General Description: Kitchen Stuff
In this series, we build kitchen accessories. Cutting boards, spoons, boles, handles for stuff, drawer dividers and other items that are used in the bar or kitchen. By looking at this list, you can tell I have an idea of what I want to eventually start looking at. Stay tuned
Episode 3: Kitchen Reno - Drawers Half Blind Drawers
I had a client that wanted drawers installed into existing cabinets. This is an issue for several reasons.
- Drawer faces are generally shown, not enclosed behind door fronts
- The structure of a cabinet is built specifically for drawers or shelves - typically not both
- Cabinets that have drawers are generally limited to 18” in width
Each of these obstacles can be overcome if you plan for it.
- Drawers are made a bit shallower and Half Blind dovetails are used to hide the bottom panel dado
- Special hardware is used to support the drawer slides (the cabinet sides were only ¼” thick)
- The drawer bottoms for wider drawers needed to be supported without interfering with storage
The Saw Stopped:
The break engaged on the Saw Stop in this video - I actually have that on video an you can see the saw jump. I could not find a reason for the break to engage in the video. I did contact Saw Stop, I got a case number and sent them the break. As of completing this video, they had not responded. As of editing this video, I contacted them again and they responded the next day, that will be the subject of another video and I will offer them the chance to comment prior to release of that footage.
There are a few tips for dimensioning lumber in this video. We did a lot of that. As this was a client job, I really wanted the boards to be straight (and stay that way). We dimensioned twice, first to get close and then to get on the money. Note that we stickered for a week in-between (Just enough time to get the shirt washed).
There is also discussion regarding dimensional control and planning out the dovetail spacing. Note that we want to hide the dado for the drawer bottom in the sides. Dovetail spacing is critical for that.
We assemble the drawers and install the bottom supports. That is unique in this drawer build. The support system that I used really did a good job. The quarter inch plywood is good for about an 18” drawer - no more. With 36 inch drawer widths, we needed reinforcement. This was an elegant solution to this problem.
The finish will be done in another video. I have 54 Drawers and associated carcasses that will be finished all at the same time. You’ll get your fill of that, including installation.

I thought of a pirate for the “Half-Blind” during the intro shot. I have thought about pitching the Saw Stop break engagement but we will let them comment on the second video - that is only fair. I also didn’t have a picture so I just pasted a patch over my eye - it should still be catchy. Please note that I am not making fun of Half Blind people. That should be obvious but in today’s totally messed up world, I am sure I’ll offend someone.
