I'm fitting an off the shelf kitchen, making & spraying some doors to fit on, a few other jobs around the house & some preparation for the kitchen fit, This video is about skimming 2 coats with Thistle Multi Finish plaster to cover the patches in the wall the electricians cut into.
The first coat i put on was just a thin coat to level the wall & fill any remaining imperfections, the second coat was a little thicker to give a flat finished surface.
I don't make these videos to make money, I make them to share the tips I've learnt over 36yrs as a joiner, but filming, editing, exporting, reviewing & uploading does take a lot of time so if you have gained anything from any of videos & would like to help me out & donate pls click the PayPal link below, every little helps & will be much appreciated. Thankyou.

Glad you like them n that's good to hear. when editing i try not to cut out too much but also need to keep the relevant bits in, it's a juggle between the two, about 20mins is what i aim for but like i say I don't cut bits just to make it fit the ideal time length, & i don't have to allow for an intro or the added bull in many other's vids 😏 Thanks

Painting on the water/PVA mix, it can be a pain to see where you've already been, especially on a white wall or ceiling. I find throwing a handful of plaster into the bucket turns it a dirty pink colour, making it easier to see if you've missed any patches. Great work and video as always 👍

Looks a much better finish than a lot of the professional plasterers finishes I've seen on site.

Thanks. Yes I modestly agree, most of my clients i plaster for just paint it with very little sanding & filling, I don't have a plasterer in my phone because i haven't found one I'd recommend, The ones that did the seated window room i just finished were shocking, I'm hoping the decorator tidied up, haven't been back because of the lockdown so we'll see.

@@Gidjoiner I've only ever seen one plasterers finish that I thought was excellent. The owner of the property was a builder and the plasterer was his friend. I remember asking for his details but the builder warned me that he was booked up for something ridiculous like 18, 24 months as he was in such demand.

👍 Yeah reminds me of a kitchen i saw, the paint finish was flawless, i presumed it was sprayed but they told me the decorator painted it by hand, it took him a while & he wasn't cheap, i asked for his no' but was told he's always booked for mths, quality takes a little time as well as skill, if some of these tradesmen gave a shit n put a little more effort in then there'd more gud uns around 😉

Thanks, i modestly agree, my clients paint their walls after with very little filling, On site i mainly did commercial stuff, shops, banks, pubs, offices etc.. I saw some excellent plastering but in houses it's generally a bit crap, I don't know if they just get lazy after going self employed or were never trained or good enough to hack it on a building site in the first place,

excellent, I love plastering it is so satisfying. I find cleaning the trowel on the hawk after each float ensures that you are not dragging old plaster over the wet stuff.

Thanks terry, 👍 I've done a fair bit over the yrs, I wouldn't do it as part of a paid job if i wasn't happy with the end result, when i compare mine to some of the 'plasters' jobs I've seen then modestly i have to say yeah not bad for a joiner 😁👍🤣

I agree that a thicker first coat would be best, lots of scratching sound indicates it's going on to thin. That said the finish seams ok, try using longer strokes when applying, trowelling up etc. All the best!

It’s taking shape Gid. Last few days with it being so warm and sticky I bet you’ve known to it! Look forward to the corner unit going together, I’m guessing you’ll make that in the workshop. Enjoy rest of your weekend Gid 👍

Hi yeah it's slowly getting there, yeah sweaty days, the muck sticks to you. The base units are in there, they are just Howdens standard white ones, the corner unit is two of these with a corner post connecting them, I'll only be making the corner post 70mm L-shaped & spraying that, Doing the rear drum brakes on the van today, didn't film that, way way too much swearing 😆 Thanks,

Trowel is a "Ragni" Italian brand. I have one! Nice work.

I cant read the name on the handle very well because it's worn off but it does say Ragni, Made in Italy 13", It's served me well, must 20yrs+
@alexbowie6316
@alexbowie6316 5 жыл бұрын
Ye gads..............................that's the old black Ragni trowel. It was a reasonable cheap trowel and about half the price of the Marshaltown many years ago...........about 8 quid iirc. They are also quite small compared to what Plasterers are using now. That's the older way of putting on a "lay" coat, then a second. Theory is, you put a lot of pressure on first coat to consolidate it to the wall. Nowt wrong with it, I did it myself on those backgrounds. Younger guys tend to put one thicker coat on now, even on boards You have good hand skills. Like most things , it is having a feel for the material and what it is going to do. ie setting quick with suction, and polishing at the right time. Good job you did for a Joiner mate and considering you ain't plastering every day, the finish is good.
@Gidjoiner
@Gidjoiner 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Alex, yeah it's a Ragni 14" i think, it's seen me through 20+ yrs 😉, i do have a bigger one but these walls aren't flat, not even straight, the amount of plaster i have to put on for that bigger trowel is too much, this was just a thin skim to tidy up the wall & the first bit was just to fill the holes ready for a second better coat, I do a fair bit of plastering & as you say once it's on the wall it's when to work it n when to leave it alone, not bad for a joiner i agree, i don't get any complaints & as a slightly fussy man myself I wouldn't do it if it looked crap in the end. I get too many bitchy remarks on my plastering so don't think i'll be showing that in future, as you say I'm a joiner n that's what i'll be sticking to

Hi, sorry I'll be coming back at some point, had weird yr 2022, the work i was doing on that house with the stairs was bitty & hard to make into videos, I was working with the builders & the client trying to get stuff done here n there in order to suit both , I filmed everything & was just getting to a point that I could edit the many clips I'd made of the jobs I was on but I was poorly at Xmas 2022, Pneumonia & Sepsis, it messed me up a bit,, I did try doing some bits of work mid yr 2023 but it was hard work, so i'm finding I just need to get myself up n running before thinking too much about work, I'm not rushing & I don't bounce back quite as would've done a few yrs ago 😊 I put a post on Facebook of hospital pics. Keep well yourself 👍 facebook.com/media/set/?vanity=gid.joiner&set=a.5954405001312483

Haha sorry, You saying I'm working too much 😆 There is going to be a bit of a gap now,,,I think, A few more doors to hang & kitchen doors to make that are the same as what I've already posted so will prob keep that brief, I could have loosened the taps on the radiator & lowered it down but their reaction was "can't you just plaster around it" so that's what i did, i did feather the plaster in a bit, better than some lumpy plastering I've come across behind radiators. Thanks 👍

It’s called a trowel. Also you haven’t put enough on the wall in the first place . It’s not floating
@Gidjoiner
@Gidjoiner 6 жыл бұрын
If you listened to me i wanted to fill up the hollows first then i put a layer over, did you just skip through it then decide to go straight to the criticism . FYI it's also called a float! Google it. "plasterer's float - a hand tool with a flat face used for smoothing and finishing the surface of plaster or cement or stucco."
@stevenfrench9188
