Andrew I know everyone has their preferences in the kitchen. I would suggest that you 1) build hood over gas range to vent in attic, build space in island for microwave and 2) if refrigerator will be enclosed both sides, plan on 38/40”W and 74”H. We regret not doing so and would cost too much now to rebuild or re-configure adequate space for the refrigerator. The exhaust on microwave is, IMHO, noise with little filtering results. Great video as always.
@TKCL3 жыл бұрын
I agree with some of your points. Our last house had a vented microwave and it did a very good job. Keep in mind the shop and pantry will have additional options for freezer refrigerator units.

Did you say you can put fans on those plastic ceiling boxes? I've always used a ceiling fan bracket or extra bracing for them. Not so much for the weight but because of the vibration and movement. I just don't trust those boxes to hold up and also not work the nails out over time. Also, I've started seeing a lot of LED lights with selectable color temperature ranging anywhere from about 2700 to 6000. So you put it up and if you decide you don't like the color just pull it down, slide the switch to a different setting, and put it back up. It's a nice option, something to think about. Everything is looking great, you're a hard worker, especially in that heat.

Make sure to add an extra block for your switch boxes off the doors to account for width of your molding around the doors. Don’t want your covers to be to close to the molding. Also make sure switch boxes are behind the door when it opens. Once sheet rocked hard to adjust!
@TKCL3 жыл бұрын
Yep, I'm move one box just because of that. Thanks
@mfd45053 жыл бұрын
After watching this one, the switch box by kitchen door needs attention. Looks like it needs blocking for trim width. Also if you can drop a plumb from center of lights, so that lights are over the counter surface. If too far out, your body creates a shadow. With the big fan, ensure can lights are not above fan blades. If so, you have a strobe effect.

Hey Andrew, you might want to think about your microwave venting now while you have the chance. Microwaves give you three options, blow it back into your face, up the top, or out the back. Most houses have it blow back into the house which I personally hate, yeah, strong word, but true. If you go up you'll have to have the holes in your cabinet and up through the top before going sideways to vent out. Since you're still in stud phase, the best option is to plan to go out the back into the wall, then go up and out. Something to think about. Oh, don't forget the microwave outlet in that upper cabinet.

You mentioned you would be putting in LED lighting...will that be 120VAC or 12VDC? If you do run DC you can very easily use dimmers for under cabinet and/or kick plate LEDs for night-lighting that doesn't blind you. Another bonus is that you can use battery backup to keep them going in the event of an outage.

Another thing to consider prior to an installed and working HVAC since you are sealing your home very well is to have constant airflow in the home as soon as the walls are sheathed, seamed taped and windows installed to prevent mold since its just you building the house which is not at the pace of the fast construction of today.

On your electrical, the micro-vent (microwave vent hood) over your stove and the refrigerator each need their own dedicated circuit since they are utilities. Double-check with your inspector if the need to be GFCI or Arc fault protected since they are dedicated appliances, you may be able to add a single outlet for your oven to the micro-vent circuit. -Edit- You forgot the box for your micro-vent. As someone who was an electrician for years, you are going a good job of the electrical, so far.

This house is overbuilt, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. My friends dad bought a 1988 Toyota that was over engineered, drove it for almost 400K miles before he sold it, only had to replace the timing belt on it once. It had no rust, engine ran great, probably could have used another timing belt but there is nothing wrong with over engineering especially if your the end user.
