Its actually KHOL. Not mridanga. Because mridanga sounds more damp and male. But khol sounds more sharp and trebbly.

Hare Krsna.Yes it is a drum and it is a mrdanga.The word mrdanga literally translates as body of clay as traditionally mrdangas are made from clay with heads of animal skin.Nowadays ,they are also made from brass and fibreglass.Some also have synthetic heads.

Try mrudanga from odisha it has different ancient bit, always the best for kirtan.
