The reason why Totie Fields was great in this episode was because even though Chaim (aka "Gene Simmons") Witz was trying to shock the audience with his "The Demon" persona, she saw right through it and could tell he was a mensch from back in Eretz Yisrael. "Is your mother watching?" "Just a nice Jewish boy." "You can't hide the hook!" That's why she called him out.

Mike Douglas had the Rolling Stones on US TV first before anyone and then KISS! He really had an open mind like Ed Sullivan did and Merv Griffin did. They all had cutting edge Rock acts on their shows first and helped promote them to become famous and household names across America. TV was the best way to reach millions of people instantly. Elvis and the Beatles benefited from TV the most! This footage is what KZbin is for and best at! It’s like a cultural time machine you can go back and relive moments from the past or shows you missed the first time around like this one. It’s all preserved for posterity on KZbin. Which is why I love KZbin! What an episode! It’s amusing how Totie Fields sees through Genes act and isn’t intimidated by it. She even zings him and makes jokes at his expense. Very entertaining! Thanks to whoever uploaded this. I’m a KISS fan from back then as a kid but I didn’t see everything and now I can this show again. 👏🏻😮😊

Why in the US do you convert all slavic people to jewish? Judaism is a religion and not an ethnicity. So being jewish is a simple choice, an etnicity you have a lirrle less choice in the matter and KISS is a slavic band. DO THEY LOOK LIKE JEWS? I couldn't care less what your religion is, its like leading with being attraxted to men, DID I ASK YOU?? but dwelling on the religion is crazy...but I think in the US...slavic is feared and that makes me grin.

Totie Fields (to Gene’s left) was a legendary comedienne who died in her 40’s from a blood clot. She was on Laugh-In and used to tour all over the country. Loved that she was on this show and delivered some ball busting to Gene, which was normal and expected on Mike Douglas and probably why she was booked on the same show . Part of the early Kiss act was to be outrageous and play foil to the status quo.

I’m always impressed with Peter Criss’s understated drumming in this clip. Very tasty fills in the pre-chorus sections and that little flam ( or whatever the precise terminology for it is) he uses right as they’re coming into the second vocal stanza is GOLDEN! Very subtle and probably nothing he’d ever have used at a live gig. But here on this small soundstage he could use it to great effect. He really was perfect for this band at this stage in their career!

Mike Douglas was kind of like the mirror image of Dick Cavitt in terms of talk show host style. He was the totally square midwesterner, while Cavitt was the farm boy who moved to the east coast and became educated, urbane, witty, and was in tune with the art of his guests. What they shared was that both instinctively understood the power of television as a mass medium and delighted in promoting entertainers.

Funny considering he wanted to join kiss because him and David Lee Roth wasn't getting along to say the least

Even though Gene is 25 in this interview, he looks and sounds like he’s in his teenage years

He's actually 24.

So cool seeing Gene from years ago, thin and with the boots looks like an NBA player instead of a rockstar. The evolution of the make-up over the years, not to mention semi-straight hair. Very cool 👍

That's what I thought, he's so thin there.....

Gene is so in character here!! It was so believable in the early days. Nothing forced.

Really? Seems pretty damn forced and awkward from where I’m sitting.

The interview and the cutting shows, America was not ready for kiss at this time!they were much to early here at this show!
@Shikta-poobah678 ай бұрын
More like KISS wasn’t ready for megastardom at this time. Gene is downright embarrassing here. A year or two later they got their thing down and hit the big time, but America was definitely ready for it. There had already been a lot edgier things before this.

Really is a miracle that kiss made it from then to now, didn't look like they got off to a very good start. But who knew how things would change over time I just don't know how they could wear makeup for decades
@Shikta-poobah678 ай бұрын
My grandmother wore makeup all the way up to her last days at the age of 96. It can be done.
