I am absolutely blown away brave at the simplicity you use to create your wonderfully true to absolute life skin tone colours. Certainly , even in New Zealand you can buy single Caran D’Ashe pencils from pastels down to coloured pencils. From a young age I’ve been drawn to pastels though we didn’t have the toothed paper back then s9 I frequently mixed my media’s to get the effect I could see in my mind’s eyes and to get what I wanted. Now it’s different. It’s VERY exciting actually. Thank you so very much Margot New Zealand

Aww, thanks Margot, I like a limited palette as it makes thing nice and straight forward and it creates beautiful colour harmonies too. Paper plays a very important part... when I started back in the day there was no sanded surface tooth so the paper that was available created a lot of dust, with pastelmat it is like zero dust and it is magic to work on. Excellent, but what finish can be used(like a fixative for ordinary pencils),is there something like a transparent finish, that gets hard and protects them?Bc pastel is pretty fragile and 'catches' a lot of dust,hair etc.I am talking about soft,oil pastel, like i use.
@DavePortersArt11 ай бұрын

Just amazing brother. One question : when you feel like your finished with the detail stage would you say that all the little grey holes of the pastelmat are gone ? Sometimes i keep going until all the paper is covered and sometimes that looks plastic
@DavePortersArt Жыл бұрын
Hi Dave, because I work in layers, the grey colour of the pastelmat acts as a desaturation for colours in some of the midtone and the shadow areas. All the pastelmat is covered... there is more pigment in some areas than others. The reason it might look plastic is that the tooth of the pastel mat has gone... I always leave enough tooth for the subtle details to grab on to. All the very best 🙏
