amazing gift for realism, light and shadow values and it is very much like the sort of art I prefer as well.

Why the second layer with pencil, and not with pan pastels?
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt4 жыл бұрын
It's up to you if you want to do a second layer with Pan Pastels, but in this case I decided to use pencils because they are a bit smaller so I could alter where the colour shifts where a little easier! 😊
