1:52 A lot cheaper alternative is K1000 or K1200 hardwarestore sandpaper 23 x 28 cm: for color pencil it is even more joy to use. They are excellent for learning and practicing the techniques, before consuming expensive Pastelmat.
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt Жыл бұрын
Yes, you can definitely practice on hardware store sandpaper however, keep in mind that anything you do on sandpaper will not be archival It makes sense to practice on sandpaper but when you switch to Pastelmatt it can be a little bit of a learning curve because it works differently than sandpaper (Pastelmat is a unique surface and it is not actually considered a standard paper so when you start using it, you may find that you need to re-learn some of the techniques) I wouldn't recommend using sandpaper for any artwork that you were planning on selling because it is not archival and could potentially flake off, discolour, or yellow you're at work over time 😊

Thanks Kirsty. A question for you, could you use a colourless blender pencil ie Derwents to smooth out the final layers instead of a grey? (-: Marion

I have a question re. Patreon sign up. If we join and follow along doing our own drawings using your refrence photo/outline are we allowed to sell our pieces? I know copyrights etc can be a hard place to navigate so i thought i would ask. If not its ok the hints and tips will help in any projects
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt4 жыл бұрын
You can sell your work that you made using the reference photos etc (I use reference photos from Pixabay/Unsplash which are both royalty free sites anyone can access) I do tend to change my artwork a fair amount from the original reference photo, so if you follow along with the tutorial exactly, it will probably look similar to mine You're welcome to sell it, but I would appreciate if you upload your work to social media that you mention you followed a "tutorial by Kirsty Rebecca" I'm not as picky as some other artist's who teach on Patreon about selling work created from tutorials, but crediting the teacher just a nice/respectful thing to do considering it wasn't completely your own idea, if that makes sense? 😊

Quick question. What is the best type of pencil to draw line art onto Pastelmat? I have purchased a projector to avoid messy transfer paper (that was fun setting up - NOT)! This morning I drew my outlines onto Pastelmat using a graphite pencil but I’m struggling to remove the outline down to a faint image (hope this makes sense). I’ve got a lot of it off using putty eraser but worried that pencil lines will show through when I add my coloured pencil.
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt4 жыл бұрын
If you have lightened them with a putty eraser, they should be covered up by your coloured pencil in the layering process (because Pastelmat does a great job at allowing many layers as well as lights over darks!) But if I use a projector, I usually use a lighter coloured pencil (also a colour that matches the project I'm working on) to draw my line with If I'm doing a pastel piece, I'll do the same thing with a pastel pencil If I were to use a projector for this piece, I would have chosen a light blue coloured pencil to do my lines with, that way they will blend in with the following layers anyway 😊 Hope that helps!

Sometimes if I can't find a supply in Australia (it can be really difficult here too), I use Jacksons who are based in the UK but they ship world-wide! Their prices are very good and they are often cheaper than the stores in Australia even with the cost of shipping, so you could try them 😊 If you're talking about paper to use with coloured pencil, then there are a few options you can use instead of Pastelmat (keep in mind that you will probably need to add many more layers of coloured pencil on any other paper to make it look as saturated and vibrant as it does on Pastelmat blended with solvent) These are some of the papers I use with coloured pencil (they are all Jacksons links) Fabriano artistico hot pressed watercolour paper www.jacksonsart.com/en-au/fabriano-artistico-block-9x12in-20-sheets-extra-white-hp?___store=jacksonsart_au&acc=07a96b1f61097ccb54be14d6a47439b0 Arches hot pressed watercolour paper www.jacksonsart.com/en-au/arches-aquarelle-gummed-watercolour-pad-a3-12-sheets-hot-pressed?___store=jacksonsart_au&acc=07a96b1f61097ccb54be14d6a47439b0 Canson Mi Teintes pastel drawing paper (NOT the touch/tex) - I use the reverse side which is smoother than the front www.jacksonsart.com/en-au/canson-mi-teintes-pastel-pad-32x41cm-30-sheets-grey-tones?___store=jacksonsart_au&acc=07a96b1f61097ccb54be14d6a47439b0 If you are referring to a paper for use with Pan Pastels or pastel pencils, the only paper I recommend is Clairefontaine Pastelmat because it is a very unique surface. You can get multiple layers of pastel with a smooth finish (there is nothing else that compares to it) www.jacksonsart.com/en-au/clairefontaine-pastelmat-pastel-paper-gummed-pads-360gsm-au?___store=jacksonsart_au&acc=07a96b1f61097ccb54be14d6a47439b0 If you are on a budget, I'd recommend saving money on your other supplies (like purchasing a small set of 5 Pan Pastels and learn to mix the colours instead of buying a large set) because the paper is the most important supply in my opinion This is the set of Pans I recommend if you are on a budget 😊 www.jacksonsart.com/en-au/panpastel-starter-set-painting-5-colours?___store=jacksonsart_au&acc=07a96b1f61097ccb54be14d6a47439b0 I hope that helps!

Also, when it comes to the coloured pencils themselves, my favourite brands are; Faber Castell polychromos Derwent Lightfast (either of the above two sets are perfect for beginners, depending on your budget) I also use the Derwent Drawing (they only come in a set of 24) and Caran D'ache Luminance There are other brands of coloured pencil such as prismacolor and Lyra polycolor that will work fairly well with my techniques but the colours are not very lightfast (meaning they could potentially fade/discolor/yellow over time - so I wouldn't recommend those cheaper options unless you are not planning on selling your work and aren't worried about the archival quality of your artwork) 😊

Great demonstration and explanation, but "realistically" wouldn't you use pastels for a piece like this (if you have the material)? I'm just wondering why you chose color pencil for this one...? Since it doesn't have a lot of detail. It came out beautiful either way!
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt4 жыл бұрын
I guess you could say that about any piece! I use pastels when I feel like I want to use pastels, and coloured pencils when I want to use Coloured pencils 😊 Sometimes I use different papers for coloured pencils, depending on how much detail I want to add/how much time I want to spend on it etc But I work in a lot of different mediums and would get bored if I just did everything with pastels (even though it is a bit easier/quicker sometimes!)
@oilonpaper4 жыл бұрын

You would use pastels yes. I don’t know why she used colored pencils. I mean, if you had colored pencils, the PastelMat wouldn’t be your choice of paper. It’s kind of strange not to use pastels on this particular paper but hey, whatever floats her boat 🤷♀️
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt4 жыл бұрын
@@coypu2005 I think you'll find that a lot of popular artists are using coloured pencil on Pastelmat and even more artists are catching on and trying it because of the many benefits I mention in this tutorial (mainly the number of layers you can get, the vibrancy, how fast it is, and the fact that you can layer light over dark - unlike most other options) Artists like Lachri Fine Art, Bonny Snowden, Animal Art By Law, Leontine van vliet and Cassandra Hanley amongst other names have all done tutorials on KZbin using this method, so it's becoming quite popular, and I'm definitely not the first person to use it in this way Although the paper is named "Pastelmat" doesn't mean you have to use it for pastels (although I also love it for pastels), just like the Fabriano or Arches watercolour paper is a popular choice for coloured pencil, even though it's technically a watercolour paper 😊

How does one transfer a drawing to pastelmat? I tried a light pad, it doesn’t work, pastelmat is too thick to see thru. I also tried transfer paper and found it’s very pale on th colored pastel amt. any suggestions to transfer a drawing to where it can be see easily?
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt3 жыл бұрын
I usually recommend rubbing some Pan Pastel (or pastel sticks) on the back of your outline/reference photo then place that on your Pastelmat (the right way up) and trace over the outline It kind of works like transfer paper but I find the pastel works well because you can choose what colour you want the outline to be and it works well with coloured pencil or pastel 😊

What kind of solvent exactly
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt Жыл бұрын
I use a Odourless Solvent by Art Spectrum, but you can use most solvents that oil painters use (Mona Lisa Paint Thinner, Odorless Solvent, Odorless Mineral Spirits, Gamsol, or natural versions like Zest It)

Interesting, I've never had this problem and I've been using it for years! The manufacturer has also stated that solvent is okay as long as you don't saturate it because it may damage the paper (but that's the same with any paper!) What spirits are you using?
