Kit Review: ICM vs Meng - German stormtroopers of WW1 in 1/35 scale

Der Erste Weltkrieg bleibt modellbauerisch für mich auch nach den einhundertsten Jahrestagen interessant. Mittlerweile haben ja einige Hersteller Figuren zu dem Thema zu bieten, und deshalb bietet es sich an mal solche ähnliches Sets direkt miteinander zu vergleichen.
Beide Sets beinhalten vier Figuren in angreifenden Posen, aber ICM hat ganz klar die Nase vorn: Die Gussqualität überzeugt und wir bekommen eine Menge an Extrateilen und Zubehör. Der Meng-Bausatz zeigt einige Schwächen bei der Gussqualität und der Aufteilung der Bauteile, außerdem bekommen wir nur ein Minimum an Zubehör. Besonders störend empfinde ich die falsche Formgebung der Helme.
Der ICM Bausatz kostet ca. 9€.

The First World War remains interesting to me from a scale modeller perspective even after the centenary. These days a lot of model brands offer figures of this subject, so it is feasible to compare similar sets directly with each other.
Both kits feature four figures, but ICM has clearly the edge here: The mold quality is great and we get a ton of additional parts. The Meng kit shows some weaknesses in the mold quality department and the general layout of the parts, we also get a minimum of accessories. Annoying in particular are the wrong shapes of the helmets.
The ICM kit costs about 9€.
The Meng kit costs about 13€.

I recently purchased the WWI infantry box from Revell. I was surprised, but not disappointed, to find ICM sprues inside. They are quite nicely sculpted figures and particularly affordable. My only gripe is that one of the four figures is an officer, which is not helpful if you're looking to establish an entire squad by purchasing multiple boxes.

Far from all Revell reboxings are bad for a fact, the stuff they get from ICM is very worthwile indeed.

Many thanks. I have an interest in the period and had previously bought the ICM German MG08 as my first kit, after your review I am very pleased I did. Though, as my intention is to 'model' Belgium 1914, I have also bought their 'German Infantry 1914' set for the picklehaube - plus their Belgian infantry. Too much, too soon? Fingers crossed. 😊

Servus Sehr überzeugender Vergleich von dir. Bin vom Preis und der Leistung die ICM bietet sehr angetan. Gerade die zwei Äste Ausrüstung sind zu diesem Preis beispielhaft. Soviel Extras bekommt man nicht mal bei der teuren Generation2 vom Drachen😉. Für mich doch ein überraschendes Ergebnis von dem ich so nicht ausgegangen bin. Gruß und frohe Ostern, Carsten

Danke Carsten! Solche Vergleiche bieten sich nur selten an, aber hier kann man das mal gut machen. Jeder Bausatz für sich sieht ja erwartungsgemäß recht gut aus, aber wenn man es nebeneinander sieht relativiert sich eine ganze Menge :)

Great vid!! A very-very interesting comparison! ICM is the one!! :) Though I've got them both too; not too much WWI modelling stuff around. ICM and MiniArt are improving very fast; that's the new Ukranian revolution!! Oh along with the Polish IBG! Competing with China must be tough though, as your first comment (about a general preference for MENG) shows, the Chinese marketing departments have been doing an outstanding job

Thanks Daniel :) I´m actually not overly into building WW1 tanks, figures are the thing for me there! I have a few ideas for these for sure :) I think that brands like ICM, MiniArt and Zvezda are doing an excellent job these days and their kits are much more affordable here.

All my modelling attention is toward WW1. I'm glad to have found ICM after decades of substandard Tamiya. ICM quality makes them my first choice besides they throw in an extra infantry weapons kit with most of their figure sets

I honestly predate the infantry kits that ICM produce, because you also get the spire packed with kit you can use in your diorama and change the soldats equipment out if you wish. And I'm pretty sure that they also source the equipment spures to other companies like MB and such.

On your recommendation (through your videos) I have bought a few ICM figure sets and overall they are very good.... But then again, I'm happy to use the original Tamiya figs that come with some kits, so I guess I'm not too fussed, really! ;) Surprised that Meng has some less considerate sprue connections, you'd thought a modern kit maker would have learnt to avoid such matters.. but as long as they are still usable to a degree, it's ok I guess.

Oh no worries, the Meng figs are certainly very usable and i do a little bit of tweaking here and there anyway. Old Tamiya figures, yuck! Not my cup of tea :D

@@HamilkarBarkasScaleModelling I know, that's why I mentioned them.. ;) At the IWM they have a selection of German WWI helmets on display as part of their WWI exhibition and they did indeed strike me as being quite large, almost over sized, compared to the later types. They also have a collection of close combat trench weapons, some really nasty stuff as used by all sides. Clubs and batons with nails and spikes etc, some quite medieval looking, but no doubt doing the job at the time. I liked their WWI tank, unfortunately it was displayed in such a way it was near impossible to get a decent photograph. Me and Collin tried to figure out if it was genuine or a replica, but having given it a good knock, it sure seemed solid enough to be real. (And having googled it just now, it is indeed a genuine WWI Male tank.)

Ja klar, es hat ja auch alles seinen Verwendungszweck. Von denen hatte ich auch mal die IDF Panzerbesatzung, die war teilweise schön, teilweise aber auch recht grottig. In Plastik gibts da allerdings kaum bessere Alternativen.

Erstmal Frohe Ostern . Dann hätte ich noch eine Frage, in zwar ob du schon mal einen israelischen Panzer gebaut hast und welche Farbe du dafür benutzt hast .Also für diesen IDF Farbton. Wie du benutzte auch ich Revell Farben habe allerdings bis jetzt noch die richtige Farbe bzw. Mischung gefunden . Danke

Danke dir, ich wünsch dir auch ein paar schöne Tage über Ostern :) Bei Fahrzeugen der IDF kommt es stark auf das jeweilige Jahrzehnt an, die haben öfters mal ihre Farbtöne geändert. Ich halte es meistens so: Bis in die 60er nehme ich Matt89, von den 60ern bis Anfang 90er Matt45 und ab da passt Matt67 recht gut. Es gibt von Lifecolor für jedes Jahrzehnt passende IDF Farbtöne, die natürlich noch treffender sind.

Ich mag diese Vergleiche! Sehr gutes Video! Tja, Figuren zu modellieren, lernt man nicht im Vorbeigehen und ich kann nur hoffen, dass Meng nicht den Fehler macht, Figuren als eher unwichtig zu betrachten und stiefmütterlich zu behandeln. Es gibt da einen ukrainischen Hersteller, der es lange Zeit nicht begriffen hat und damit meine ich nicht ICM. Abgesehen von einem Griff in die Kloschüssel kann ich ICM nur loben. Für die Fahrzeugmodelle gilt meiner Meinung nach dasselbe. Da habe ich ein paar und die sind wirklich nicht schlecht. Meng macht mit dem Preis direkt den nächsten Fehler. Kein "weiter so"!

So oft bietet sich so ein Vergleich leider nicht an, aber dafür ist es umso interessanter :) Wenn man die ICM Figuren nicht als Verlgeichsobjekt hätte würde man bei Meng sagen, dass das eigentlich garnicht übel ist. So aber sieht man schon deutliche qualitative Unterschiede. Meng hat es ja mittlerweile auch mit Resinfiguren probiert, wie die sind habe ich mir noch nicht angesehen.

@@HamilkarBarkasScaleModelling Da muss dann aber auch sehr gute Qualität auf den Tisch, denn es gibt genügend namhafte Hersteller großartiger Resinfiguren. Ich werde wohl spätestens im letzten Quartal dieses Jahres mehr Geld in Figuren investieren, zumindest für Dioramen, die nicht extrem figurenlastig sind. Ich bin also gespannt. Wenn Du die "Männekes" von Meng mal in die Finger bekommen solltest, bin ich sehr an Deiner Meinung interessiert. :)

Have you ever considered reviewing any of the masterbox indian war series they've released recently? Having been interested in that period of history, their Native American figures they've made are EONS more accurate than anything on the market so far! PS your reviews are by far the best on the platform!

Some ICM figures are good . Weapons and personal equipment are the problem for most manufacturers . .. they don't have enough bulk . They may get a rifle's length correct but it's too skinny in 2 dimentions. The same with most equipment. Some of this is easy to understand... a Luger barrel would be very tiny in scale...but a rifle should not be skinny .

That is an interesting point of view! Most people would probably say that such figures are still too bulky for their taste, but maybe it is better to sculpt a figure not that skinny. However, figures sometimes appear to be out of scale, but there are different people around, some are fat, others are skinny, small, big, short legs, long arms, big and small heads.

Auf diesem Wege möchte ich mich mal bedanken für Deine informativen Videos. Ich hab Inspirationen und Ideen bekommen für meine eigenen Modelle. Letzte Woche habe ich mein großes Projekt fertig gestellt, welches nun in einem Museum in Zemach (Israel) ausgestellt ist. Auf diesem Modell stehen u.a. die Sturmtrupe von ICM. War mit den Figuren von ICM voll zufrieden, die Pferde von Masterbox allerdings haben meine Erwartungen nur bedingt erfüllt (haben schlecht zusammen gepasst und ich musste mit greenstuff nacharbeiten). Vielen lieben Dank für dein großes Lob, das spornt mich sehr an! Die Figuren von ICM sind in der Regel sehr gut, da kann zum Beispiel Masterbox nicht so direkt mithalten. Man nutzt aber, was man zur Verfügung hat und es geht auch :) Das ist ein sehr interessantes Diorama, spannendes historisches Thema! Ich bin besonders beeindruckt, dass es auch gleich für ein Museum verwendet wurde, prima!

Good review. The ICM figures are far superior to the Meng. The details on the MENG set are soft and equipment looks really poorly detailed as well.
