A trick for 3d printers that someone told me is if you're printing models for an army and you need to print duplicates, mirror the model in your 3d printing program. Someone holding their weapon in their left hand rather than their right hand really helps hide twin poses and load outs.

A lot of 3D modelers make multi part models anyway. Even if you count simple variants like shields, one-hand weapons and simple hands/fists, you already have a lot of variation. Once you go into head, torso and feet variations, you're in business. And if you discount the initial investment for the printer and the material, you save a shitload of money, compared to what GW sells, for example. Although I've seen way more expensive stuff than what GW sells.

That digression about Space Marines makes me think: if you could chop off pegs to make arms more classically modular anyway, could you do that _between_ kits? Take a copy of the Intercessor and Assault Intercessor kits. Then, swap the sets of arms. So you'd have Intercessors with running poses, and Assault Intercessors with standing poses.

I have mixed feelings. I did exactly what Brent just did with his chaos warriors, with 40 of the new orks a few years ago. And because of the more dynamic poses of the newer orks the end results look much better than any of my previous orks made with the older multi-part kits. I loved the fact that so many of the bits from the older kits were interchangeable; you could use your leftover bits from one kit (or even the old fantasy orcs) and use them to spice up a group of boyz; but most of the silhouettes were still very 'samey'. I still use all the old bits (except torsos and legs) in my conversions of the new boyz kits.

Like the Cthulhu Wars cultists, which are probably my favourite cultist designs ever, but they're all the exact same sculpt. Not much kitbashing that can be done with them, but the arms can be changed. I also changed the head on one of them, from the standard hooded head with skull mask to an unhooded, mostly bald and sinister looking guy, which was a bunch of work, but worth it.

I recently converted a chaos rhino to look a bit more Nurgley. I used some tentacles from some GUO bits and use some green stuff for some living flesh patches this was also my first experience with green stuff. It didn’t quite turn out the way I wanted but I think it looks ok. I also converted a daemon prince again to be a little more Nurgley, I changed his horns to, again, a GUO’s horns from a spare face, and I used a face from a Foetid Bloatdrone it makes it look like he is wearing a gas mask and gave him a fly buzzing around his sword. I've bee doing these kinds of conversions for years now, but it's always nice to get more inspiration from others. Monopose and especially starter set models are a really nice challenge. I can, however, understand that some people that don't enjoy the building aspect of the hobby as much may be frustrated with them. For cutting joints, I usually prefer my sharp hobby knife over clippers, if I want to preserve both sides. If there is a lot of space to fill in, sprue goo may be a better choice than just plastic glue, as it can act as a filler on top of providing the same effect plastic glue does. When drilling in or otherwise hollowing out a hidden area of a model to alter the hidden joint, pieces of the sprue itself may bee good substitutes for hidden sections of the arms, if these are missing on the selected new part. On the Space Marine intermission: I like to glue the pins back into the shoulders after removing them from the torso, so I have the full surface for the glue to work with and not the hole in the middle. I've long reached the conclusion that a big part of what makes the Primaris Range so much better looking to me than the old multipose models is actually the fact that legs and torso are connected. The old models had the ability to freely rotate at the hip, but compared to the new models it just looks silly how the belt and everything upwards just stays static as opposed to the different layers of the armor moving to accommodate the movement of the wearer. Also, funny how you kept coming back to the thing about twins finding other twins and taking their heads. I'm not sure the twin aspect is the worst part of the interaction though, at least one set of twins may have more pressing issues.

This! I did this exact same process with my 40K Ork boyz a couple years ago, jeweler's saw and all. I have been a strong advocate for using a jeweler's saw (over that of clippers) whenever the topic of conversions come up. When the "new" mono-pose ork boyz came out I bought 2 of the combat patrol boxes, I had 4 copies of 10 different sculpts to have to differentiate. And I pretty much did the exact same thing, I made one of each exactly as instructed, and then I went to town converting the others.

@@GoobertownHobbies - "the combat patrol had duplicates in the box!??" Yes it did. While I was initially put off by the new monopose orkz, it really wasn't difficult, and was a fun exercise to convert the duplicates. And because of the much more dynamic poses I have come to actually prefer the new boyz models, with one caveat, you must also have plenty of the older bits laying around to kitbash with. If I was just getting started and didn't already have a sufficient bits box, the lack of options with the new kits to swap in and out, would be crushingly frustrating. Luckily I have been collecting orkz since 3rd ed (2000-2001) and have what some might describe as too many bits; no self-respecting ork collector would ever say such a thing, but someone who collects one of the "stuntier" armies might.

For swaps like the axe-to-the-other-hand, I would suggest drilling a shallow hole in the hand that is about the size of the axe haft, rather than gluing it on flat. So, I did similar thing with the freebie Stormcast Eternal that you can get in WH store, or in the Getting Started magazine (I had 3 of those total from a big online order) - rotating wrists with weapon and heads to follow the speartip gave a good effect - but what changed a lot of the stances, was clipping the original stud from the premade base, and rotating the models on the sculpted base, so their feet would be at slightly different levels than original - on models without sculpted bases you can easily do that with a thin piece of cork, or thicker blob of texture paste under one leg.

This kind of thing works great for Necromunda too. The kits are sliced up into all kind of weird tiny pieces, but you can easily swap weapons, or stick extra gear on the belt or whatever. And of course they have the extra heads & stuff that they sell. Speaking of dropping things, on the Escher Death Maidens there is a kind of belt buckle that covers up a gaping hole in the abdomen. So of course it took flight and disappeared while I was working on it. I stuck on a couple more grenades to cover the hole. 🙄

whoops! well at least she got some more grenades :-)

So for your not entertained I've seen a fun trick with plastic glue where you apply it to a piece wait for it to be almost dry and then repose the softened bit, I've seen that used to do some extremely delicate reposing with turning a trigger finger into a pointing finger, but making his mail loincloth hang straight down should be fairly doable.
@GoobertownHobbies7 ай бұрын
cool idea! I bet there are some situations when that's just the ticket

@@GoobertownHobbies though I suppose a dip in hot water would let you do the same thing.

I like everything that you're doing here. This is wonderful and I want to try it on some of my own duplicates. I wouldn't dare try this with super glue though. Plastic glue is definitely going to be your champion
@GoobertownHobbies7 ай бұрын
Nice! Have fun making your new characters :-) I used plastic glue for most of this... but on the weaker joints sometimes I coat the outside with superglue as a lazy bit of reinforcement

I'd better take notes, I have around 50 of the old, old plastic Goff Orks holding a shoota in an arm which was a separate part, and an axe in another fixed arm. Nice to see the Chaos Yellows back, I was watching the 24 hour painting video just this morning! The blue chap is splendid, though.
@GoobertownHobbies7 ай бұрын
hey thanks! I bet you can easily make a handful of distinct goffs.... 50 different lads is gonna be tricky though, but I'm sure you're up to the challenge ;-)

I'm usually building the first squad as per instructions but in the process look at what i could be changing for the second and third group. When I'm getting to the third or 4th squad is where i might start using some putty.

You'd be amazed what you can do with a dremel with a cutting wheel, some greenstuff and bits from other sprues. Good man. Hobby up!

I'd go mad with power! :-) I do actually have a dremmel, I should investigate options for cutting wheels that do a nice clean cut on plastic without lighting it on fire

"you can't have twins seeking out other twins and taking their heads" while I agree 100% I think it would be hilarious to go completely overboard with it, exchange minis with other collectors and make an entire unit, if not all chaos warriors, the same guy with the same head. It's going to be really silly, but thistime intentional. and thinking about it some more,it would probably fuck with whomever poor soul is facing these guys. Maybe it's Tzeentch shenanigans.

I accidentally reposed my pentitent engine kit recently. I thought I built the legs correctly, but I'd accidentally angled them one notch too far forward. So my mortifier looks like it's diving forward, about to superman smash through the enemy lines. One of the best 'happy little accidents' I've had while hobbying.

Have you considered sculpting your own details? Like dirts on some places or simply making a chipped sword to normal again? (or making a brand new sword chipped with a knife :))

Love the positive and optimistic tone of this video!! Often we hear a lot of criticism of the monopose designs, and not a lot is said about how easy it can be to make changes that will give your troops a more unique look. Monopose is great if you just wanna slap things together, and simple conversions go a long way. ❤
