No Gene Simmons is because the x-factor of KISS and what made them famous was what they did on stage and Gene Simmons was the one spitting out blood and blowing fire which was unheard of back then (keep in mind that 10 years prior to the KISS explosion, the Beatles were playing on stage in suit and ties so performances were very milquetoast prior to KISS and Alice Cooper). People came for the music but stayed for what Gene was going to do next. As for Ace, and I know I am going to get flack for this, but Ace in terms of just technical skills and ability to improvise leads is easily the worst guitar player KISS has ever had. Ace is very good at making riffs, he's almost Jimmy Paige level when it comes to rhythm, but in terms of playing a lead Ace sucks. Vincent and Thayer are miles ahead of Ace in that department. Ace legitimately plays as if he reached a level of skill he was content with in the 70s and then never worked to progress his skills further.

I love Ace. Sure he's a flawed individual, but he's Ace Frehley. The man is everything that rock n' roll is all about. Without him, KISS really has no credibility as a rock band, they're simply an entertainment business.

Amen. Criss Oliva deserves so much more recognition. He did a ton of things that other guitarists weren't doing when he was alive. Such as frenzy fret tapping and down tunings.

Cool. Aug. 27, 1977. ALIVE II at the Forum. What these guys don't give him credit for is doing his homework and having a nice little blues riff that sounded like Page, but not bad Page, good Page. Ace doesn't try too hard, and it's part of his sound. I think he's nicer than people think, but I don't know. I'm confused about Kiss lately. I overdosed on Kiss in 2014. But at least Ace isn't part of Kiss anymore.

Ace was the bridge between the classic rock guitarists like Page, Townsend , Clapton and the Van Halen style guitarists.. Ace was quite innovative. No one sounded quite like him.. Early Kiss guitar solos were quite awesome.

Around 8:50 Ace says"Paul and gene never complimented me about my solos" But I actually read the interview after Ace Left they asked Gene why Ace was in the band and he said ," Ace could make the Guitar sing,a lot of guys can't ,they would audition and we would just say next" "Ace was the Kiss sound of that era,but the sound eventually had to change ,and Ace didn't " I think they didn't want ace to get on their level ,he was more like "The Employee"

Kate Andrews I totally agree with you. Some hang in longer than others, but time will get you, sooner or later. More so, in sports. Rock music, if played correctly, is very physical. It takes its toll. Ace was never a guitar clinic type of player. He's still a great guitarist, with an identifiable style. His playing makes more sense live, playing with a band, not isolated. Check out recent shows. He sounds great.

A lot of technical player never put a memorable moment down on a track. Plus, Ace is a rock star. They don't teach you that at Berklee.

J.D. Soos Totally. These guys have the raw street feel to theiir playing. Very musical , simple yet devastating. Technically brilliant players like Satriani, Vai, Malmsteen etc do nothing for me. Peoples ears pickup on musical players , as with a great sounding amp/guitar. All the best tracks KISS recorded for me were Ace's. His guitar work is very underated (by Gene and Paul), just watched a vid of him playing a few weeks back in Sydney, Australia. His chops are still all there. Ace is a very organic player as are all the greats. No matter what Paul and Gene say, Ace is a true Rock Legend and Icon. Espeacially to us guitarists. Thayer may be able to copy, but his playing will never have the heart and soul of Ace's. You can pickup immediately when you hear Ace that it's him playing. Not to forget the massive contribution he made in look , riffs , songs , playing style, inventiveness ( those unique effects Les Pauls) he created to the success and influence of KISS on a generation.

Ace's style is all Ear .I hear a lot of Jimmy Page ,and Clapton ,obviously,but actually SKYNARD is what i hear most in his Kiss alive era solos . He is from Ridgewood NJ ,a few guys mentioned they would jam with him ,and they were southern rockers doing Allman brothers ,down at the old ackerman music ,Midland Park Ace's style is like what an Artist would create as a caricature of a guitar player ,allways going for a sound or an Idea ,technique only a vehicle to do an other idea . I learned more about Jimmy Page from listening to Ace ,than listening to jimmy Page . Ace uses the exact Black Dog guitar phrasing at the end of Black Dog in

Totally agree man. I'm a huge fan of so much of what Ace did. Would seriously take me an hour to type it all out here. But so many of his interviews in the past couple decades or so just leave me wishing he'd drop the ego and all the resentment about past stuff with Paul n' Gene and just relax and hang out with the interviewer (or, in this case, the co-interviewee). Chris starts out telling him what an influence Ace was on him and all Ace can do is almost complain saying, "Ya know how many times I've heard that?". Okay Ace, then how about talk to Chris about his music or some of the common joys or pitfalls you both would have experienced as touring musicians. I get that he's probably just way too used to being asked the same questions or told the same things over and over but you'd think that would leave him looking for opportunities to have a different freaking conversation for once. But no, all paths lead to, "Y'know, Paul and Gene never once came up and said Hey, nice solo Ace". We get it, you guys were all a bunch of shits to one another but maybe if ya hadn't let the money n' fame fuel so much over-indulgence in the partying life, we'd never have had to hear of Tommy Thayer outside of Black n' Blue. C'mon Ace, get over yourself and the past and just enjoy your legacy bro.
