This is my favorite Kiss song. I love how they re-recorded it in the way they played it on that tv special in the 70's

Out on the street for a living Picture's only begun Got you under their thumb Hit it Out on the streets for a living Picture's only begun Your day is sorrow and madness Got you under their thumb Whoo, black diamond Whoo, black diamond Darkness will fall on the city It seems to follow you too And though you don't ask for pity There's nothin' that you can do, no Whoo, black diamond Whoo, black diamond Out on the streets for a living Picture's only begun Your day is sorrow and madness Got you under their thumb Whoo, black diamond, yeah Whoo, black diamond

Cause back then when Eric Carr was alive, Gene wasn't a big money whore (well, not as big as he's now) and didn't make remastered versions of old classics, apart from Beth... I'm still bummed that we didn't even get a "Alive" album with Eric Carr on it :/

[26 January 2021] Having just gone and listened to "Black Diamond" (which I hadn't heard before, and which was from their 1974 debut [1974 was maybe the best year for glam-rock and proto-punk]), I can say that it sounds like real rock and not schlock. Or at least, it sounds more like real rock (at least to me) than KISS's big radio hits ("Rock And Roll All Nite", "Shout It Out Loud", "Detroit Rock City", etc.) do. I like the hard tough guitar, the crude, dirty, gritty lyrics ("Out on the streets for a livin'.../They got you under the gun...", etc.), and the whoo-ooh-oohs that motor it along. But I must confess, I'd like "Black Diamond" a whole lot better if it had been recorded by almost any other hard rock band of the same era (Head East, Aerosmith, Alice Cooper...anyone, really), because I still can't bring myself to take KISS seriously. No matter if they came out of the same scene as the New York Dolls and the Ramones, KISS always sound, to me, less like a proto-punk band or even a real glam-rock band than like a macho version of a bubblegum group. Band t-shirts and band posters are one thing (practically every band has those), but somehow I just cannot take a band who got their grease-painted fizzogs blazoned across collectible lunchboxes (see here - www.greatestcollectibles.com/kiss-lunchbox/#.YA9yfOhKjIU - if you don't believe me), seriously. To me, that's the sort of thing that a bubblegum group like the Partridge Family would do (see here - www.ebay.com/b/Partridge-Family-Thermos-In-Collectible-Metal-Lunchboxes-1970-1979/1410/bn_7022440032 - for proof), not what a serious rock band would do. And even if KISS's debut, with "Black Diamond" on it, was pretty good, I still can't listen to "Rock and Roll All Nite" without wanting to puke. It always seems like a square song to me; a song about decadence that isn't decadent enough. I will always love the New York Dolls more than I will ever love KISS...And come to think of it, I will always love Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel, and Sparks, and David Bowie, and ( above ALL else ) Roxy Music (their first two albums! With Brian Eno! When he wore makeup and feathers!) more than I will ever love the New York Dolls. I mean, down with hard-rock, up with ART -rock, if you ask me. You can call me a snob and a poseur for talking like this, but I'm sticking by it...

They weren't really interested in making a statement though, unlike NYDolls and some others you've mentioned. Public will always gravitate to the lowest common denominator. I felt the same way for a long time, even though my tastes are different than the bands you've mentioned (aside from the Ramones & Bowie of course. I'm glad you didn't mention VU because I would've lost all respect for you immediately - most overrated band in history) KISS always seemed overhyped. By now they're no longer relevant culturally or musically, I can examine them without the baggage and realize there's some solid songwriting in their 70's catalog as well as some mighty Ace Frehley riffs in there amongst the generic BS pablum. KISS was always more of an Idea than an artist, though I admit it could've been a lot better executed. But they don't hold a candle in terms of ideas or music to the Alice Cooper band, and even their shining moments are largely due to Bob Ezrin, who is a genius producer.
