1975 : "Mistake" : Recorded at Larabee Studios, Los Angeles. (Noted details by Jeff Suhs) "Mistake" had been written for the first album, but had not been used at the time. The song is an outright country and western ballad in G featuring acoustic guitars bottleneck slides and an overall vibe much more consistent with Wicked Lester than even acoustic offerings like Hard Luck Woman". Recorded at the same sessions as "Rock And Roll All Nite" in California. The fact that Paul sings lead on the verses may indicate that he penned the song though no byline is included on any of the paperwork. Gene clearly shares vocal duties on the verses and on a brief bridge that modulates from G up to B. There are sporadic embellishments throughout that might qualify as a solo though they are such standard licks that it's impossible to determine who is playing them. As it stands it is the earliest demo

Great pics from Kiss at a great time. They were having fun and having laughs before money, greed and egos destroyed the hottest band in the world. Cool tune as well.

i think it sounds as though it is playing slow, just a touch. first lead break sounded like Paul trying to be Ace, and the little lead pickin' toward the end sounded very Ace. love it, but i love everything KISS! thanx for putting this up!

Why is it that all of the really great KISS stuff comes when Gene and Paul have not even started KISS yet? This song is miles above anything that KISS did back in the 70's and I love KISS but I have to be honest. . .

It is reported that this song was written for their first LP but was held back. It's a demo that reflects the popular folk-flavored rock of the time (ala, Rod Stewart) and was considered again for Dressed to Kill. Personally, I like it but I wouldn't want it as a part of a KISS LP. A box set cut would be killer, but I'm glad that they narrowed their sonic scope. Bands like PFloyd have a broad range, which spectrum KISS has always been capable of writing, but I've never wanted that for KISS.

The reason this sound so familiar to a lot of people is the Guns and Roses song off of Lies Lies Lies. "I used to love her But I had To Kill Her". the acoustic version. This was done years before Guns came out.

"Mistake" should have been released on KISS "Dressed To Kill" with Peter Criss on lead vocals!! Peter Criss had one of the greatest faux British raspy vocal styles similar to Steve Marriott (Small Faces lead vocalist & Humble Pie co lead vocalist) Rod Stewart (The Faces co lead vocalist) Ian Hunter (Mott The Hoople lead vocalist) Michael Des Barres (Silverhead & Detective lead vocalist) Paul Rodgers (Free & Bad Company lead vocalist) Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin lead vocalist) Orignally, Paul Stanley wrote "Hard Luck Woman" for Rod Stewart & Rod Stewart really should have recorded a version of the song cuz it would have been a HUGE HIT for “Rod The Mod” !! Especially when Rod’s solo albums at the time in the mid 70’s we’re becoming increasingly more commercial after he moved to the U.S. and had Stax Records Booker T & The MG’s & The Memphis Horns back him up on his Warner Brothers mid to late 70’s studio albums. Rod’s greatest musical period in The Faces and his earliest solo career running concurrently & the 4 Faces studio albums on Warner Brothers & the 5 solo studio albums on Mercury Records. Anyways, Paul Stanley had Peter Criss sing lead vocals on “Hard Luck Woman” & it also should have been a hit song for KISS coming off the back of the HUGE commercial success of “Beth" power ballad also sung by Peter Criss…

I've been saying that for years, and I'm always surprised no one really sees it. Let Me Know, Room Service, Don'cha Hesitate....but really, every band from the 70s owes a ton to the sound the Stones formulated on Beggars Banquet thru Exile.

This song has a whiff of Eagles (rather like "Love Is Blind" ). And yes, very Stones-y; Paul and Gene borrowed quite liberally from the Stones, The Beatles, The Who, and other similar bands, and that's no secret (they've divulged it themselves). Maybe a 2013 acoustic version? This would've been a fun one for the '96 MTV Unplugged album. And KEEP the slide guitar- that's a refreshing element!

Yes, but is Paul at lead vocals, Gene is in the choir. A song that it would have been fine in the Paul Stanley's 1978 Kiss solo album.

This is not KISS but rather Paul singing with Wicked Lester. If you notice Wicked Lester was a much better musical group than KISS. But KISS became much greater than Wicked Lester would have ever been. Wicked Lester would have maybe put out 1 or 2 records then faded into obscurity.
