Welcome to the Geeking Poetic channel! In this new episode, your host Larry Roberts takes on the task of ranking all of the KISS studio albums from the 1970's era (1974 thru 1979)! This includes only full complete studio albums, so live albums (such as KISS ALIVE or ALIVE II), compilations like DOUBLE PLATINUM, THE ORIGINALS, BEST OF SOLOS, etc., and promotional records or maxi-singles are not included. This list is based on our own personal tastes and opinions about the records and as such are not intended to be some kind of "official" or definitive list of any kind. This is just for fun (so please, be kind!) We encourage you to let us know in the comments what your list would be, as we plan on doing a follow-up episode in the future discussing your choices for least to best KISS studio albums of the Seventies!

I agree on Dynasty. Fun album, and disco isn't the theme. Just that one hit caused it to be labeled a disco record.
@GeekingPoetic
@GeekingPoetic 4 күн бұрын
Yeah, even evidenced by some of the replies on this video people still call it the "disco record", which is ridiculous. Imagine if they'd not put those two disco songs on that record and instead put something from Paul and Peter's solo albums on there instead, noone would call it the "disco record" at all. Can't label a whole album after two freakin' songs, but they do it anyways *sigh*

No disrespect,but if you’re not including the live albums. Why compare the studio versions to them? I think most would agree that the live versions are better. But I think if you’re taking them out .Then the studio albums should stand alone.
@GeekingPoetic

Alright I understand your point. It's not really so much about comparing, in as much as just talking about how I prefer to hear the songs. But I understand where you're coming from. Thinking about it from that angle, yeah, it might have made sense to just include Alive one and two. Appreciate your feedback and thanks for checking out the video!

Yeah, I can see that way of thinking about it. Honestly at this point after seeing the responses and thinking on it, I would've just added the two live albums into the mix. It's just a silly YT video that has no importance thankfully, haha! But I might revisit this again, especially since I've gotten so many good responses with people's own lists I want to highlight their choices and I might revise my own. Especially going forward with other ranking lists I have planned. I appreciate the input and insight there, honestly, thanks for commenting and watching!

Great video, Larry! Thanks for sharing your thoughts and insights! I love checking out album ranking videos. And I'm ecstatic that everyone's preferences are different. Our top two albums just happen to be the same. After that, it's all over the place. However, the point that I'm trying to make is- your list is 100% spot on. Because, it's YOUR list. Everyone's ranking is correct. This is just a testimony to how great of a band KISS is. And what they've meant to all of us, through the years. Hell, you could have put Peter Criss' solo album at number 1, and I still would have hit the thumbs up! And, in reference to your point about the live vs. studio opinion. Completely agree. In fact, to go one tic more extreme. After hearing the Strutter Demo. I have no interest in ever listening to the studio version again. The demo version has more fire and bombast than both the live and studio versions. Also, I really dig the KISS trading card boarder you put around your screen! Great job, brother!

Thanks for your comment and checking out the video! Yes as I said in the video and in the comments here, there is no "correct answer" when it comes to a list like this, the truth is that the only list that matters is your own. Plus I mean, every album here I love to some degree, I certainly have no desire to trash these albums as they mean a lot to me and so many others out there. It's just fun to see how people's favorites compare and contrast! I'll have more ranking videos up soon, and hopefully you'll check 'em out. Cheers!

I saw my first Kiss concert in Oakland, Ca, 1976. I was 17. Though I wasn't a big fan and I'm still not of Destroyer it did get the girls listening to Kiss. That and some of Dynasty. I realize too the live versions of what's the first Kiss album are probably better, for the most part, but you can't ignore the quality of the songs. I "spin" that one the most. Thank you for your video.
@GeekingPoetic
@GeekingPoetic 3 күн бұрын
Oh no without a doubt, like I said in the video the songs on the 1st album are stellar. I think people misunderstood my intention a bit and that's my fault, I should've made it more clear.....when I mention that I prefer the live versions, I'm explaining why I just don't spin that album too much anymore, simply because when I want to hear those songs I'd rather hear the live versions. But in no way is that meant to denigrate the importance or awesomeness of the studio versions in most instances! I ranked these primarily based upon which albums I spin the most frequently and from beginning to end.....not meant to be indicating that any of these albums are "bad" or "worst". They're all great! I should've done a better job making that clear I guess, but I'm still learning :) Thanks so much for watching and commenting!

On KISS Vinyl, I have Alive! (1975) coming in. I'm 29, so I never had a chance to get this when it was first released and I'm very excited to spin it on my (admittedly cheap) record player. My only problem with the used vinyl I have coming in is that it's missing its booklet :( going to have to buy it separate so I have the total package. I'd like to get some of the vintage action figures, but I'm going to go that route after I get the albums up until 1982 on vinyl (might return to collecting post-Ace stuff, but Ace is my favorite, so I'm less inclined to collect the rest).

To me that's part of what makes listening to KISS so great, it isn't a stale or same-y catalog by any means, can appeal to so many different tastes and moods but still somehow always sounds like KISS, at least to me! When they remastered the catalog in 1997 I snagged all 4 solo albums cause I kept hearing the Japanese market was issuing mini LP versions in 1998. I believe with most of the world the ‘97 reissues are still the common release. As they were only around for about a year in Japan I can’t bring myself to open them lol I still have all 4 Japan 1997 solo cds still sealed with OBI. I have all of the USA cds so I can still listen to them. Really Aces solo is the only one I listen to regularly lol I also still have my Strutter 3” mini cd set (5 cds) I’m sure you have this as well. All 5 cds have the same 3 tracks. Each member has their own cover and a group cover. I love how Paul has his original Bandit make up on 🔥🔥🔥

I love DtK and its 'bubblegum' sound, I think this would have suited most '70s Kiss songs overall very well. I certainly prefer it to Ezrin's echoing production style, never felt it suited Kiss. I even prefer HtH's dungeon sound to Destroyer, it just keeps sinking in my rankings so many fillers on that album with one track in particular worth it all, the opening song of course.

@@GeekingPoetic I like both live albums a lot. I just prefer the Destroyer, R&RO, Love Gun era over the early era. I agree with you that the live versions of most songs are stronger than the stiff, clean studio versions - which is why I place Alive 2 at the #2 position. I need to give Ace's solo album a relisten. I can spin Paul's record all the way through.And a vocalist myself sing along. I would put Rock and Roll Over on top. Dressed to Kill and Dynasty. I have my issues with the sound on their earlier recordings. Great episode.

Thanks for showing respect while reviewing Peter's album. I'm sure if it had not been one of the first albums (of anyone) I bought (at 9 y.o.), I'd have a similar view, comparing it to others. I love the album, but it belongs near the bottom. Gene's belongs at the bottom. WYWUAS is embarrassing (although sung well) and Radioactive is sooooo overrated.

Peter's album is great in it's own right, I do enjoy it I just don't listen to it that much except when I'm really in that R&B mood. As for Gene's, like I said I really like the diversity of it, it IS an unusual record and I think that's why I like it so much, but I agree there's a few songs on there that are "meh" to me. I appreciate the sentiment and reasons behind why he did the Disney song, but it's not one I need to sit around and listen to often, haha. Thanks for watching!

I love KISS. I must object that the solo albums be included. They are most certainly not KISS albums. On that note, in my humble opinion, Paul's is by far the best.

Yeah I've gone back and forth on that one myself over the years. I included them because like I said, the band themselves have stated that those albums are to be considered part of the official KISS discography so I put them in there. Paul's is definitely the most KISS-like, overall.

I find myself wanting to put on the Gene record more often than Love Gun, even though both records have songs I'll gladly skip. If Love Gun's production and energy was at the level of, say, the studio songs on Side Four of Alive II I think it'd rank higher for me. But honestly if I never heard Then She Kissed Me, Hooligan, or Christine 16 again in my life I think I'd be ok with that haha But again, in essence I do love all of these albums to a degree and they're all special to me. Cheers.

Haha, that's the European pressing, back in the 70s they altered the logo because the double ss looked too Nazi-like. In Germany all of the vinyl pressings have this logo even today.

I agree with this ranking 98%. Peter Criss's solo is shit. Rock and Roll Over is best. I would have flipped the positions of the Gene and Paul solos. I'm thrilled that I'm not the only one that thinks Hotter Than Hell sounds like it was recorded over the phone (plus it has awful album art).

Again I have to say, it's not a matter of saying better or worst with this list. It's a matter of how often I play the albums in their entirety and without skipping songs. I play Gene's album more often these days than the other two. When I want to hear the Love Gun songs I tend to gravitate towards Alive 2. That's all.

You got a thumbs down for Love Gun instantly. You have no explanation. Nothing you say puts this that low. Its EASILY one of their best albums. You cant rank live versions of the same songs higher. Thats ridiculous. The you put Dynasty, the KIss disco record HIGHER than Love Gun. You fail dude, hard.
@GeekingPoetic
@GeekingPoetic 4 күн бұрын
Bah. lol Dynasty isn't a "disco" record, it's got two songs that qualify as being disco at best. Magic Touch, X-Ray Eyes, Save Your Love, Hard Times (one of Ace's best, IMO), 2000 Man, Sure Know Something and Charisma have nothing to do with disco, and are some of my favorite songs of theirs. I'd take the "disco" songs over Then She Kissed Me and Hooligan any day. Christine 16 isn't a strong song but at least the live version has a bit more energy to it. Tomorrow And Tonight rocks live but sounds tepid and forced on the studio album. I stand by my ranking of Love Gun, but I knew people would get all up in arms about it, haha. I've just never cared for that album's sound overall, especially coming after Rock And Roll Over which sounded huge and aggressive....And then listen to how huge and energetic the new songs on side four of Alive II sounded that came after Love Gun. To me, Love Gun pales in comparison. But again, it's still vintage KISS and I still have a love for it, just not as much as the others I put after it. Cheers.

@@GeekingPoetic Dynasty is a disco record, they even admitted it, and 2 songs is 2 too many for a METAL band. Then she kissed me was cool twist on an old song, they did it really well, play it with passion. But you ditching Hooligan over I was made for loving you says all we need to know here lol. FYI, I actually grew up during that era. I roller skated to that crap song. Dynasty is Kiss playing into the Disco craze. Gene even said HE hates that song. That song alone is the biggest black mark on KISS's entire history and album discography. Google "Why is KISS Dynasty their most hated album?" I personally love every song on LG. It was my first rock album, got it when I was 6. I stared at that cover like the kid staring at the leg lamp in Christmas Story. lol

I grew up during that era too (I'm in my 50s) but y'know again, different strokes for different folks. Actually I was thinking more in terms of "Hooligan vs. Dirty Livin" and I personally like Dirty Livin better, great guitar solo in that song. Hooligan always felt kinda clunky to me *shrug* Again man, y'know we can argue about this all day long haha but truth is these are all great albums. Even though I rank Love Gun low on my list, keep in mind that I still like it way more than, well, thousands of other albums out there! I played my Love Gun 8-track hundreds of times ( I actually still have it!) back in the day. It's just not one I listen to very much anymore, like I said I prefer the live versions of those songs and usually I'll only put it on if I want to hear "Almost Human" and "Got Love For Sale", which are two of Gene's last truly killer songs he ever did, I have to admit!
