Kitchen Remodel: Part 12 - Bamboo Door and Drawer Fronts

I have made the door and drawer fronts to the kitchen cabinets from 3/4 inch bamboo plywood. One big advantage to this is that I did not need to cover the edges of the fronts, as the plywood is solid bamboo. Also, the plywood has a strong, linear grain pattern which I could use to bolster the horizontal design strategy in the kitchen. I started by cutting the height of 33 inches that I needed for the fronts. Then from that, I cut the width that I needed for each section of the cabinets. The door fronts I left a little wide to allow me to do a final fitting once the doors were mounted. The drawer fronts at this point were a single panel for each section. From these I could make the individual fronts. I attached the drawer fronts by getting them positioned, then clamping them to the drawer, and finally attaching them with screws from the inside of the drawer. I used a wipe on polyurethane finish.

Looks wonderful! Great looking bamboo ply. I'd be tempted to french cleat the whole wall. End grain cutting board that can double as a shelf, custom racks that hold bowls with prepped food, adjust a shelf to make room for that extra tall appliance, hanging knife block, spice rack that can travel to the dish. The possibilities are endless and effectively double your prep/counter area.

Frank, two thoughts. One, I think you did the right thing in that corner under the sink. We have a similar area in our kitchen, but wide enough for a narrow drawer. That drawer cannot be fully opened now because it hits the range. Yes - our kitchen needs a remodel. Second, I really like the look of no upper cabinets (or shelves). It looks so spacious and open.

Frank, first thx for sharing your work and the very high quality of your videos...always enjoy it....second might be a tip to position the panels/doors for the drawer...use double sided tape to position the panels! stick the tape to the front of the drawer...position the the panel and if satisfied..push the panel against the drawer (double sided tape)...than screws from the back and you're done... All the best from Germany

Sharp looking kitchen for sure. I'm jealous of all of your counter space. I've never spent a moment in a kitchen thinking, "Geez, there's just too much work surface!" The bamboo fronts really complement the stainless steel appliances. Just the right touch of warmth vs. modern in my opinion. Great job, Frank!

A tip I learnt from an old timer for putting on drawer fronts: Drill clearance holes in the drawer, but not so big that the screw thread doesn't bite. Put screws in the holes with just the tip poking out the front. Place the drawer front where you want it and give it a couple of blows with a soft mallet and the screw tips will leave a mark where you need to drill your pilot holes... It's a hard one to explain, but simple to do, I hope that explanation made sense!

I can't tell you how much I really enjoy watching your videos! I always come away having learned something and with a smile. You are obviously a very smart man, but come across as very humble and approachable. Today's lesson for me was bamboo plywood. I never knew it existed and am now going to go to my local lumber yard and order some in to do some projects with. My initial research says it is extremely expensive so will have to really think what I will use it for. Anyways Frank, thanks for taking the time to put these videos up, I love them!

Frank: I like the bamboo look for the style of your kitchen, and I just want to let you know that I've heard from a few cabinetmakers that it tends to warp fairly easily (especially with large doors, or even in flooring applications). For this reason, I'd actually recommend finishing the drawer fronts and doors fully on all 6 surfaces (front, back, and 4 edges) to help minimize this. I realize that they're already installed at this point, but I think it would really be worth the extra effort. I'd also be very interested in hearing a follow-up on your kitchen maybe 6 months or a year down the line.
