Thank you so much for your helpful videos! How would you compare the efficiency of downdraft extractors vs venting hobs? I understand that the traditional hood is the best, but if this is not an option, what is doing the better job between these two? Thank you!

Awesome video, exactly what I was looking for..!! After an year of this video, do you think the Vented Hobs are still not so much effective? A disadvantage of venting outside is that we cannot do that in an energy efficient house :/, since it will expell the heated air out of the house as well :(

What an informative and well made video. We can only downdraft our due to a roof lantern right over our island, which would you say is better in terms of extraction, a downdraft hood or a vented hob? It’s in an extension that we have ducted out through the floor. Would really be grateful for your advice. Thank you.

Thanks so much! Typically downdraft extractors will have a higher extraction rate. However, it's not as simple as that. Of course! You're comment/question got me thinking, so I wrote this kitchinsider.com/downdraft-extractor-vs-venting-hob/ I hope it helps 👍

Which would be better? We have a 12' cathedral ceiling above our electric range. Should we use a pop-up downdraft, range w/built in downdraft, or put a fan in the ceiling near the peak (12')?

Another thing to consider about the units that have the vent included with them is that you are extremely limited in your choice of cooktop (hob)... If you are wanting a cooktop with a high BTU burner (i.e. 18-23K BTU) for stir-frying (e.g. wok cooking), you are going to have difficulty finding one, much less one at a decent price... My kitchen has an 4-burner Jenn Air downdraft cooktop with (2) 10K BTU burners and (2) 8K BTU burners in a granite countertop... I have yet to find a replacement with a high BTU burner and a downdraft exhaust... In my opinion, the downdraft units also seem to lose a lot of the heat that should be heating up your pots and they definitely don't catch all the fumes that my cooking of hot peppers generates since my wife will leave the house when I start cooking something for myself... Realistically, I probably need something like one of those chemistry lab fume hoods... :)

Thank you for the great video. Could you consider doing a similar video on hood options for cook hobs not on the island (but by the wall)? It would be great if you could discuss the options and installation height requirements for different cook hobs, hanging or hidden in upper cabinets, etc. I’m researching for my options for a hood over a gas cooktop, hidden in upper cabinets. But due to the installation height requirements, I’m not sure how feasible that is.
@kitchinsider

Thanks so much! I'll add it to my list 👍 In the meantime, I wrote a little bit about that topic here - kitchinsider.com/induction-hob-clearance-regulations/ If you get an extractor that uses perimeter extraction they can often be installed at a lower height, which may help you out? (Always double check the install regs though)

Thank you so much, Michael! Very informative article on your blog, I really appreciate that, and love the design of your blog. I do a lot of searing and stirfries so i need a very effective ducted hood above the cooktop. And I also prefer the minimalist, linear look so it will be at the same level as the bottom of all upper cabinets. So this height is important to me, and yes, I’ll check the specs of the hoods. There’re so many brands and models to look through, not sure where to begin. Anyway, thank you so much! Maybe one day you’ll list some of your favorites on your blog? 😊

@kitchinsider
@kitchinsider 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! A ceiling and downdraft are pretty comparable. Consider which is more feasible to install for your kitchen/room. More important (in my opinion) is if one offers you the ability to vent to the outside, go with that one. As that's always better than recirculating. Usually, that's easier with a ceiling hood. Here in the UK - AEG, BOSCH, NEFF, SIEMENS are good brands I've used a lot but I particularly like a brand called ELICA when it comes to cooker hoods. I've also written about both downdraft and ceiling hoods on my website if you wanted to learn more. Just search for each and you'll find the posts - www.kitchinsider.com I hope this helps!

@@kitchinsidergreat videos and really helpful. I’m embarking on an extension and new kitchen (uk), and same as you keen for outside extraction. I’ve been looking at vented hobs alot but nervous that when it comes to it, like cooking a steak etc that it will not cope. I have the luxury of being able to put in any variant due to new flooring and ceilings. The induction hob would be going on an island too. (noted your other tips on this 😊) What would you recommend? Or a combination of vented hob and ceiling extractor but then it’s ££££! Thanks!

This was so helpful. Thank you! I feel I am quite stuck. I have a 12ft. vaulted, angled ceiling above my island. I do not want to obstruct my view with a chimney. My island does not have any space for a downdraft. In a perfect world, I would love a beautiful ductless unit that can accommodate my high ceiling, have good task lighting and strong motor to vent. Am I asking for too much? Thanks for you help!
@kitchinsider
@kitchinsider 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! Pleased you found it helpful! 😁 Hmm, that's a tricky one. There's always some sort of compromise with these things. Do you have room for a venting hob rather than a separate downdraft? If so, you could go for a venting hob, vented out if possible, if not, recirculating to help with smells and add a wall mounted fan elsewhere in the room to help vent to the outside (a bit like a bathroom fan) then have some nice pendant lights to help with task lighting on the island. Just an idea 🤔

I have the same situation and I am thinking about using a creative combination of fans and windows to vent. An overhead fan, when run in reverse, can pull air up toward the ceiling and the windows near the ceiling can be opened to vent out. I could also use a small fan in an open countertop height window. It’s a bit experimental so could be an expensive experiment, but could work perfectly!

Hi there, I had a De Deitrich MOD HM2800 E1 cooker hood installed in 2003. it has a number of component parts the controls and filter hood mounted in a bespoke hand made chimney venting via a 4 inch SS pipe to an external extra fan mounted in an outside SS box. It has stopped working and I cannot find a compatible replacement extraction units. any Ideas? Thanks

The newer venting hobs have bridging zones now so you can put a pan anywhere on the hob. Also your theory of the extraction not catching all the grease and steam because it’s not above the hob, do you think that all the grease and steam is going to be caught by an extractor hood that is 900mm above? mmmmm food for thought 🤔 Great video btw 👍🏼❤️
@kitchinsider
@kitchinsider 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, bridging zones are a great feature! I'd definitely recommend having at least one side with the feature, they can really come in handy. I don't think any extractor will catch everything but as heat rises I think there's more chance extractors above will catch more (up to a point.) It's hard to say how effective a 900mm gap will be, it really depends on the type/spec of extractor. It's not always about the 'best' extraction though, sometimes the room has restrictions or your kitchen design isn't conducive to a particular extractor. (Or you simply don't like them) It's about finding the best solution for the way you cook and use the kitchen, with the design/layout/look you love and works for you the most. Thanks so much for watching and commenting! 😊

In the UK are there regulations that say you have to have an extractor? Or is it just purely from a cleanliness point of view that people install them? My current cooker hood hasn’t worked for years and I’ve got out the way of using it tbh and just open a window if cooking odours are too strong etc. So I’m now wondering if I should actually install one in my new kitchen reno? Then I think if I don’t am I just being a bit …..well gross 😬
@kitchinsider
@kitchinsider 2 жыл бұрын
It will depend on your situation. I have a written an article all about this here - kitchinsider.com/need-cooker-hood-kitchen/ In short, you will most likely need to have some form of ventilation but that doesn't have to be a cooker hood (can be more like a bathroom extractor fan, just more powerful). Obviously, a kitchen cooker hood is designed for the job (and usually comes with lights) but if you don't want one, there is this other option.

It seems a lot of appliance types and brands that we have here in the UK (Europe in general) aren't available in the US. Starting this channel and talking with a wider (worldwide) audience has really highlighted this. To be honest, I don't know why. Hopefully they will start to make their way over there soon!

1:51 cant you just vent it up through the roof like a chimney ?
@kitchinsider
@kitchinsider 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, under the right circumstances. Although most homes will have another room (bedroom) above the kitchen. The other issue that can happen is the moisture will condense in the vent and drip straight back down. I've seen a few drippy extractor hoods in my day. Good point though!
