This video is about the process of buying a Schionning Kit Catamaran. We wanted to share what it was like for us to go through the process of creating our concept model, then collaborating with Schionning Designs to create the design for a new 50' Performance and Cruising Catamaran called the 1520. And finally, to purchase the kit. Besides being a Performance Cruising Catamaran, our new hybrid boat model will have a Parallel Hybrid Propulsion system. This video will take you through the process, step by step, of purchasing a DIY Kit Catamaran Kit. For any of you who might be interested in purchasing such a kit from Schionning and building your own DIY Kit catamaran, this video may help you understand the entire process of purchasing this catamaran kit.

Learn a lot from your sharing, so much info inside. I need to watch it twice I also work on my own catamaran aluminum build. Now I am ahead of your progress for a little bit (one hull ahead), but I believe you will soon surpass my progress, because you are so professional and have such perfect and detail planning

We are glad you enjoyed the video! We wish you the best for your continued build of your catamaran, maybe we will see you out on the water one day. As for us being professional, certainly the kit is detailed, and already all CNC cut, with excellent plans for construction, but hwen it comes to the skill to put the kit together, we are amature builders. Still, I am sure we will pick up the skills we need swiftly enough and Schionning Designs will hold our hands for the whole build process so we have them to lean on. Our goal is to have the main structure of the boat assembled in one year, then spend the second year working on all the various systems and detailed finishing work.

@@SailingSVLynx Yes, by looking at how you organize information in such high profession. I totally realize you are a super pro and definitely will pick up the needed skill by doing I have no skill on metal work before, and just like you are SW engineer background. All my skill was on "programming". But learning by doing will be very quick. Definitely will make some mistake at very beginning I have a feeling that you will make less mistake compare to me. It is already in our design. There will be one solar panel up there, with a long acrylic 'skylight " next to it that the helmsman and line handler may use to see the sails.

This is my dream boat for my family to cruise the world! How many hours of build time is expected and will you DIY or outsource the work? I recall in another video the schedule was approx two years, which I believe is feasible but very hard 100% DIY? Great content and I'll watch every video on this channel :)
@SailingSVLynx
@SailingSVLynx Жыл бұрын
We are building it ourselves, with three full time crew and a few part timers. Schionning estimates 6,000 man hours to complete the build, but we think it will take us more like 10,000. At 2,000 man hours per full time crewman, two years seems feasible. Glad to have you watching!

We are currently building a similar concept 15 meter cat and went through very similar design process. This is a great presentation, congrats! One thought though, I don't see how you are getting up to the boom and mast base quickly. How is your reefing going to work? I would also suggest you add rainwater collection around the edge of your top and the gutter for that acts as a secure handhold when going forward in lumpy conditions.
@SailingSVLynx
@SailingSVLynx Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment and suggestions. To answer your questions, we are adding a ladder to reach the roof. All three of our reefing lines lead back to the helm winches. And, we have already designed in a rain collection system, with integrated handhold along the entire cabin top. There is also a tube going down from the forward portion of the roof rain cachement system that leads down into the rainwater filtration system located in the center locker, forward of the salon windows. This system then feeds two watertanks, one in each hull, which are seperate from the main water tanks. Do you have a link to a webpage or videos for your build? Regardless, I wish you the best in finishing your cat and hope to see you on the water one day!

All the changes you made are excellent. The helm design is like FP's, very functional to separate line management and the helming operations. This design checks a ton of boxes. When do you expect to receive your kit? Will you be discussing the costs? Your engineering background adds a lot to your videos.
@SailingSVLynx
@SailingSVLynx Жыл бұрын
Hey Pete! Yes, I like the FP helms, though, to be honest, I designed and modeled about 50 different catamaran configruations from scrach, over 15 years ago, before FP started making their helms that way. Back then, I had already decided that this was the helm design for my future cat. I was not surprised that FP started making this helm configuration since I already thought it was a very functional configuration. To answer your second question, we hope to recieve our kit by the end of January, 2023. It is currently being cut at Advanced Materials Design in South Africa. However, with shipping there can be delays, so it might not get here until sometime in February. As for costs, yes. We will be doing a video about all the costs to build our specific boat in the near future. However, for our Patron Crew ($2 on Patreon), we already have a complete cost breakdown of every cost we expect to spend on our website at www.svlynx.com. As for being an engineer, that was my father's occupation: however, I have been and am still a designer and have designed many different types of products from software to hardware. Most recently, I designed a lithium battery for the marine and home industry. After prototyping a few of these batteries, I recently sold my design to a company and they will be manufacturing these batteries. I'll let people know about the company later on. I plan to use these very battreis on S/V Lynx once their production gets up to speed. Thanks for following along and the comment, we appreciate your interest in our catamarn project!

@@SailingSVLynx Hey Philip. We have a Lagoon 400 and the helm is a little dysfunctional with two people on the seat which makes me appreciate your helm design. Schionning's website could do with your design and organizational skills. I looked at Schonning's website a couple weeks ago but left confused. I'm guessing now that is how your videos came up on my youtube selections. Your videos have a lot more information about Schionning's kits. The Solitaire 1520 looks like the perfect cruiser. Look forward to following the build.

@SailingSVLynx Жыл бұрын
Howdy Pete! I appreciate your compliments, though I think Schionning recently updated their website. As to being the perfect cruiser, that was the goal in my collboration with Schionning. I wanted to keep the performance, so I kept the hulls the same and tried to keep the weight down, but I wanted to add to additional comfort for a cruiser, a hybrid. Of course, we will also be a hybrid propulsion system as well, but I am talking about a hybrid of performance and comfort. We will go over the hybrid propulsion system in an upcoming video.

@@SailingSVLynx Really love what your doing. Having done a 1100 mile passage on the Salina I love the helm and like the changes you've made. Using the roof rim as a hand hold is a compromise as I feel it's first priority should be as a hand hold. I love the idea of collecting rainwater as a backup. FP does this well but I imagine it could give build challenges. The FP doesn't have that rim by the helm seat and in bad weather you gat a wet bum even with really good drop downs.

Here is an idea take the shrouds back to the sugar scoops-s allowing the boom to pass inside . This allows down wind without chafing on the shrouds . And clears the side decks from contortions .
@SailingSVLynx
@SailingSVLynx Жыл бұрын
The shrouds have specific bulkheads that they must attach to and engineering reasons for their placement on a catamaran. This is not something that can be moved, certainly not by us, but thanks for the suggestion. It never hurts to explore ideas. Also, at this point, our boat engineering is done and the kit is being manufactured, so changes of anything other than small non-strucutal things can no longer be done. We can change things like a shelfs placement, etc., but nothing major. :) To speak in nautical sayings, that ship has sailed!

It depends on the model, but figure something around 20k (USD), of course, that's just the plans, not the kit to build the boat.
