I was watching some 3D gaming clips in VR the other day and it is amazing how much depth 3D adds to games. For all of the push for graphics, I find it interesting how actual depth is called a gimmick when it is a LARGE component at making something look believable. Plus, if the Switch 2 had a 3D screen it would once again set itself apart from the other handhelds. I also hope the Switch 2 has improved haptics and adaptive triggers.

While it was fun, it was also frustrating because it made a lot of people's eyes hurt and those of us who have bad motion sickness, it was constantly triggering it lmfao. I liked it in theory but couldn't play more than 10 min with it on. And the 2ds was ugly and unpleasant to hold in hands, so I had to pay more for a 3ds where I barely used the 3D effect. I'd rather that doesn't come back, unless they drastically improve it, and I mean DRASTICALLY.

53:07 I agree. The word “gimmick” is such a broad term in games that people often consider any gimmick to be unnecessary. But if you removed from games all the things people call gimmicks, you’d be left with nothing but a menu screen! I love a lot of the “gimmicks” Nintendo come up with. I think the Japanese devs understanding of the word is much better than the connotations we have

Speaking of gimmicks, I loved DS Download Play! One of my all-time favourite gaming memories is when I took my DS with me on a school trip during the height of its popularity. A bunch of my friends also brought theirs, and even though we didn't all have the same games, we could still have a blast playing Mario Kart, Cooking Mama, Big Brain Academy, etc together thanks to the magic of Download Play. Even my normally austere no-fun headmaster joined us,,, and turned out to be a scarily good at Mario Kart!? I'd love to see some iteration of that return, even though game filesizes are insanely large now, which perhaps makes it a little impractical.

I have to correct the record on 3D. There were actually very few games which did not use 3D on 3DS, even by 3rd parties. The way you discussed that made it sound like it was just a few games and that’s it, but that was not the case at all. Only a very few titles at the very end of the system’s life did not use 3D. Also, the New 3DS had eye tacking and you did not have to be careful with holding the newer models to maintain a 3D effect. All that said, I do not really feel the feature should come back. Also, I disagree with some of what was said about HD Rumble. It is very useful for people with visual impairments to have tactile feedback on their devices. I feel we often ignore disabled people in conversations like this. And HD Rumble is not just used in Nintendo games, but a number of high-profile indie and third-party games as well, such as Hollow Knight which gives different kinds of vibrations to help the player understand when they are landing hits, having their hits blocked, or receiving damage. But it is true that HD Rumble has been very unevenly utilized in the life of the Switch, even by Nintendo themselves.

You know what would be really nice if they brought back? The ability to player certain multiplayer games with friends if one of you have the game and being able to play that game too like they had on the DS, which would really boost the community using the Switch on the go. They could limit what the user could do or customizations in-game for the ones that don't have it, but the ability to play along with friends would definitely increase the self-image of the Switch's identity of being a more community driven console.

Gimmick is a buzzword in the gaming industry. People often use the word gimmick to describe features or mechanics they don't like instead of "a marketing device intended to attract attention". The argument about gimmicks gained traction when the console warriors tried to discredit the contribution of motion controls during the Wii days, and because developers failed to properly implement motion controls resulting in forced mechanics. However, hindsight is 20/20 and we know now that motion controls are capable of being used in practical ways. The point is that Nintendo doesn't dabble in gimmicks, they create features that don't always pan out, but often get revisited and perfected in later console generations. Rumble motors, motion controls, touch screens, and dual screens were all called gimmicks at one point, but they're pretty much accepted as standard features now.

It feels like the only people who really knew about the PS2 button pressure options were the people who tried to play one of the few games which supported it with a Playstation 1 dual shock controller, which would normally work fine for PS2 games. The Matrix game was one I seem to remember needing a PS2 controller to play. I'd also be kind of disappointed if they went for digital as opposed to analogue triggers again.

That being said, nearly every “pro” version of controllers (Xbox, PlayStation, and even modded gamecube controllers) add a feature that puts in trigger stops and eliminate travel time. Bit off topic: one of the biggest wishes I have for my life this year, is that you're wrong about Mario Kart being the launch title. This would kill my hype for launch. Mario Kart is not a good launch day game, it's too casual, and as Reggie wrote in his book, Nintendo is very aware that it's the most hardcore fans who are early adopters. They need a big adventure with lots of content, a 3D Mario.
@luigigamer3339 ай бұрын
Alright here's my 2 cents. I think with rumors now that the next Nintendo console won't launch till March 2025, I think that Nintendo is listening to all of the community ideas before finalizing when to include in the final product. They are using your content to gauge people's interest in different features. I personally think they should have all of the streetpass and community based features on a mobile app that acts as a 2nd screen for your Switch 2 and that way you can carry it with you everywhere and don't have to worry about carrying a bulky console on you at all times.
