Thank you for sharing your gems, Tony. Wonderfully encouraging work. I have also been modelling during lockdown. Whilst not a East Coast Mainline loco, I built one of the Golden Arrow resin kits, B17 “East Anglian”, using a loco drive Hornby B17 chassis. Very easy, to build, but very rewarding. Keep up the lovely work.

Lovely smooth running as always Tony. Imho since the early 2000's most RTR manufacturers' chassis have been suspect in terms of either haulage capabilities, longevity, reliability/quality. Adequate for smaller trainsets not for the larger ones with actual mileage and scale tonnage to consider. It's refreshing to see Mike Trice using 3DP etc. It's good to see cottage industry suppliers moving forward.

Masterful work! And the real train rushing by the house is the pièce de résistance, not to mention a prototypical '13 up' being hauled by the Gresley Pacific, or the scenery, wow!

Nice H&M Clipper transformer!👍 Still have mine, bought sometime in the mid 60s... And using it on my test bench too (having been replaced in the mid 90s by powerful Titan 3amp ones on my main layout!)

Indeed chassis and what you use to propel them ! I had to give up kit building locos some years ago, simply because there are NO decent barrel shaped coreless motors with bevel gearboxes, or even 5 pole skew armature types with decent sized flywheels. That will give enough power to haul 12/13 car trains, even around my minimum radius 5ft curves. I still have two Comet chassis fully built for a GWR Hall & a SR Lord Nelson, but even with Mashima 1625's & flywheels, they wouldn't pull as much as a modified Hornby Hall chassis, or even the new Hornby Lord Nelson chassis after a few mods including added weight ! I have found it far easier, quicker and often cheaper to take a current Hornby or Bachmann loco, alter or add body detail, and improve the commercial mechanism. For example a Bachmann SR N1 with 5ft 6in ghastly cast wheels, I rebuilt as a U1 changing the wheels in the process to profiled Romford 6ft Nickel silver, which alone revolutionised the performance of the chassis. Adding roughly 25% to the power and making the loco as smooth and quiet as a mouse. Despite the fact the Bachmann motor is not exactly "Rolls Royce" quality to start with, it now hauls 12 car trains, and having polished the motor bearings and added quality Fleischmann oil with the correct viscosity, runs very sweetly, even at a scale walking pace !!!

I need the following locomotives. Holden 5F, J15 and J16. I need these for a 00 gauge layout of Ongar Station as it is today. I’m a volunteer on the Epping Ongar Railway and am making a promotional layout to make a proper display at model railway exhibitions.

Very interesting video and love your presentation. What would now be 50 years ago, (I was14) I built a Wills fine cast SR class G6, a wonderful little loco, I’ve never been able to source the Hornby Dublo chassis that actually fits. Do you know if there’s a chassis kit for this little gem .. keep up these wonderful videos they are great joy to watch Cheers Gary

“Optician was a charlatan” haha!! Mine must be a snake-oil-brewing carnival store holder then 😆 Thank you for sharing these stunning models, something to one day aspire. I’d like to build a GWR 36XX as well but mine will be significantly cruder using fairly rudimentary FDM 3D printing fitting of my skill levels, equipment and facilities, but we all must start somewhere and for as long as we derive pleasure, long may that continue

Hi enjoyed your presentation on kits and your right about building cheaper and better if you have the time, I’ve built kits for almost 25 years now and love the heavy die cast with a comet chassis. But one thing that I notice is the on a lot of the A3s people tend to leave the old wills cab in place . I’ve always replaced it with an ectch from DJH or some other manufacturer much improving the looks. This old cab was ripped off by the tooling company that did Hornbys new Flying Scotsman in the 90s ,spoiling the then model . I know this is nick picking of nice models but it always catches my eye. Thanks for the post beautiful models

Hello Tony, I really enjoyed this video, and your take on things amusing to say the very least. I am someone who has yet to complete a plastic tanker kit from Dapol, with two failed parkside wagons and a failed Cambrian kit to my thus poor credit to date. I have a DJI I think Southern S15 kit in a box, waiting, no knowledge and an appetite to maybe one day replace my collection with kits that I have built. A long way off as you now understand. I desperately wanted to make two Southern R1 shunters from the SE Finecast stable, but when pricing up with good wheelsets and a motor came to over £215 each if memory serves. So I need to learn a lot before such a task is attempted. There is also the matter of one of the main supplies of motor ad gear sets ending. does that prove a potential issue for such models in the future? Anyway, I draw inspiration from your channel, all I need is a fraction of your knowledge and skills to continue. best wishes , Paul at Sandling Junction

Another good helpful guide. Are those two kit built A3s from Wills Kits? Are DJH going to produce their kit again? Those two A3s look good as layout locos. The Trice V2 is an incredible rendition, when you did the write up inn BRM recently, why did you not fit a whistle? Lol. The V2 produced with a Comet chassis looks like the best you have built yet.

I think Tony Wright and others may be interested in this rare seen colour film segment of the ex LNER A2/2 in very early nationalisation days when renumbered as 60502 but still with LNER on the tender and coaches. Given his interest in these locos. Pristine in LNER Apple Green departing Aberdeen with a sleeper train. Especially with the recent Hornby release of the A2/2. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iYnOpIWceJZnmrsm20s The rest of the film has much that interests me as well and I expect others.
